Around the world, girls and women have similar dreamsβto make friends, get the best education, be selected for a satisfying job, raise children in a safe place where they can bloom. In Gaza, many of those dreams go unfulfilled due simply to where they are born. But they remain resilient nonetheless. "When we write about martyrs, we must remember that the occupation killed them. We must not leave the deed to the unknown."
Today, the occupation killed the martyr Dr. Refaat Al-Areer, one of the most prominent English professors in the Gaza Strip and the founder of We Are Not Numbers. Refaat, a writer and activist, empowered Palestinians to write their own stories, to take back the narrative, and to be heard by the world. He was a leading expert in Palestinian history and the zionist occupation, amplifying his principled anti-zionist stance to the world.
His final tweet was: "The Democratic Part and Biden are responsible for the Gaza genocide perpetrated by Israel."
"If I must die,
you must live
to tell my story."

We are devastated by Israel's murder of our dear colleague, friend and mentor Dr. Refaat Alareer in Gaza City on 6 December 2023. Throughout this genocide, Refaat never stopped writing, supporting his students and bringing Gaza's voice to the world. We will make sure it continues to be heard.
This is an excerpt from the EI livestream on 20 November 2023, during which executive director Ali Abunimah, writer and scholar Yousef M. Aljamal and Palestinian novelist Ahmed Masoud talk about the incalculable impact Alareer has had on his students in Gaza.
