#META released a report. Where it reported gigantic spending on its metaverse, and an increase in that spending next year. With the advertising market slowing down and Apple harassing it.

In total, META spent $9.4 billion on the development of the metaverse over 2022. How much is a lot, judge for yourself.

It cost $3.1 billion to make the top 10 most expensive movies in the world [incl. Pirates of the Caribbean and Marvel blockbusters, etc.].

The cost of developing the top 10 most expensive games in history was another $2.1-2.6 billion [incl. GTA IV, V, VI (with development costs varying from $500 million to $1B), Destiny, CoD, Battlefield 4, Cyberpunk 2077, etc.].

So META spent more in 2022 to develop its metaverse than all of that combined and will spend even more in 2023.
META is now capitalized at $263 billion [a year ago it was over $1T].

#AMZN did not report as well as expected, it was down 20% in the moment, losing $250B of capitalization. It now trades at $96 a share, making AMZN a company with a market cap of less than $1T.

#GOOGL was also down 10%. But so far it's holding above a trillion. Market Cap. - $1.2T.

#AAPL is the only one holding up well. After the report, it's holding at the same levels. Market Cap. - $2.3T

With Bedrock, Amazon enters the generative AI race

AWS today unveiled Amazon Bedrock, which provides a way to build generative AI-powered apps via pretrained models from startups including AI21 Labs, #Anthropic and Stability AI. Available in a “limited preview,” Bedrock also offers access to Titan FMs (foundation models), a family of models trained in-house by AWS.

With Bedrock, AWS customers can opt to tap into AI models from a variety of different providers, including AWS, via an API. The details are a bit murky — Amazon hasn’t announced formal pricing, for one. But the company did emphasize that Bedrock is aimed at large customers building “enterprise-scale” AI apps, differentiating it from some of the AI model hosting services out there, like Replicate (plus the incumbent rivals Google Cloud and Azure).

Amazon to sell cars online, starting with Hyundai

The e-commerce giant along with new partner Hyundai announced Thursday at the 2023 LA Auto Show that it will start selling vehicles on its website in the second half of 2024. Hyundai vehicles will be the first vehicles sold on Amazon.com’s U.S. store with other brands following later in the year.

The Amazon car sales section will allow customers to shop for vehicles in their area based on a range of preferences, including model, trim, color, and features, choose their preferred car, and then check out online with their chosen payment and financing options. Customers will be able to buy a vehicle online and then pick it up or have it delivered by their local dealership, according to Amazon.

Amazon says that a cluster of 100,000 Trainium chips can train a 300-billion parameter AI large language model in weeks versus months. That’s about 1.75 times the size of OpenAI’s GPT-3, the predecessor to the text-generating GPT-4.
Amazon say Trainium2 will become available to AWS customers “sometime next year.”

The second chip Amazon announced the Arm-based Graviton4, is intended for inferencing. Graviton4 will be available in Amazon EC2 R8g instances, which are available in preview today with general availability planned in the coming months.|

Normally, the introduction of an AI chip from a cloud provider might present a challenge to Nvidia, but in this case, Amazon is simultaneously expanding its collaboration with #NVDA.

Nvidia’s best-performing chips are reportedly sold out until 2024.
