Today, the occupation killed the martyr Dr. Refaat Al-Areer, one of the most prominent English professors in the Gaza Strip and the founder of We Are Not Numbers. Refaat, a writer and activist, empowered Palestinians to write their own stories, to take back the narrative, and to be heard by the world. He was a leading expert in Palestinian history and the zionist occupation, amplifying his principled anti-zionist stance to the world.
His final tweet was: "The Democratic Part and Biden are responsible for the Gaza genocide perpetrated by Israel."

We are devastated by Israel's murder of our dear colleague, friend and mentor Dr. Refaat Alareer in Gaza City on 6 December 2023. Throughout this genocide, Refaat never stopped writing, supporting his students and bringing Gaza's voice to the world. We will make sure it continues to be heard.
This is an excerpt from the EI livestream on 20 November 2023, during which executive director Ali Abunimah, writer and scholar Yousef M. Aljamal and Palestinian novelist Ahmed Masoud talk about the incalculable impact Alareer has had on his students in Gaza.

The Israeli airstrike that killed Prof. Refaat al-Areer was apparently deliberate, Euro-Med Monitor concluded on Friday. The apartment where Refaat and his family were sheltering was surgically bombed out of the entire building where itβs located, according to corroborated eyewitness and family accounts.
This came after weeks of death threats that Refaat received online and by phone from Israeli accounts.
We call for an immediate investigation into this apparently deliberate and targeted killing of a prominent Palestinian academic, writer, poet, and activist.
