The collected data could be combined with LiDAR data to deliver a full digital twin of a studied area.
๐ AQUAMAPPER is a brand-new hardware developed in-house by TOPODRONE and contributes to a complete set of photogrammetry, LiDAR and bathymetry surveying solutions. This new product mounted on a UAV provides a combination of high-speed efficiency (up to 14 km/h) and accuracy, successfully challenging conventional methods such as boats. It is a PPK ready solution, compatible with DJI Matrice 300 RTK. ๐ Last week FIXAR team from Riga (Latvia) come to our office in Montreux, Switzerland and brought two black carrying cases with FIXAR 007 drones inside.
๐ค To tell the truth we werenโt expecting something incredible in terms of performance from this solution.
๐ณ FIXAR 007 doesnโt look like a common drone. It is bigger than any consumer UAV and at the same time it is smaller than any VTOL which can carry LiDAR systems. It has 4 motors as only control units (no servos) and 2 wings (wingspan just a little under 1.6m) with a large tail.
๐ Within the shortest time FIXAR crew arranged to integrate TOPODRONE LiDAR AVIA and ULTRA sensors on board and drive the bird to our test polygon.

๐ฅ A new drone LiDAR mapping project has been accomplished by Niall Gates from Ireland ๐ฎ๐ช
โ Project Challenges presented: the highly vegetated area meaning that a DEM and contours created with photogrammetry wouldn't be accurate in these areas. A LiDAR survey could solve this but this brought its own challenge related to the topography of the quarried area. Standard terrain following (SRTM) with UgCS wouldn't be so accurate because the quarrying would've changed the topography of the land over time significantly.
โ๏ธ Solution to perform survey job: photogrammetry mission flown and orthomosaic created while a basic DEM was also created (which was cleaned up a bit in highly vegetated areas). This basic DEM was imported to UgCS and flown according to with TOPODRONE LiDAR HI-RES on board of DJI M600 drone to create the final deliverables - highly accurate DEM and contours. The client will be using the final deliverables of the orthomosaic and the LiDAR DEM/contours as part of planning applications to develop their lands further.
๐ Niall has been using TOPODRONE equipment since 2020, starting from the affordable and high-precision PPK module for DJI Phantom 4 Pro and now he operates drone based TOPODRONE LiDAR system.

๐ฅ Totally 2 sq. km of mountainous terrain area covered by dense vegetation were surveyed in just one flight!
๐ As one of the pilots said, the area looked like a carpet of leaves from the sky. However, the density of the point cloud made it easy to perform automatic classification of terrain, vegetation, buildings and structures, power transmission poles and wires, which is not feasible with traditional photogrammetry methods.
โณ It is even difficult to imagine how many hours and days it would require to survey this area with standard instrumental methods (total stations and RTK receivers).
