#Ethiopian Electric Utility blames theft for widespread power outages

Shiferaw Telila, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Utility (#EEU), recently addressed the issue of frequent power disruptions plaguing the country, particularly in the capital city of #Addis_Abeba. In an interview with state media, Shiferaw attributed these outages primarily to the theft of electrical infrastructure.

Local media reports indicate that residents of Addis Abeba are growing increasingly frustrated with persistent, prolonged, and unscheduled electricity interruptions.

According to EEU, the theft of electricity infrastructure has resulted in substantial financial losses. For the 2023/24 fiscal year alone, the utility company estimates losses exceeding 64 million Birr due to these criminal activities.

The thefts are not limited to the capital. EEU reports that the #Amhara, #Oromia, Southwest Ethiopia, and #Tigray regions have also been significantly affected.

#Ethiopia: ‘Waiting for death’: desperate plight of #Tigray’s war displaced

The aftermath of the Tigray war continues to affect over a million people who remain displaced from their homes, nearly two years after a peace deal was signed. In #Mekele, the capital of Ethiopia's Tigray region, many internally displaced persons (#IDPs) are living in crowded, makeshift shelters.

Wolde Meressa, 78, resides in a school classroom with 30 others. "By staying here, we are merely waiting for death," he said, describing the cramped conditions. Wolde is one of approximately 1.1 million people unable to return home, according to the UN's humanitarian response agency, OCHA.

Aid organizations are scaling back operations, making essential supplies harder to obtain. Tibe Addise, 42, living in an IOM-run camp in #Shire, stated, "Since arriving, I have struggled to care for my children, suffering cold and hunger daily."

Many IDPs were forced from Western Tigray, an area that remains largely inaccessible to humanitarian agencies. Surafel Asmelash, coordinator at the Seba Care IDP camp in Mekele, noted, "According to the peace agreement, we were told that peace had been restored and we would be able to return to our homes. However, we have neither returned nor have the aid agencies been given the opportunity to stay. The people have been left in limbo."

#Ethiopia: Federal gov’t says #TPLF registration issue resolved, regional authorities ban demonstrations as intraparty tensions rise

The Federal Government Communication Services reiterated its stance on the legal status of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), stating that the issue has been appropriately addressed by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (#NEBE). The NEBE granted TPLF a certificate of legal personality as a new political party, rejecting its request to reinstate its pre-war legal status.

In response, TPLF rejected NEBE’s decision, arguing it contradicts the Pretoria Peace Agreement. Amid rising intraparty tensions, #Tigray regional authorities announced a temporary ban on demonstrations, citing concerns over potential security threats.

In this op-ed, Weldeslassie Hailai Abera, an independent researcher affiliated with the University of Kwazulu-Natal, analyzes the internal divisions within the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) after the Tigray War, highlighting challenges related to factionalism and legitimacy.

The article identifies two main factions within the TPLF: one led by Debretsion Gebremichael, characterized by a cautious approach to implementing the Pretoria Agreement, and another led by Getachew Reda, which is described as more inclined toward compromise and prioritizing peace.

The op-ed also addresses concerns about the TPLF’s legitimacy among the Tigrayan population. It notes a decline in trust, with some questioning the party’s role during the war.

#Op_ed: Strategic Sanctions: A Necessary Evil for Peacemaking in #Ethiopia

In this op-ed, Alula Nerea, a doctoral candidate in Economics and International Business at Bucharest University of Economic Studies, examines the potential role of targeted sanctions in Ethiopia's political landscape.

The article discusses ongoing conflicts in Ethiopia, evaluates current dialogue initiatives, and proposes that strategically applied sanctions could encourage more substantive political negotiations. #Ethiopia: #Tigray opposition call for ‘Inclusive’ regional gov’t amidst #TPLF congress, internal power struggle

Three major opposition parties in Ethiopia's Tigray region have called for the formation of an inclusive regional government as the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) holds its 14th Congress amidst internal power struggles.

Salsay Weyane Tigray, Tigray Independence Party, and National Congress of Great Tigray (Baytona) made this proposal on 16 August in #Mekelle. They criticized the TPLF, stating that it is "clearly in a state of decay" and has "revealed its true nature through this crisis." They accused the TPLF of making "a suicidal move to maintain its grip on power through force."

#Ethiopia: #TPLF re-elects Debretsion as Chairman, suspends #Tigray Interim Admin President, others from party membership

The Congress, which faced a boycott by key executive members, also saw significant leadership changes within the party.

In a notable move that laid bare the growing schism within the party, the Congress replaced Getachew Reda, the deputy chairman of the party, with Amanuel Assefa, the former head of the Tigray region’s justice bureau and former chief of the Interim Administration President’s office.

It remains unclear whether and/or how the suspension of Getachew from the party affects his position as the president of the interim admin of the region.
Over the weekend, a separate conference was convened by Getachew and several other key members of the party who boycotted the Congress under the theme “Salvation of the People and the Party”. The conference already declared the outcomes of the 14th Congress of the TPLF to be “null and void.”
