🇵🇸 Brother of Intifada icon Muhammed al-Durrah killed by Israeli strike | L'Orient Le Jour –

Local Palestinian media reported that Ahmad al-Durrah was killed Thursday by Israeli forces in #BureijRefugeeCamp in #Gaza, 23 years after his brother Mohammed was killed by Israeli soldiers in the lap of his father, Jamal. Mohammed's death was filmed and broadcast on France 2, a public national television channel, narrated by the station's bureau chief.

Mohammed al-Durrah was 12 when he was killed, crouched behind his father as bullets rained down around them, and the images and footage of them spread throughout the world, turning him into a symbol of the Second #Intifada (2000-2005) during which more than 3,000 Palestinians were killed across the occupied #WestBank and Gaza Strip.

In October, 2023, Israeli forces also killed two of Jamal al-Durrah’s brothers, a sister-in-law and a niece.

🇵🇸 Palestinians struggle to rebuild their lives after settler pogroms

A surge in #SettlerViolence since Oct. 7 has robbed multiple Palestinian communities of their land and livelihoods. Now they don't know where to go.

On the day of the expulsion, the settlers refused to allow them to take anything from the burning village: her husband’s ID card, vehicles, mattresses, cell phones, bags of olives, keys — “and my clothes,” one of her sons adds. Everything was left behind, and much of it stolen. Abiyat’s eldest son, who is 11 years old, can no longer go to his school near the village, as there is nobody who can drive him there

In the days leading up to her family’s decision to flee the village, Abiyat would sleep outside with her children, fearing that settlers would set their house on fire while they slept, as had happened to one of her neighbors. “At night, we’d lock the house, turn off the lights, and then go down to the olive trees to sleep under the sky,” she says

🇵🇸 The Wailing Wall of Palestine: Black September | 2020

This was the time when the Marxist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (#PFLP) came into being and would later on achieve a cult status within the Third World and a terrorist one without for their spectacular plane hijackings across the world. This was also the period when Israeli Prime Minister #GoldaMeir had infamously said, “There is no such thing as a Palestinian people.” So for the Palestinians the challenge was dual: to prove their identity as well as their independence.

Israel’s capture of the #WestBank in the 1967 war meant that Palestinians swelled into tiny #Jordan altering the demographic balance; which in turn meant that the only way King Hussein could remain the head of an artificially-carved country was to rely on #imperialism and Israeli #colonialism this hitherto has been the fate of the two other artificially created Arab states in the region, Kuwait and to a greater extent #Lebanon

🇵🇸 Devastation Into Dollars: Israeli Startups Are Making a Killing in Gaza

Despite calls across college campuses demanding divestment from Israel, one sector of the Israeli economy appears to be booming. Israeli startups raised over $1 billion in funding for the second straight month in May.

A number of these successful startups have participated in Israel’s ongoing war on the besieged Gaza Strip, suggesting genocide is a lucrative marketing tool for #business. Products like suicide #drones, smart guns, and robot dogs have all been deployed on the battlefield since October 2023, with some startups even exploiting the war to their advantage and touting their #technologies’ use in the war as an advertising boost

Israel’s government-owned and private companies alike have long promoted their weapons as “battle-tested,” with the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank serving as Israel’s homegrown weapons-testing laboratory.

🇵🇸The livestream was critical evidence’: Tracing attacks on Gaza’s press buildings | +972 Magazine –

According to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists, 103 journalists and #media workers are among the more than 37,000 Palestinian casualties of Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip since October 7.

Faced with the deadliest war for journalists in modern history, Forbidden Stories set out to investigate the targeting of the press in #Gaza and the #WestBank

The consortium analyzed nearly 100 cases of #journalists and media workers killed in Gaza, as well as other cases in which Israel has allegedly targeted, threatened, or wounded members of the press over the past eight months. Unable to report freely from inside the Strip, consortium members remotely contacted over 120 journalists and witnesses to military activities in Gaza and the West Bank; consulted around 25 ballistics, weapons, and audio experts, including Earshot; and used #satellite images.

🇵🇸 israel approves largest West Bank land grab in three decades

Israeli authorities last month approved the largest seizure of land in the occupied West Bank in over three decades, anti-settlement watchdog Peace Now revealed on 3 July.

The activists said the approval allows for the appropriation of 12.7 square kilometers of land in the Jordan Valley, northeast of the West Bank city of Ramallah. By illegally authorizing their seizure, Tel Aviv is allowing the land to be leased to Israelis and banning private Palestinian ownership.

According to Peace Now, this marks the largest single appropriation approved since the 1993 Oslo Accords. The move comes after the seizure of 8 square kilometers of land in the West Bank in March and 2.6 square kilometers in February.

“2024 marks the peak in the extent of declarations of state land,” Peace Now said in a statement.

🇵🇸 Why the West Bank is on the verge of economic collapse | Mondoweiss

The West Bank’s economic crisis and the expansion of Israel’s settlements are connected. Here’s how.

Yet even the partial loosening of restrictions on withheld customs money to the PA doesn’t come close to solving the PA’s economic crisis. Israel’s economic sanctions have forced hundreds of thousands of Palestinian public sector employees to survive on little to no salaries for months on end, while Israel still maintains its revocation of work permits for the some 100,000 Palestinian laborers who used to work in Israel and in Israeli settlements before October 7.

According to Abudaka, “PA salaries account for around 30% of the West Bank’s total salaries, while workers in Israel generate around 40% of the West Bank’s total salaries, making these two sectors the backbone of the West Bank’s economy.”

🇵🇸 “It is very hard to lose five children and have nothing left. You can’t imagine the pain of losing your sons.”

Peter Oborne goes inside the #NurShams #RefugeeCamp in the occupied #WestBank, where Israeli air strikes, #bulldozers and #snipers are reducing it to rubble and ruin.

Residents of the camp say that recent attacks by Israeli forces have taken on a terrifying dimension not seen before, one that amounts to a form of collective punishment, in which civilians and infrastructure have been targeted indiscriminately without red lines or limitations.

In April, at least 14 Palestinians were killed and scores more injured as Israeli forces laid siege to the camp for more than two days, leaving bodies in the streets and ambulances and medical teams unable to reach the wounded.

At least 80 residents of the camp have been killed since 7 October, according to the local popular committee. About 300 homes have been destroyed and at least 2,600 have been damaged. The camp has been raided 28 times.

82. ICJ says Israel’s occupation is illegal
Mondoweiss
🇵🇸 On July 19, the International Court of Justice, or #ICJ, ruled that Israel’s occupation of #Gaza, the #WestBank, and East #Jerusalem (#OPT) is illegal and must end immediately.

Palestinians, of course, have been saying this for years. The court stated that Israel must halt all new settlement construction, evacuate #settlers, and pay reparations to Palestinians, calling some of Israel’s policies “#Apartheid.”

The ruling emphasizes the #occupation’s illegality and highlights the need for international #accountability and policy shifts. This historic ruling, though non-binding, challenges Israel’s legal defenses for the first time.

With #CraigMokhiber, an international human rights lawyer and activist, and a former senior United Nations human rights official. Craig served at the U.N. for over three decades. In October 2023, he left the U.N, criticizing the organization’s human rights failures regarding Israel’s actions to Gaza, warning of #genocide in Gaza.
