Al-Haq الحق Sends Urgent Appeal to UN Special Procedures on Jenin, Following Preliminary Findings of First Field Investigation

On 6 July, Al-Haq sent a legal submission with the first findings of its preliminary field investigation to UN special procedures. On 3 July 2023, Israel launched a unilateral military attack by air and with ground forces in the densely populated Jenin Refugee Camp, in the occupied Palestinian territory (i.e., the West Bank, including eastern Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip). By 8:00 pm on 4 July 2023, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported the death toll at 12 killed, including at least two children. At 1:00 pm on 4 July 2023, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported 120 injuries in Jenin City and Refugee Camp, with 20 in critical condition. Dispelling the myths about Palestinian refugees — in Jenin and beyond – 972mag - July 2023

The Israeli army’s latest invasion and bombardment of Jenin refugee camp was accompanied by typical hasbara — Israeli propaganda — seeking to justify the illegal occupation as a necessary response to terrorism. It has also sparked another round of bad-faith arguments about the Jenin camp’s very existence, with a spike in social media rhetoric asking why there are refugee camps in the occupied West Bank.

The undermining of Palestinians’ refugee status and rights goes hand-in-hand with the denial of the Nakba (“catastrophe”), the uprooting and expulsion of around three-quarters of the Palestinian population in 1948, at the hands of Zionist militias and the new Israeli state.

Denying the Nakba makes it possible to depict Israel’s establishment as liberatory and benign, while propagating myths about Palestinian refugees enables Israeli settler colonialism to continue today.

🇵🇸 Jenin Jenin | 2002

Directed and co-produced by Palestinian actor and director Mohamed Bakri

The story began in April 2002, when the Israeli #Occupation Forces invaded the Palestinian #refugee camp in Jenin, leveled it to the ground, killed more than seventy people and buried civilians alive in their demolished homes and smoldering buildings.

During #OperationDefensiveShield, the "#IOF" refused to allow journalists, human rights and humanitarian organizations into the camp. Jenin remained sealed for days after the invasion.

Bakri was among the first to enter the camp after the massacre and collect oral testimonies from local residents in Jenin. His Jenin Jenin came to narrate the story of the ruined camp and the #massacre's survivors.

On 23 June 2002, the film's Executive Producer, Iyad Samoudi, was killed in #Alyamoun at the end of the filming by Israeli soldiers. Bakri continues to receive death threats. The war on #Jenin continues to this very day."

🇵🇸 Meet Najwa, not ‘Khamas’ | Palestine Diary

Najwa is a young sweet girl and a Palestinian freedom fighter from Jenin. Her resilience, spirit of resistance, and her awareness of the Palestinian struggle, are unmatched outside Palestine, but there are many Najaws inside occupied Palestine. And that's why Palestine will be free from the River to the Sea.

Jenin Jenin, directed and co-produced by Palestinian actor and director Mohamed Bakri, includes testimony from Jenin residents after the Israeli army's "Defensive Wall" operation, during which the city and camp were the scenes of fierce fighting. The operation ended with Jenin flattened and scores of Palestinians dead. Palestinians as well as numerous human rights groups accused Israel of committing war crimes in the April 2002 attack on the refugee camp. Jenin Jenin shows the extent to which the prolonged oppression and terror has affected the state of mind of the Palestinian inhabitants of #Jenin.

🇵🇸 Removing symbols of resilience: Israel demolishes Palestinian monuments in Jenin.

Israel has destroyed dozens of statues and monuments, which were built to honour Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.
The most famous was the sculpture of a horse in Jenin, in the Occupied West Bank.
Residents say the structure symbolised the endurance of the Palestinian people.

Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim reports from Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank

The Jenin Horse, also known by its Arabic name Al-Hissan (The Horse), was a sculpture built in 2003 by the population of Jenin, in the West Bank, along with German artist Thomas Kilpper, made with scrap metal and pieces of wrecked cars that had been destroyed during an Israeli invasion of the city.Among the components of the horse was a large panel from an ambulance.

🇵🇸 Jenin refugee camp becomes a scene of desolation

An Israeli army raid in the Jenin refugee camp, occupied West Bank, that went on for 60 hours left a scene of desolation, Al Jazeera’s Hoda-Abdel Hamid says.

“This is a desolate city, everything is shut down,” Abdel-Hamid said, reporting at the entrance of the refugee camp where Israeli soldiers were stationed.

Walls of shops at the site show drawings of the Star of David and other Israeli symbols, while sewage water fills the streets as the camp’s infrastructures were destroyed.

“Bulldozers were the first to go in and destroyed everything on their way to make people’s life here more difficult,” she said.

At least 12 people were killed and more than 500 arrested in the raid. Many of those detained were later released, Abdel-Hamid said, adding that some of those were badly beaten during questioning.

🇵🇸 A video captures a harrowing scene in Jenin, occupied Palestine, where a Palestinian family – a mother and her two daughters – are seen with their hands raised, being cautiously followed by an Israeli truck.

The family appears terrified, forced to keep their hands visible to avoid being shot.

This Is Palestine: Inside Israel’s Torture Camp | www.imeu.org

In this episode, host #DianaButtu shares the horrifying details about one of Israel's secret #torture camps or Israeli prisons, #SdeTeiman, through the words of a Palestinian journalist from #Gaza, Muhammad Arab.

Muhammad's story is conveyed to Buttu through his lawyer, Khaled Mahajneh. #Mahajneh is a Palestinian lawyer who has spent most of his legal career representing Palestinians who have been tried before Israeli military courts. Most famously, he is the lawyer who represented the 6 Palestinians, who escaped #Gilboa #prison near #Jenin, after they were picked up 5 days after their prison break.

Mahajneh is the first and only attorney to visit the Israel Sde Teiman torture camp. Currently, there are over 20,000 Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza who are being held captive in Israeli prisons, some as young as 10 years old.
