🇵🇸 The Oslo Accords: Failure or Betrayal ? | Mondoweiss - October 2023

Palestinians reflect on the past 30 years since the first Oslo Accords were signed and all the ways in which the agreement impacted their lives, pushing them even further away from achieving liberation and statehood.Insightfull on the inner political situation, the lack of democracy ( no elections for over a decade). Many Palestinians don't feel represented by the PA authorities, which they arguably see as a colaborator of the occupying force in the West Bank. The young generation has turned away from the old guard
and joined armed resistance groups.

🇵🇸They tortured us, subjected us to electric shocks. We suffered a lot.”

Some 60 Palestinian men detained by Israeli forces returned to Gaza on Monday, entering the territory through the recently opened Kerem Shalom crossing.

All of the men said they were tortured in an unspecified facility in southern Israel. One of the released detainees said that many of them were employees of the Palestinian Authority.

🇵🇸 Why the West Bank is on the verge of economic collapse | Mondoweiss

The West Bank’s economic crisis and the expansion of Israel’s settlements are connected. Here’s how.

Yet even the partial loosening of restrictions on withheld customs money to the PA doesn’t come close to solving the PA’s economic crisis. Israel’s economic sanctions have forced hundreds of thousands of Palestinian public sector employees to survive on little to no salaries for months on end, while Israel still maintains its revocation of work permits for the some 100,000 Palestinian laborers who used to work in Israel and in Israeli settlements before October 7.

According to Abudaka, “PA salaries account for around 30% of the West Bank’s total salaries, while workers in Israel generate around 40% of the West Bank’s total salaries, making these two sectors the backbone of the West Bank’s economy.”

🇵🇸 “We are now going to enter a long period of concentrated effort in enforcement and #demolitions. We are going to return the situation to the way it was.”

Israel's far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, has launched a campaign to demolish structures and expel Palestinians from ‘Area B’ of the West Bank.

Smotrich, who heads a pro-settler party and is himself a settler, accused the Palestinian Authority of investing significant resources to create territorial contiguity in the region, which he claims threatens Israeli control and causes environmental damage.

Under the 1993 #OsloAccords, it was agreed that the area Smotrich is referring to would be controlled by the Palestinian Authority (#PA).
