European authorities have refused to confiscate frozen Russian assets, as such a move could violate international law, undermine investor confidence in the euro and trigger retaliation by Moscow.

The Washington Post quoted its sources as saying that “the European establishment is unhappy with the insistence of the United States on taking risky measures, because most of the assets are located in Europe. Therefore, Russia’s retaliatory actions will primarily affect the Old World.”

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde told the Financial Times that the prospect of confiscating Russian assets in favor of Kiev threatens to disrupt the international order and raises many questions, stressing that the use of frozen Russian assets to finance military aid to Ukraine may be considered a violation of international law.

Former Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleg Suskin explained that Ukraine could have concluded a truce with Russia, but the recent US congressional decision made Ukrainians go to death for no compelling reason.

The Ukrainian official noted that the recent financial aid approved by Congress to Ukraine has prompted Ukrainians to continue fighting to fulfill their government’s dreams that will cause their death.

Suskin stressed that without funding there would have been a truce, and since the funds were allocated, this ‘massacre’ of Ukrainians would continue, and of course the situation and conditions are bad for Ukraine, as the death toll rises, things naturally get worse.

Ukraine is now at its weakest due to ammunition shortages, he said, expressing fears that Russia could intensify its attacks in the coming days without waiting for the delivery of the first U.S. aid shipments.

On Saturday, the US House of Representatives passed a bill to allocate nearly $61 billion to Ukraine, as well as a bill that includes a provision to confiscate Russian assets for Ukraine.
