Bitcoin hegemony
Digital asset selection has transitioned towards higher quality names, leading bitcoin dominance to steadily increase above 50% for the first time since April 2021. The main reason is ETF applications from major players, which confirms the promise of cryptocurrencies as a new asset class.
Bitcoin's originality helped it outperform traditional assets in 2H23, and Coinbase expects this trend to continue next year. The upcoming halving will support interest in BTC.
A new trading regime
Over the past crypto winter, there has been a fair amount of infastructure, layer-2s, restaking, ZK proofs, etc. Now the focus of market participants will shift more to real projects that will help attract mass users.
Many rely on web2 analogs - games, payments or social networks, but #DePin and #DeComp are also interesting.
The layer-1 equilibrium
Ethereum's dominance among smart contract platforms remains unwavering. Moderate activity in the onchain over the past two years has reduced demand for "general purpose" #L1 alternatives, so L1s have begun to divide into sectors. Some are focused on #gaming or #NFT (#BEAMX, Blast, #IMX, for example), while others are aimed at #DeFi (#dYdX, #OSMO) and/or institutional participants (#AVAX's Evergreen subnet, #Kinto). Modular blockchains are emerging (#TIA) and this trend will continue into 2024.Other EVM-compliant L1s are choosing to focus on executing smart contracts, moving to Ethereum L2, such as #CELO. #SOL is an important part of crypto. The value of these blockchains ultimately still comes down to what projects are built on them and how much they are in demand.
The evolution of layer-2s
The rapid development of #L2 has not led to a decline in activity in the core ETH network, but a drag on activity from Alt L1. Good solutions #OP Stack, #MATIC CDK and #ARB Orbit have emerged, allowing people to build their rollups faster. Modular L2s are emerging. #Eclipse relies on (1) Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) for transaction execution, (2) Celestia for data availability, (3) Ethereum for computation (security), and (4) RISC Zero for zero-knowledge fraud proofs.
Since the Cancun (#Dencun) fork is also just around the corner in 1Q24, we may also see a reduction in transaction fees for L2s settling in Ethereum.
