The #EEA Launches the Report on the Ethiopian Economy – A Landmark Return After Seven-Year Hiatus
After a seven-year pause, the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) has officially relaunched its flagship publication, The Report on the Ethiopian Economy, reaffirming its pivotal role in promoting evidence-based economic discourse in Ethiopia.
The last edition of the report was published in #2018. At the time, it was widely recognized as an authoritative reference for policymakers, researchers, and development partners. It provided a dual-level analysis, offering an in-depth focus on a central economic theme while delivering broader sectoral updates. The 2025 edition honors this legacy while introducing a bold and forward-looking approach.
Covering the period from 2000/01 to 2023/24, the revitalized report delivers a panoramic and data-driven assessment of Ethiopia’s economic transformation over the past two decades. It utilizes standardized and rigorous analytical tools across all nine chapters, ensuring a more consistent and in-depth evaluation of macroeconomic trends, sectoral performance, fiscal and financial developments, labor market dynamics, poverty and inequality, and governance. This edition was authored by a team of respected EEA researchers: Dr. Degye Goshu, Dr. Arega Shumetie, Dr. Lamessa Tariku, and Dr. Tasew Tadesse, whose combined expertise offers a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the Ethiopian economy.
The launch event, held at EEA Headquarters in Addis Ababa, drew significant national and international media attention. Representatives from major mainstream outlets as well as digital platforms attended, reflecting the renewed importance of the report in public and policy conversations.
Opening remarks were delivered by EEA CEO Professor Mengistu Ketema, who emphasized the report’s importance in bridging research and policymaking. Dr. Abule Mehare presented the report’s key findings, followed by an engaging Q&A session with media representatives.
The 2025 report is expected to reclaim its place as a cornerstone reference for economic planning, academic inquiry, and policy evaluation. With its enhanced methodology and long-term outlook, it aims to inform strategic decisions that foster sustainable, inclusive economic growth and institutional resilience.
