#Ethiopia: Ex-Ethiopian peacekeepers of Tigrayan descent previously stationed in #Abyei region face danger amid #Sudan's escalating conflict

Former Ethiopian peacekeepers of Tigrayan origin, previously stationed in Abyei, are now facing increased security concerns amid Sudan’s escalating conflict. Having sought asylum in Sudan two years ago during the #Tigray war, these ex-peacekeepers are now at greater risk due to intensified clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (#SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (#RSF).

A former peacekeeper shared with Addis Standard the mounting tensions among their ranks, particularly after the RSF's recent claims of "#TPLF forces" involvement in the Sudan conflict. In 2022, 528 Ethiopian troops from Tigray, part of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (#UNISFA), sought asylum in Sudan during the peak of the Tigray war. Of these asylum seekers, 248 have received official recognition, with 170 currently residing in Um Gargour camp.

The former peacekeeper highlighted their vulnerability due to the lack of security guarantees amidst escalating conflicts. They have repeatedly urged the #UNHCR to facilitate their transfer to a more secure location and addressed urgent humanitarian issues like medical supply shortages.

#South_Sudan excludes #Abyei from electoral process

South Sudan has excluded Abyei from the electoral process due to its disputed status and ongoing security concerns. Abyei's status has been unresolved since the 2005 comprehensive peace agreement, leading to tensions between the Ngok Dinka and rival Arab communities over territorial ownership.

In 2013, the Ngok Dinka held a unilateral referendum favoring a return to Bahr El Ghazal, but neither Sudan nor South Sudan accepted the outcome. On June 19, 2024, the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Abednego Akok, appointed chairpersons for high election committees in the 10 states but excluded Abyei, Ruweng, and Greater Pibor. Akok mentioned Abyei would participate in December polls as part of Gogrial in Warrap, without specifying how this would work amid insecurity.

The NEC's appointments included Alphayo Philip Lako for Central Equatoria and other leaders for various states. The South Sudan Elections law mandates the NEC to appoint high committee members to oversee state-level elections and referendums. Each committee includes five members, with a six-year renewable tenure.
