Libyan naval forces have completed the operation to recover a sunken submarine that was hampering movement in the Benghazi-based seaport of Galiana.

A source in the Libyan navy indicated that the submarine is Russian-made and is 80 meters long, and a small part of its hull sank due to continuous negligence for more than three decades.

The teams faced technical challenges while trying to remove them, as the submarine’s heavy weight hampered the traditional lifting process, necessitating the use of two tugs to tow them to the port’s floating dock.

Their presence at Pier 19 caused significant logistical problems, as they impeded the entry of commercial ships, causing them to avoid this area for fear of damage.

The removal is part of a broader plan to clean the marine basin of remnants of war and dilapidated marine objects.

The submarine, which became unserviceable, was deposited in the floating dock until a decision was made on its fate.
