Congrats to Asst Prof Yang You for making this year’s Forbes 𝟑𝟎 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝟑𝟎 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 list! 🏆

Dr You was recognised for breaking the world record in 2017 and 2019 – for ImageNet and BERT machine learning training speeds respectively. ImageNet is a visual database used for image recognition, while BERT is a benchmark used by Google and Microsoft to measure a machine's understanding of human languages.

🔎 Can AI identify you in photos without compromising your privacy?

Analysing human attributes such as emotions, gender, and age in images and videos is important for many applications. However, analysing images of faces raises serious privacy concerns as they reveal one's identity. Learn more about privacy concerns related to image and video data analytics, and delve into privacy research utilising deep learning models in this free webinar by N-CRiPT and SGInnovate

Imagine getting an enviable parking lot next to the lift lobby on a crowded weekend or busy workday. Or even securing lots in advance for VIPs at important events – all through a mobile app! 📲 🚗

NUS start-up SureReserve has made this possible with a smart-parking technology solution that is able to guide drivers to their designated lots in real time. Read more to find out how the app makes use of the Internet of Things (IoT) to improve efficiency.

A massive breach was linked to cyber firm SolarWinds last December, letting hackers into thousands of government agencies and companies. The breach was unique not only in its scale, but also in its method of attack. NUS Computing Professor Abhik Roychoudhury and Associate Professor Liang Zhenkai weigh in on what we've learnt from such cyberattacks.

Kudos to NUS Computing alumnus Prantik Mazumdar (CEG, 2005) and his wife, who have raised more than S$192,000 in a crowdfunding campaign to procure oxygen for COVID-19 patients in India! 💖 💪

Using crowdfunding platform Milaap (which was founded by NUS Computing alumni Anoj Viswanathan and Sourabh Sharma) to raise funds, the couple are working with two organisations to procure and deliver some hundred plus oxygen concentrators to India. The first batch of oxygen concentrators have landed in New Delhi, and are currently deployed across the country.

Wearables have altered our relationship with exercise, but how do they also impact the other pillar of healthy living — eating right? 🏃🏃‍♀️🍽️ 🥘

NUS Computing Professor Atreyi Kankanhalli & her team examine if mobile health apps have impacted eating behaviour and health outcomes in users, such as weight loss. 📲

To all the mothers out there, Happy Mother's Day! 💐
The ubiquitous presence of cameras like CCTV cameras and mobile phones has resulted in an explosion of images and video data. While these visual data present advantages, they come with a cost: potential breach of privacy and confidentiality, particularly for information related to human posture and actions.

CONGRATS to our student Li Qinbin for winning the PREMIA Best Student Paper Gold Award! 🎉
Qinbin worked with NUS Computing Assoc Prof He Bingsheng on a new federated learning framework for Gradient Boosting Decision Trees that prevents data 'leaks' by sharing gradients, instead of raw data, between devices.

GOOD NEWS: Asst Prof Reza Shokri and his co-authors have won the prestigious IEEE Security and Privacy Test-of-Time Award 2021!

They received the award for their paper on quantifying location privacy, which was presented at the IEEE Security and Privacy symposium in 2011. In the study, they proposed a formal framework for quantifying the privacy risks of sharing location data, and evaluating the effectiveness of privacy-preserving algorithms.

The Test-of-Time Award recognises research papers that have made a broad and lasting impact on both research and practice in computer security and privacy. Congrats!
