🔥 A new drone LiDAR mapping project has been accomplished by Niall Gates from Ireland 🇮🇪
❓ Project Challenges presented: the highly vegetated area meaning that a DEM and contours created with photogrammetry wouldn't be accurate in these areas. A LiDAR survey could solve this but this brought its own challenge related to the topography of the quarried area. Standard terrain following (SRTM) with UgCS wouldn't be so accurate because the quarrying would've changed the topography of the land over time significantly.
❗️ Solution to perform survey job: photogrammetry mission flown and orthomosaic created while a basic DEM was also created (which was cleaned up a bit in highly vegetated areas). This basic DEM was imported to UgCS and flown according to with TOPODRONE LiDAR HI-RES on board of DJI M600 drone to create the final deliverables - highly accurate DEM and contours. The client will be using the final deliverables of the orthomosaic and the LiDAR DEM/contours as part of planning applications to develop their lands further.

❗️ We are pleased to share impressive photos and LIDAR data samples captured by FIXAR 007 VTOL with TOPODRONE LIDAR AVIA on board.
🔥 Totally 2 sq. km of mountainous terrain area covered by dense vegetation were surveyed in just one flight!
🍁 As one of the pilots said, the area looked like a carpet of leaves from the sky. However, the density of the point cloud made it easy to perform automatic classification of terrain, vegetation, buildings and structures, power transmission poles and wires, which is not feasible with traditional photogrammetry methods.
⏳ It is even difficult to imagine how many hours and days it would require to survey this area with standard instrumental methods (total stations and RTK receivers).
💪 We would like to make special reference to the high performance of the VTOL LIDAR system in hard-to-access terrain where access to the site makes it practically impossible to perform power lines monitoring and surveying from the ground.

1️⃣ Install LIDAR HI-RES, ULTRA or HDL on a car with using TOPODRONE mobile kit;
2️⃣ Drive a car with constant speed up to 30 km/h;
3️⃣ If you survey in forest areas don’t move slowly, 30 km/h speed ensures better post processing results even with a low quality of GNSS signal thanks to high precision IMU inside of TOPODRONE LiDAR system;
4️⃣ It is possible to use single route but survey in both directions of the road helps you to deliver better quality of point cloud in terms of accuracy and details;
5️⃣ Use an automatic Strip Alignment function in TOPODRONE Post Processing software to define Bore Sights calibration angles, it is not necessary to apply this function for the whole survey trip, just select a part of trajectory and after that use calibrated IMU angles to generate a point cloud for all trip.

🇺🇸 Just a few days after the Geo Week 2023 show, we have already conducted training for our AQUAMAPPER bathymetric sensor. We did a survey for a large mining company in Salt Lake City.
🚤 It was great to see how the TOPODRONE AQUAMAPPER could be used by the surveyors to monitor the constantly changing depth in the reservoirs and to see the great efficiency and flexibility that the TOPODRONE equipment can provide compared to UAV boats.
🤝 We had a great time at SLC! Thanks to the SLC guys for their great drone pilot skills and their openness to new technology.
