A 5В55 missile of the S-300 system was used in the attack on the Azov base of operations in Kharkov on 1 September.
According to Ukrainian sources, three missiles of the S-300 anti-aircraft system converted for ground attack were used on that day.

In the case of the use of the 5V55R ("5В55Р") of the S-300 system:

The operational-tactical ballistic modification can have a maximum range of 150-170km with an apogee of 50km.
In other posts we have already talked about the fact that to modify these missiles they have to be adapted and fitted with satellite and inertial positioning systems. Taking into account the accuracy of other systems such as the Iskander, the CEP of the converted S300 can be in the order of 10 or 15 metres.

Moreover, in the early versions of the S-300PS SAM system, the "surface-to-surface" mode was implemented, which ensured a low CEP only within the radio horizon (up to 35 km), where the 30N6 illumination radar ensured precise tracking of the SAM on the terminal section of the trajectory and provided radio correction until the target was hit.
Outside the direct radio visibility between the 5V55R missile and the 30N6 battery radar (more than 50 km), the circular deviation increased in direct proportion to the length of the section between the point of loss of radio visibility of the SAM and the target's position. The only exception was the passive radar mode, when the semi-active homing head of the 5V55R missile captured an enemy radar system operating in active mode.

With the advent of GLONASS correction modules and digital INS, the over-the-horizon circular error probable of the strike versions of the 5V55R reached the levels of the Iskander or Tornado-S.

According to Western intelligence, the Russian Strategic Missile Forces are preparing to deploy in the Vologda Region, 00 km from Moscow, a positioning area for the 9M730 Burevestnik strategic missile systems with a nuclear power plant with an unlimited range and an ultra-low-altitude flight profile.

Another productive night for the Russian Missile and Artillery Forces in the Sumy operational direction.

The infrared sensor of the multispectral optical-electronic complex, placed on the S350M "Supercam" UAV, recorded the maneuvers of a M142 HIMARS launcher 500-600 m southeast of the settlement of Khrapovshchina and the N-07 highway.
When the MLRS went deep into the forest and took up position in a camouflaged deployment point, it was struck by an operational-tactical quasi-ballistic missile 9M723-1 of the Iskander-M complex.

Moreover, the shrapnel field covered a field warehouse of transport and launch modules with 227mm M31A1 GMLRS, or (according to the second version) the more scarce M270 MLRS launcher on a tracked chassis.

Combined attack on enemy targets

Today, September 4, 2024, at about 5:30-6:00 a.m, Russian troops carried out a combined attack on enemy targets in Lvov, Krivoy Rog, and the Black Sea coast. Iskander-M ballistic missiles, Kh-101/555 and Kh-22 cruise missiles, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, and Geran-2 loitering munitions were used.
Information about the launches of sea-based Kalibr missiles is not true.

In Lvov, strikes were carried out on the territory of the Danylo Halytsky International Airport. The facility was hit by at least 2x Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and 2x Kh-101/555 cruise missiles.
According to preliminary data, as a result of the strikes, two MiG-29s of the Ukrainian Air Force were destroyed and another Su-24M was damaged . The exact locations of the impacts are unknown. It is worth noting that the passage along the Sknylivsky Bridge, which provides a view of the airport territory, is blocked according to information from local authorities.

Despite the PR inscription "Hypersonic", the aerodynamic layout and visible weight and dimensions of the medium-range ballistic missile captured on the video demonstration from "Ansar Allah" indicate the fact that we have before us a classic 2-stage Intermediate-range ballistic missile with a separable guided warhead equipped with X-shaped all-moving aerodynamic control surfaces, an inertial navigation unit, and a GPS/GLONASS correction unit (the layout is similar to that of the 2-stage 301-mm guided rockets of the A-200 MLRS "Polonez-M").

Also, judging by the insignificant apparent ratio of the mass of the 1st stage to the mass of the warhead (similar to the Zolfaghar operational-tactical ballistic missile), one can come to the conclusion that the range of the missile shown in the video can reach 400-700 km, but not 2000 km. It is likely that the striking elements of a completely different ballistic missile, the layout of which is close to the Sajil, flew along the conveyor belt in Ramle.

As for hypersonic speed, the first stage of this missile can provide acceleration of the warhead to 5.5-6M at the final segment of the active section of the trajectory before reaching apogee at altitudes of more than 150 km.

After separation of the first stage and as the cone-shaped maneuvering warhead descends into the stratosphere (especially below 20 km, where there is an intense increase in pressure and aerodynamic drag), the speed drops sharply from 5,500 to 4.000-3.500 km/h (to the standard supersonic marks), as with the 9M723-1 Iskander-M and Kh-47M2 Kinzhal.

Therefore, purely hypersonic products may include missiles with hypersonic integral rocket-ramjet engines (for example, 3M22 "Zircon", the closed American project X-51, etc.), capable of operating for a long period of time at speeds of 5.5M+ in horizontal flight in the altitude range of 23-37 km.
The presented object does not show these characteristics.

The 4.5-ton warhead is the key difference of the promising North Korean operational-tactical ballistic missile "Hwasong-11DA-4.5", one of the prototypes of which was tested a day earlier in the DPRK.

The most notable detail is the missile's CEP of about 10-15 m, which fully corresponds to the parameters of the 9M723-1 operational-tactical quasi-ballistic missiles of the Iskander-M complexes. This fact indicates that these missiles are equipped with modern digital INS based on single-axis and three-axis semiconductor MEMS accelerometers, as well as GLONASS/GPS/Beidou correction modules with noise-protected upward-oriented antennas.

The second objective control of the defeat of elements of the anti-aircraft missile platoon of the Patriot PAC-2 GEM-T air defense missile system by the 9M723-1 operational-tactical quasi-ballistic missile with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead (with the implementation of air detonation by means of the 9E156 Zont ("9Э156 "Зонт") contactless fuse).

This time, the fragmentation field covered the passive phased array of the AN/MPQ-53/65 multifunctional radar, the AN/MSQ-104 combat control post and one of the M901 launchers deployed in the area of ​​the settlement of Pashena Balka in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

In this case, it is noteworthy that on the segment of the descending branch of the trajectory, lying in the altitude range from 25 to 8 km, when the dive angle of the 9M723-1 was about 75 degrees and was covered by the elevation sector of the AN/MPQ-65 radar pattern, the operators in the "upper beam" mode were able to detect the 9M723-1, tie its route and even carry out a paired launch of MIM-104D anti-aircraft missiles, which, a second after the inclined launch, entered the interception trajectory with an angle of the ascending branches of about 83 degrees (visible by the shadow of the solid propellant rocket motor jet).

However, below 10 km the Iskander-M dive angle approached the steep one (more than 83 degrees) and our IRBM went beyond the AN/MPQ-65 beam elevation angle, which is 83 degrees, and the illumination of the MIM-104D anti-aircraft missiles by the semi-active radar homing head ceased. As a result, the SAM interceptors went "blind", and the 9M723-1 hit the Patriot PAC-2 GEM-T SAM system.

In this case, we once again observed one of the most striking episodes of breaking through the anti-missile barrier of a SAM system by means of an air-space attack vehicle entering a “dead funnel” above the illumination radar.

In the case of the Patriot PAC-3MSE SAM system, where the MIM-104F anti-aircraft missiles are equipped with active radar homing heads capable of capturing targets with a RCS of 0.02 square meters at a distance of 8-10 km, the interception could continue even after the 9M723-1 went beyond the MPQ-65 radar beam elevation angle, and in this case the flight and technical parameters of the missile become of primary importance, and in particular, the ability of the quasi-ballistic missile to perform anti-aircraft maneuvers.

To repel a massive strike by Shahab-3 and Fattah-1 medium-range ballistic missiles, the Pentagon has deployed a battery or regiment of THAAD anti-missile systems equipped with KV exoatmospheric interceptors on Israeli territory, which were able to intercept only a small fraction of the warheads of Iranian IRBMs thanks to a total saturation of more than 200 missiles.

Let us recall that target designation for THAAD interceptors was provided by one of the most advanced (jammable and high-energy) radars in the world, the AN/TPY-2, capable of detecting targets with an RCS of 0.01 sq. m at a distance of up to 870 km.

Apparently, both the target channel and the THAAD anti-missile ammunition supply for the pair of batteries turned out to be completely insufficient.

A more or less objective (unlike the NAFO ones) analysis from German specialists in the field of anti-aircraft missile systems regarding the real effectiveness of the Patriot PAC-2/3 air defense systems transferred to Kiev in both modifications in the SMO zone.

According to their data, the Patriot PAC-2/3 mixed anti-aircraft missile system intercepts around a third of Russian missiles and up to 2/3 of Geranium-type kamikaze UAVs (averaged depending on the terrain and jamming environment).

Also according German statistics we have that German divisional "Patriots" shot down:

- 50% of all Kalibr cruise missiles in the low-altitude viewing sector of the AN/MPQ-53/65 radar.

- 22% of the X-59/69.

- 4% of operational-tactical missiles of the Iskander-M complex.

- 0.6% of the S-300/400 missiles converted to ground attack.

- 0.55% of supersonic missiles X-22.

The report notes that it is possible to shoot down the Kinzhal and Zircon hypersonic missiles only with a massive salvo of the entire ammunition load of the launcher.

In equal proportions (1 MIM-104D/F SAM against a single Kh-47M2 or Kh-32), these missiles are guaranteed to hit their targets.
It is also worth noting that the effectiveness of the highly maneuverable MIM-104F PAC-3MSE interceptor with gas-dynamic belts and active millimeter Ka-range seeker, which is approximately 5-10 times more effective in counteracting maneuvering ballistic targets than the MIM-104D PAC-2 GEM-T.

Israeli Siver Sparrow target missiles, converted into medium-range aeroballistic missiles (about 1.500-1.900 km), launched from the F-15D Baz suspension units from Iraqi airspace, cover almost all of Iran's nuclear facilities with their range.

But what is the reason for Israel's recent request to use the airspace of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar (which was rejected by the leadership of these states) ??

It is quite obvious that the mass (150-250 kg) and kinetic energy of the Silver Sparrow warheads will not be enough to destroy the bunker architecture of Iran's nuclear facilities. This means that it will be necessary to use Spice-500/1000 gliding guided aerial bombs from a distance of up to 50-100 km, or GBU-31(V)4/B aerial bombs. To safely reach the bombing lines (with minimal risk of interception by Iranian long-range Sevom Khordad air defense systems and Su-35S fighters), it is much more logical to use Saudi Arabian airspace. Otherwise, it will be necessary to "infiltrate" the airspace over the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz or the Iraqi city of Basra at low altitudes with the risk of interception by Iranian S-400 and Su-35S air defense systems. The Pentagon is not eager to take part in strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. The IDF General Staff is faced with a difficult task.
