No New Year's Eve party, big or small, is safe this year.

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday filed a lawsuit against the New York Police Department and New York City alleging that authorities used excessive force during the summer's racial justice protests. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, calls for the NYPD to undertake systemic reforms to be overseen by an independent monitor. It also asks for a court to declare the police actions unlawful. The 69-page filing includes allegations of dozens of excessive force violations accompanied by graphic photographs of individuals who it says were beaten and in some cases unlawfully detained by police. "There is no question that the NYPD engaged in a pattern of excessive, brutal, and unlawful force against peaceful protesters," James said in a statement accompanying the lawsuit. #facepalm
For the first time in more than a century, Virginia won’t be honoring generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson with a holiday as the state continues to shed its Confederate symbols. (#FACEPALM!) It would have been celebrated Friday. Some cities in Hampton Roads, including Norfolk, Newport News and Hampton, had opted not to commemorate the event even before a state law gave localities the option to replace Lee-Jackson Day with Election Day. The change was made by Democratic lawmakers who took control of the General Assembly last year for the first time in decades. But the new legislation didn’t automatically trickle down to cities and towns, which decide whether to follow the state’s holiday schedule or create their own. Some have decided not to give the day off to city workers. (Read more.)

DC Mayor Bowser: "I do think that it is prudent to make sure that [Guards] are being vetted, and that anybody who cannot pledge allegiance to their missions, and may be pulled by other views, needs not only to be removed from this duty, they need to be removed from the Guard." #facepalm

Biden’s aides are working to “speed up” putting Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday. The plan to replace President Andrew Jackson with the Underground Railroad icon stalled under former President Donald Trump, who is an admirer of Jackson. “The Treasury Department is taking steps to resume efforts to put Harriet Tubman on the front of the new $20 notes,” Psaki said at a press briefing. “It’s important that our notes, our money … reflect the history and diversity of our country, and Harriet Tubman’s image gracing the new $20 note would certainly reflect that,” she said. “So we’re exploring ways to speed up that effort.” Tubman was supposed to appear on the bill beginning in 2020, under plans announced in 2016 during President Barack Obama’s final year in office. #facepalm

In their report on the officer-involved shooting in Columbus, Ohio, NBC Nightly News deceptively edited the 911 call to leave out the part where the caller says a girl was "trying to stab us." They also don't show viewers the knife in the attacker's hand just before the shots. #facepalm
