One of the best attraction in Addis that tells Ethiopian history.
Since the new, young and dynamic Prime Minister assumed office less than two years ago, not only the country started changing for the better but also the palace which was off limit for the public is now open to all visitors and it is really amazing.
The current Prime Minister has such an amazing vision and accomplishing and opening this park in short period is really outstanding. During the previous autocratic regimes, the palace was also used to jail and torture opposition individuals and visiting the jail that was used to silence opposition members makes you feel sad. The names and photos of those who were jailed, tortured, died and perished in the palace are displayed. The entrance fee is about $7 and $33 for VIP treatment. The tour takes about 2 hours and for VIP about 3 hours.
The tour includes seeing black lions, indigenous various plants, sculptures for various Ethiopian ethnic groups, history of previous emperors and leaders, 100 years old Emperor Menilik hall, Emperor Haile Selasie’s hall, underground jail used by some leaders and names, pictures, videos and history of those prisoners perished in that jail. Moreover, various items used by the emperors such as crowns, cloths, cars, and eating, cooking and drinking items are displayed. Another hall also displays the major religions of Ethiopia along with each history.
During the tour if you need to drink and eat, the park has restaurants, cafes, ice cream shop and pastries. An ambulance with medical staffs is ready to assist any guest who might have felt sick. In general, Unity Park is a must see attraction place if you happen to be in Addis Ababa. The park basically tell you the history of Ethiopia in short and simple way.
