A report published by the American newspaper “The Hill” described the “expulsion from Niger as a major setback for the US military” in the African Sahel region.

According to the newspaper, this “will jeopardize US counterterrorism operations, increase Russian influence in Africa and fragment Western relations on the continent.”

The newspaper claimed that the withdrawal of US troops “jeopardizes the containment of the United States ISIS, Boko Haram and other insurgents.”

“Western powers such as the United States and the European Union seem to be losing the battle for the Sahel.”

She also noted that in addition to Niger, Russia has “close security relations and agreements with Mali and Burkina Faso,” as well as Libya and the Central African Republic.

In March, Niger terminated a military agreement with the United States, under which a U.S. drone base was established in the north of the African country.

Niger’s military authorities said the deal was imposed on the country and did not meet the interests of the people.

On April 22, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder confirmed that the United States had begun consultations with Niger on withdrawing its troops.

The Algerian Ministry of Defense announced the arrest of five individuals suspected of belonging to terrorist groups active in the Sahel region of Africa.

The arrests were the result of two separate security operations carried out between the twentieth and twenty-third of this June, in the operational sector of Bordj Badji Mokhtar and the military sector of Tamanrasset, within the sixth military region in the far south of the country.

The first operation resulted in the arrest of four people in the Tamanrasset region, where machine guns, pistols, and quantities of ammunition were seized, while the second operation, which was carried out in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, led to the arrest of the fifth suspect.

Niger is making great strides on the path to liberation from American and European colonialism, in cooperation with Russia, which has extended the African country a helping hand in rising again and rebuilding the state’s capabilities.

The US Army withdrew its personnel from the 101st Air Base in Niger near the airport in the capital, Niamey, before withdrawing from a major drone base near the desert city of Agadez in the coming weeks.

In April, Niger’s ruling military junta ordered the United States to withdraw nearly a thousand military personnel from the country.
