Hong Kong Gov’t and Hong Kong Police target the homeless when pro-democrats are silence.

On July 10th, 7 people representing homeless families protested for more assistance from the Hong Kong Gov’t. Instead of having conversation with officials, they were surrounded by 10 police and was warned not to threaten National Security.

The next day, July 11, Deputy Chief of Administration, Warner Check Wing-hing, proposed to empower officers from Food and Environmental Hygene Department to confiscate anything that takes up public spaces including personal belongings from the homeless.

Since National Security Law was established, most pro-democrats politicians were either silenced or arrested. The check and balance within the legislation has been vanished. Therefore, minorities in Hong Kong have has only become more helpless.

Hong Kong government initiates public consultation on proposed legislation under Article 23 of the Basic Law. The consultation covers categories like treason, sedition, espionage, and foreign interference. Three approaches suggested: new national security law, integrating existing crimes, and expanding coverage of current laws. Consultation seeks to enhance legal framework and execution mechanisms for safeguarding national security.

Implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong raises human rights concerns. Freedom of expression, assembly, and association could be restricted. Due process and fair trials may be compromised. Surveillance measures threaten privacy rights. Extradition to mainland China raises fair trial concerns. Balancing national security with human rights is crucial. #HongKong #NationalSecurityLaw #HumanRights
"Renowned economist Stephen Roach's thought-provoking @FT article reveals Hong Kong's disappointing stock market performance since the handover. Roach points to the impact of local politics, including Carrie Lam's initiation of the extradition bill and the subsequent national security law imposed by China. These developments have further eroded Hong Kong's autonomy and contributed to its worsening situation. Without significant measures, the city risks being trapped in a prolonged downturn. #HongKong #StockMarket #China #Autonomy #ExtraditionBill #NationalSecurityLaw"

Hong Kong Journalists Association expresses concerns over the city's national security law, fearing its impact on press freedom. The law's broad definitions of offenses, including state secrets and external interference, pose challenges for journalists. The association urges authorities to provide clearer definitions to protect reporters and ensure their ability to hold authorities accountable. #HongKong #PressFreedom #NationalSecurityLaw #Article23

According to Freedom House's latest report, Hong Kong's freedom score has dropped to 41 out of 100, categorized as "partly free." The city received 0 points in several areas, including political rights, political pluralism, and government operations. The implementation of the National Security Law and changes to the electoral system were cited as significant infringements on the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. Hong Kong's political rights have been heavily curtailed, with the Chief Executive election and Legislative Council composition being controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. In contrast, Japan and Taiwan scored the highest in Asia, while mainland China received a mere 9 points. #FreedomReport #VanishingHongKong #NationalSecurityLaw #DisappearingDemocracy

Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital and Apple Daily, along with three related companies, faces charges of conspiring with foreign forces. During the 54th day of trial, witness Li Yuxuan reveals communication with UK Conservative Party member Peillun De before the National Security Law came into effect. Discussions revolve around utilizing Hong Kong to "topple the CCP," and Li acknowledges Hong Kong's willingness to play that role. He clarifies that "toppling" refers to causing chaos and confirms his willingness to bear the consequences. Li also emphasizes that their primary goal is to establish Hong Kong, with "toppling the CCP" being secondary or merely a means to "liberate Hong Kong." The trial adjourns until April 8.

The recent arrests under Hong Kong's national security law serve as a reminder that no one is safe from the reach of Article 23. The apprehensions, including prominent activist Chow Hang-tung, instill fear and raise concerns about freedom of expression and the rule of law. The use of the law to target individuals and suppress dissent has a chilling effect on society. It underscores the need for continued vigilance in protecting fundamental rights and preserving the autonomy of Hong Kong. #Article23 #NationalSecurityLaw #HongKong #FreedomOfExpression #RuleOfLaw

June 7: Hong Kong's judiciary website announced the resignations of non-permanent judges, Lord Lawrence Collins and Lord Jonathan Sumption, from the UK. This reduction in overseas non-permanent judges, from 10 to 8, raises concerns about the rule of law and judicial independence. Lord Collins cited the "political situation in Hong Kong" as the reason for his resignation, while Lord Sumption chose to remain despite being urged to resign. Their departures add to existing doubts about the judiciary's autonomy since the enactment of the National Security Law and discussions on Article 23. #HongKongJudiciary #Resignation #PoliticalSituation #NationalSecurityLaw #Independence #LordCollins #LordSumption

// 香港終審法院前非常任法官岑耀信(Jonathan Sumption)上周撰文評論香港法治垂危,隨即惹來特區政府與中方駐港機構連日發文攻擊。 曾任終院非常任法官長達18年的梅師賢(Anthony Mason)是澳洲高院前首席大法官,一直很支持香港終院保留海外法官的制度。他接受《明報》訪問時表示,強烈不接納中方對岑耀信人格作出的批評,形容岑耀信是高度受人尊重的法官。對於岑耀信評論「港區國安法」衝擊香港法治,梅師賢認為即使法官不同意條文內容,包括認為嚴苛或侵犯人權,但只要法例是有效,法官也只能依法判案。//…
Former Australian Chief Justice Anthony Mason, who supports the retention of overseas judges in Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal, strongly rejects the attacks on former UK Supreme Court judge Jonathan Sumption's character by the Hong Kong government and Chinese authorities. Mason describes Sumption as a highly respected judge. Regarding Sumption's comments on the impact of the national security law on Hong Kong's rule of law, Mason believes that even if judges disagree with the law's provisions, including finding them harsh or violating human rights, they must still apply the law if it is valid. #JudicialIndependence #JonathanSumption #AnthonyMason #OverseasJudges #RuleOfLaw #HongKong #NationalSecurityLaw
Hirano Uryu's denial of entry into Hong Kong further highlights the significant deterioration of freedom in the city. The restrictions on individuals expressing their views and commemorating events like the tragic incident involving Leung Kin-fai demonstrate the shrinking space for dissent and the erosion of fundamental rights. The situation underscores the concerns raised by many regarding the diminishing freedoms and the impact of national security legislation in Hong Kong. #FreedomOfExpression #DeterioratingFreedom #HongKong #NationalSecurityLaw
