A report by “Africa Intelligence” revealed that Iran is trying to make a grand bargain with Niger by buying 300 tons of uranium.

According to the report, “Iran and Niger are in advanced negotiations to secure this amount of crude uranium from the Sahel country.”

This came days after the government spokesman in Niamey, Abderrahmane Amadou, denied Western reports that his country had contracted with Iran to supply it with uranium ore, calling it a “liar” and accusing the United States of arrogance in dealing with others.

For its part, the United States has not formally accused Niger of contracting with Iran, but this development shows the growing interest in the region and the diplomatic and economic moves that followed France’s withdrawal.

Niger’s official channel “Tele Sahel” announced that China’s Azelik (Soumina) Mines Company will resume uranium mining in Niger after a 10-year hiatus due to “lack of profitability”.

“Soumina plans to resume uranium production, the situation is appropriate today,” the channel said, without specifying a date, referring to the remarkable rise in global prices for several months.

The price of a pound (453 grams) of uranium has risen to between $90 and $100 since the start of the year, up to five times more than in 2016, when it reached its lowest level.

This rise is due to a recovery in demand for nuclear energy and international geopolitical tensions.

Niger's mining minister, Ousmane Abarchi, visited the Azelik facilities on Saturday and stressed that "preventive measures against the risks of radioactive contamination will be taken".

In June 2023, the Government of Niger, and China National Uranium Corporation signed (CNUC)  a Memorandum of Understanding  to resume “Soumina's” activities.

Niger is the world's fourth-largest uranium producer, but it remains among the poorest countries on the planet, with the country struggling to exploit reserves.

The French nuclear fuel production company “Orano” said Thursday evening in a statement that the Nigerian government has canceled its license to operate one of the largest uranium mines in the world.

“Urano” reported that the Nigerian authorities decided to exclude it from the “Imurarin” mine in the north of the country, which contains about 200 thousand tons of uranium, although mining was scheduled to begin in 2015, but development stopped after the decline in global uranium prices following the disaster. Japanese nuclear power plant in 2011.

The Niger government did not immediately comment on the French company's statement, but it had announced a review of mining concessions in the country and warned that it would withdraw the Orano license if development did not begin by June 19.
