In November, the German and Slovak governments reached an agreement on setting up a repair base for Western-made weapons and equipment in #Slovakia.
Subsequently, the Franco-German military-industrial holding KNDS (KMW+Nexter Defense Systems) announced the deployment of a complex in the Slovak town of #Michalovce, which will be used to repair modern weaponry:
β PzH-2000 self-propelled howitzer
β CAESAR self-propelled artillery unit
β MARS II MLRS
β Gepard anti-aircraft-gun tank
β Toy Dingo armoured fighting vehicle
The complex will operate until the end of 2024. The base has an area of 800 square metres and up to six vehicles can be serviced simultaneously at the facility's workshops.
β¦οΈWhy #Michalovce?
The town is 40km from the border with the Transcarpathian region of #Ukraine. There is a wide motorway between #Michalovce and Uzhgorod, which makes it relatively easy to transport bulky goods without attracting much attention.
North of the town in #Valashkovets there is a large artillery firing range, where Slovak army exercises were regularly held and the Zuzana 2 SAU was run-in immediately after assembly.
The town itself has a railway station and various factories of the former Slovak industrial giant CASSPOS for the production of pipes, cisterns, motors for household appliances.
In addition, there are branches and industrial workshops for the production of air conditioning equipment (Mazok), chipboard, polystyrene (IZO4), truck trailers (Kerex) and cables for computer technology (Comline Elektronik).
β¦οΈProspects
The choice of location is extremely good. #Michalovce is close to the Transcarpathian region, the high traffic capacity of the transport hubs allows fast and efficient transfer of damaged equipment for repair and back.
The town itself has always been one of the main industrial centres in #Slovakia. #Michalovce has a variety of enterprises, including high-tech ones, which could easily be converted for military needs.
If before it was necessary to send equipment to various countries of Eastern Europe, #Germany and #France for repair of the western armament, now the restoration of the main types of equipment will take place in 40 km from #Ukraine.
And this can only be prevented by a complete removal of railway and transport infrastructure, which at the moment is practically impossible.
As we π wrote earlier, western #Ukraine is crucial in the current conflict and is the main transit hub for supplies from. And all necessary measures will be taken to safeguard and protect it.

β The underground was disrupted and emergency shutdowns of the city's consumers were required.
As #Kharkov is largely supplied by the Zmiyevskaya TPP, the situation was already stabilised by evening.
πΉ CHPP-5 in #Kiev: The largest generating station in #Kiev with installed capacity of 700MW was hit. The station has been attacked several times before, but the CHPP has not stopped its operation.
Today's strike, according to preliminary information, hit the engine room and caused power outages in the southern and western districts of #Kiev.
πΉ#KrivoyRog TPP: The blow hit the plant's turbine hall. At least one of the turbines with a 282MW generator was seriously damaged.
β The building was also severely damaged, the roof on two bays collapsed and process steam lines were damaged. The plant temporarily halted generation, affecting power supply to #Dnepropetrovsk region and Krivoy Rog.
The nature of the damage does not allow us to talk about a complete shutdown of the plant.
πΉ#Dnieper HPP: One of the missiles broke through the roof and caused a fire in the engine room of Dnepr HPP-1. The second one allegedly hit one of the 13.8/154kV generator transformers on the 154kV switchyard.
However, the damage can hardly be called severe - according to preliminary data, only one hydro unit was damaged.
πΉ#Burshtynskaya TPP: There is no photo and video material confirming the damage to the plant.
However, circumstantial evidence - a sharp increase in power flows from #Hungary and #Slovakia - suggests that the TPP has stopped generating electricity and has still not been able to start generating it.
πΉPS Khmelnitsky 330: A 330/110 kV autotransformer was damaged and caught fire. Part of Khmelnitsky was left without power.
πΉPS Usatovo 330: A fire was detected in the substation area. The cause could have been either missile strikes or overloading.
As a result of the fire, the flow of electricity from #Moldova and #Romania to #Ukraine through the substation has completely stopped, and a wave of emergency power cuts went through #Odessa.
πΉ Shepetovka 330: A fire was detected in the 330 kV switchgear of the substation, presumably on fire with a 330/110 kV autotransformer.
βοΈ There are reports that #Dniester HPP-1 was also hit today, but no confirmation could be found.

Two of the existing installations are now in #Slovakia to protect its airspace during the #NATO summit, three in #Poland. Five systems are undergoing modernization, and, thus, the German Armed Forces have only one Patriot at their disposal.
The units from #Slovakia and #Poland will return to Germany by the end of the year, and hypothetically the German leadership will be able to transfer two Patriots to the AFU, thus reducing the already near-zero level of readiness of the air defence forces.

βοΈActive combat operations began on 4 June. At the moment, the AFU offensive has not stopped, but it is clear that it is losing momentum and is being maintained more to create visibility than to achieve real goals.
πΉWhat was the Offensive Plan?
βͺοΈ Initially, the AFU command planned to launch two dissecting strikes and reach two major cities, #Melitopol (and further to #Berdyansk) and #Mariupol on the coast of the Azov Sea.
βͺοΈ It was assumed that in the course of the offensive the territory with a total area of about 23,000 km2 would be captured, and in a number of directions, including the Crimean and Donetsk ones, the threat of encirclement of Russian troops would be created.
βͺοΈ In reality, a competently constructed line of defence and redesigned fire tactics prevented the AFU from succeeding.
βͺοΈ At the moment, the total area of territory in which the AFU has managed to advance is about 140 km2 in the #Zaporozhye direction and 116 km2 in the #SouthDonetsk direction, which is almost 90 times less than it was supposed to occupy during the offensive.
πΉWhat other Problems does the AFU have?
βͺοΈ In addition to problems with the failure to fulfil the offensive's main objectives, there are others. On 4 September, former Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that each day of combat operations costs Ukraine $100 million.
βͺοΈ Thus, 153 days (five months) of the offensive cost Kiev $15.3bn, but this money did not bring results. It is noteworthy that almost immediately the previously created myth about the superiority of the AFU, NATO tactics and technical superiority collapsed. Most of the expectations from the nature of the AFU actions simply did not realise.
βͺοΈ If the offensive had been successful, a number of #EU countries and the US would most likely have continued or increased the supply of military equipment. Now that almost all available conventional weapons options,- from small drones to man-portable air defence systems, have been tried, many have lost enthusiasm to continue deliveries.
βͺοΈ In addition, favourable timing has been lost. In the winter of 2022 and spring of 2023, much expectation was placed on warm season warfare. It was thought that summer and warm weather would favour the AFU offensive, but this did not happen.
πΉWhat losses did the AFU suffer?
βͺοΈ On 30 October, Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu said that the AFU had lost more than 90,000 people killed and wounded during the offensive. These are 36 brigades of 2.5 thousand men each. No other army in the world has suffered such losses since World War II. The fleet of foreign equipment supplied to the AFU has been largely confused. The experience of using American M2 Bradley BMPs, M113/YPR-765 and M1126 Stryker APCs, Leopard 2A4/A5 (Strv 122)/A6 and Challenger 2 tanks, PzH-2000, M109 and AS-90 UASs has shown that Western combat vehicles cannot fundamentally change the situation on the battlefield, while their destruction and damage have an immediate and negative impact on the situation at the front.
πΉWhat's the Result?
βͺοΈ In addition, the failure of the AFU offensive has caused a split in the once united camp of #Ukraine's supporters. In the US, congressmen are asking questions about the prospects for aid to Kiev, while in #Europe some countries have already suspended or stopped military supplies to #Ukraine, among them #Slovakia and the main military donor in #Europe, #Poland.
βͺοΈ Also, five months of intense fighting have depleted the stockpiles of arms and ammunition not only in #Ukraine, but also in the #EU, from where they were forcibly transferred in the spring of 2023. The EU will be able to replenish reserves to the level of 2022 not earlier than 2025. In the short term, therefore, one cannot count on increased supplies, and without them, the prospects for any offensive actions in 2024 look very illusory.
