πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ Black September

Refers to the conflict that was fought between the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), under the leadership of Yasser Arafat, and the Jordanian Armed Forces, under the leadership of King Hussein primarily between 16 and 27 September 1970, with certain actions continuing until July 1971.

On 1 September 1970, there were several failed attempts to assassinate the king. On 7 September, in the series of Dawson's Field hijackings, three planes were hijacked by the PFLP: SwissAir and TWA jets that were landed in Jordan's Azraq area, and a Pan Am jet that was flown to Cairo. On 9 September, a BOAC flight from Bahrain was hijacked to Zarqa. The PFLP announced that the hijackings were intended "to bring special attention to the Palestinian problem". After all hostages were removed, the planes were dramatically blown up in front of TV cameras. Directly confronting and angering the King, the rebels declared the Irbid area a "liberated region.

The civil war determined if Jordan would be ruled by the Palestine Liberation Organisation or the Hashemite monarchy. The war resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, the vast majority Palestinian. Armed conflict ended with the expulsion of the PLO leadership and thousands of Palestinian fighters to Lebanon.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ Edward Heath was pushed by the US into exchanging the iconic Palestinian freedom fighter Leila Khaled for dozens of western hostages after the world's most spectacular multiple aircraft hijacking in September 1970.

Leila Khaled was at the centre of a crisis sparked by the seizure of five civilian airliners by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The PFLP blew up three of the aircraft for the television cameras at a disused RAF airstrip in the Jordanian desert, and 56 US and European passengers were used to bargain for the release of seven Palestinian prisoners in Britain, Germany and Switzerland.

One was Leila Khaled, who had been handed over to the British authorities at Heathrow after an attempt to commandeer an El Al flight was foiled and her fellow hijacker, Patrick Arguello, a Nicaraguan, was shot dead by Israeli guards.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ Black September Organisation - 2/2

The BSO engaged in several plots to avenge Palestinian losses in Jordan and weaken Israel. These included kidnappings, the assassination of Jordanian Prime Minister Wasif al-Tel in Cairo on 28 November 1971 and, most notoriously, the murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 #MunichOlympics. Other attacks included the #hijacking of several commercial flights, the mailing of hundreds of letter bombs and the assassination of prominent figures such as a #Mossad agent and Saudi Embassy diplomats in Khartoum (Sudan). In total, BSO claimed or was attributed to at least 120 attacks.

Israel, in turn, unleashed its own Black September operation when Israeli Prime Minister #GoldaMeir ordered the creation of a hit squad that deployed throughout #Europe and the Middle East. This group assassinated numerous Palestinian and Arab agents, including those suspected of links to Black September.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ Remembering Theresa Halasa: Revered Veteran of the Palestinian Resistance

As an 18-year-old Palestinian fighter in 1972, Theresa was one of four militants who hijacked a Belgian Sabena plane, Flight 571, en route to Tel Aviv. Their demand: freedom for 315 Palestinian and Arab prisoners in Israeli jails.

The four Palestinian fighters, #ThereseHalasa, #RimaTannous *(a young Jordanian woman*), Ali Taha Abu Sneineh and Abdel-Aziz al-Atrash, and the plane were attacked by Israeli forces after landing in Palestine, disguised as Red Cross workers and aircraft technicians. The forces that attacked the plane and killed Abu Sneineh and al-Atrash – as well as a 22-year-old passenger, Miriam Anderson – included Ehud Barak and Benjamin Netanyahu; Netanyahu himself was shot in the shoulder, and Therese Halasa was severely injured.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Έ 14/8/1972 SABENA HIJACK TRIAL

Rima Tannous and Therese Halasa were brought before an Israeli military court and sentenced to life imprisonment, but they continued to educate themselves and struggle behind prison bars. Rima Tannous told her story of torture under Israeli interrogation in an account published after her release from Israeli prisons in 1979 in a prisoner exchange; Therese Halasa was released four years later in 1983 in another prisoner exchange with the Palestinian resistance. At the time of her release, she was engaged with other prisoners in a collective hunger strike.
