*There are more ways to fail UPSC CSE Exam than to pass it.*

Some personal observations after failing 2 Prelims and 4 Mains [and interviewing multiple times]:

- Reading random notes rather than making own notes from standard sources, in a planned manner is bad.

>>> Make notes like you have to give many attempts but study with a mindset that this is the last attempt.

- Forgetting that without strong foundation of understanding a subject/concept/topic, factual knowledge will just evaporate.

>>> First understand then memorize.

- Running behind every current affairs topic without studying the underlying static syllabus and concepts is waste of time and energy.

>>>Keep in touch with current affairs but study the static part of the syllabus holistically.

- Overconfidence due to educational background and smartness might just hold one back in this exam, because one is tempted to achieve quick results and overnight success. Demotivation follows when one experiences the failure.

>>> Understand that this exam is about consistent work. And more often than not, it is a long, tiring, and challenging process. It will need sacrifices one does not yet know about!

- Bad company and bad personal routines are big roadblocks towards success. While good daily routine, taking care of your physical and psychological well-being will help you in long run.

>>> Good sleeping patterns, good diet, supportive and motivated friends will help in the preparation phase and beyond. If you cannot find good company, go solo.

- Blindly following 'toppers' may just derail one's own planning and strategy. It may confuse and demotivate.

>>>Listen to everyone but adopt only what suits your needs. Each one of us is unique.

- Practicing critical thinking and constructive criticism will help your personal growth and mains answer writing. Learning to respond with knowledge and understanding is very important for a public servant.

>>>Learn to control the reactionary behavior.

- Announcing to the whole society that you are preparing for UPSC Exam will only create additional burdens and challenges.

>>>Prepare silently and diligently, keeping only a few well-wishers informed.

>>>And lastly when one needs help of any kind, it is important to reach out to other people- family/friends/mentors.
