Nathu La Pass - It is located in the state of Sikkim. This famous pass is located in the India- China border and was reopened in 2006.
-It forms a part of an offshoot of the ancient silk route.
-It is one of the border trading posts between India and China.

Shipki La Pass - It is located through Sutlej Gorge. It connects Himachal Pradesh with Tibet. It is India’s third border post for trade with China after Lipu Lekh and Nathula Pass.

Jelep La Pass - This pass passes through the Chumbi valley. It connects Sikkim with Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

Lanak La Pass - This is located in the Aksai Chin in the Ladakh UnionnTerritory and not in Jammu and Kashmir. It connects Ladakh and Lhasa.

Lipu Lekh Pass – It is located in Uttarakhand. It connects Uttarakhand with Tibet. This pass is an important border post for trade with China. The pilgrims for Manasarovar travel through this pass. It was in news due to Nepal redrawing its political map.

Zeroing in on malaria elimination Report:

Released by: World Health Organization (WHO)

Purpose: The report provides the progress made by 21 malaria eliminating countries as part of the “E-2020 Initiative”.

E-2020 Initiative:

● WHO had launched the E-2020 initiative in 2017.The initiative has supported 21 countries in their efforts to get to zero malaria cases within the 2020 timeline.

E-2025 Initiative:

● Building on the successes of the E-2020, WHO has launched the E-2025 initiative.

● As part of this initiative, WHO has identified 25 countries that have the potential to stamp out malaria within a 5-year timeline.

● These countries will receive specialized support and technical guidance from WHO as they work towards the target of zero malaria.

World Malaria Day:
● It is observed on April 25 every year by the WHO.

2021 Theme: “Reaching the Zero Malaria target".

🔺Compulsory Licensing

Compulsory Licensing (CL) allows governments to license third parties (that is, parties other than the patent holders) to produce and market a patented product or process without the consent of patent owners.

Any time after three years from date of sealing of a patent, application for compulsory license can be made, provided:

-Reasonable requirements of public have not been satisfied;
-Patented invention is not available to public at a reasonably affordable price;
-Patented inventions are not carried out in India.

Compulsory Licencing is regulated under the Indian Patent Act, 1970.

🔺Section
3(d) of the Indian Patent Act 1970 (as amended in 2005) does not allow patent to be granted to inventions involving new forms of a known substance unless it differs significantly in properties with regard to efficacy.

This means that the Indian Patent Act does not allow evergreening of patents.

What is Djibouti Code of Conduct/ Jeddah Amendment(DCOC/JA)

● It was established in 2009.It is a grouping on maritime matters aimed at repression of piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Western Indian Ocean Region, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

Members: It comprises 18 member states adjoining the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, the East Coast of Africa and Island countries in the Indian Ocean Region.

What is Fair and Remunerative Price(FRP)?

● The Fair and Remunerative Price(FRP) is the minimum price that sugar mills have to pay to sugarcane farmers.

● FRP is determined by the Central Government on the basis of the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices(CACP).

● The ‘FRP’ of sugarcane is determined under Sugarcane (Control) Order and announced by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs(CCEA).

● The final FRP is arrived at by taking into account various factors such as cost of production, domestic and international prices, overall demand-supply situation, intercrop price parity among others.

🔴National Gene Bank:

-established in 1996.It aims to preserve the seeds of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) for future generations in the form of seeds, genomic resources, pollen etc.

-It is hosted by National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi.

-It can store different crop groups such as cereals, millets, medicinal and aromatic plants and narcotics, etc.

-The NGB has four kinds of facilities, namely, Seed Gene bank (- 18°C), Cryogene bank (-170°C to -196°C), In vitro Gene bank (25°C), and Field Gene bank, to cater to long-term as well as medium-term conservation
