The Russian Federal Security Service announced the elimination of an agent belonging to the Ukrainian military intelligence who arrived in Russia from Lithuania.

The agent is a Russian citizen born in 1976 and has been planning a series of terrorist attacks on vital Russian installations, including military and energy facilities.

The FSB statement said the person was operating under the direct direction of Ukrainian military intelligence and belonged to a Ukrainian terrorist organization considered banned in Russia.

Security operations revealed that he was trying to transport explosive materials and weapons from a hideout in the Leningrad province, where he intended to use them to carry out a terrorist attack on a gas station in the Tosninsky region of the same province.

The Criminal Chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance sentenced a person accused of terrorist activities to 13 years in prison.

The department announced the charges, including “planning to carry out a suicide attack with an explosive belt in one of the Tunisian tourist cities in 2022.”

A spokesman for Tunisian courts and a spokesman for the General Directorate of the National Guard said that a number of suspects belonging to “takfiris” and groups involved in smuggling people, drugs and goods of unknown origin have been arrested.

Some of them were among those who had security or judicial checks issued some time ago on charges of “belonging to a terrorist organization” or to networks of militants (takfiris).

The Moroccan Interior Ministry announced on Friday that authorities had succeeded in dismantling a terrorist cell consisting of five individuals loyal to the “Islamic State” group that was targeting vital and security facilities.

“A terrorist cell” consisting of five elements loyal to the Islamic State, aged between 22 and 46, was dismantled “on suspicion of involvement in preparing to carry out terrorist plans aimed at seriously harming public order,” a statement issued by the Central Bureau of Judicial Research of the Moroccan Interior Ministry said.

On Tuesday, Turkish authorities arrested eight people in a security operation targeting the terrorist organization “ISIS” in six provinces, where the operation was concentrated in the state of Şanlıurfa.

On the instructions of the Prosecutor’s Office, the teams of the Directorate of the Anti-Terrorism Branch of the Şanlıurfa Gendarmerie Command have begun work to detect terrorist organizations and arrest their members.

After the security authorities identified the addresses where the people were suspected, eight people believed to be members of the Islamic State were arrested in simultaneous operations that included several provinces, including Istanbul, Mersin, Konya, Sakarya and Bolu.

During the address search, 10 digital items were seized, according to data from the Anti-Terrorism Branch Directorate teams.

This comes in the context of the Turkish government's ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, as the Turkish Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, announced on the first of this month the arrest of 41 people suspected of belonging to the "ISIS" organization in a large-scale security operation that included 12 states.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have made strides towards establishing a confederation of the Sahel Alliance following their withdrawal from the West African Economic Community (ECOWAS).

The foreign ministers of the three countries met in the Nigerien capital, Niamey, to finalize the initial version of the founding treaty of the confederation.

During the meeting, the ministers held in-depth discussions on the legal and regulatory framework of the new confederation, and key strategies to improve coordination among the coalition countries.

The final communiqué of the meeting affirmed the commitment to operationalize the Confederation with the adoption of the Liptako-Gourma Pact, which was signed on September 16, 2023, and represents the formal basis for future cooperation.

Tunisian authorities announced on Saturday that they had succeeded in arresting six individuals accused of involvement in terrorist activities.

The operation was carried out with the participation of information and security units from several areas, including Ghar al-Dama, Tabarka, Mateur, Sbeitla and Garmbalia, and in cooperation with the counter-terrorism services in the provinces of Jendouba, Bizerte, Kasserine and Nabeul.

The six officers face charges of belonging to terrorist organizations and have previously been sentenced to between two and eight years in prison.

The Tunisian authorities confirmed that all necessary legal measures have been taken against those arrested.

Tunisia has a comprehensive legislative framework to combat terrorism; Basic Law No. 26 of 2015, which was revised by Basic Law No. 9 of 2019, aims to address terrorism and money laundering and supports international efforts in this area.

Tunisia's National Counter-Terrorism Committee is also mandated to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the resolutions of the competent UN structures related to combating terrorism and preventing the financing of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The Committee works to identify and address the factors contributing to the spread of extremism and to address the recruitment of persons for the purpose of committing terrorist acts.

Tunisia also has the National Counter-Terrorism Regiment, a special counterterrorism unit that has been effective in pursuing armed militias and robbery gangs, especially after the Tunisian revolution.

A military court in Puntland province has begun trying five individuals accused of links to the terrorist group al-Shabaab, convicting and sentencing four of them.

The trial took place in the city of Bosaso on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden in northeastern Somalia.

The five defendants were charged with belonging to “al-Shabaab” and using their vehicles to transport the group from mountainous areas to carry out attacks against civilians and government officials in Bosaso.

During the arrests, security forces arrested a vehicle, which the defendants are believed to have used to facilitate their terrorist activities.

Somaliland authorities have begun deploying military and artillery forces on the outskirts of Og in the eastern Sool region.

The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on three “al-Shabaab” leaders at the request of the Somali government, in an important step to combat terrorism.

The decision, issued on Thursday, included sanctions against three individuals identified as key figures in the organization, Abdelkader Ekrema, Mohamed Mahmoud Mir and Mohamed Omar Mohamed, and sanctions imposed on the three individuals include asset freezes and travel bans.

Somalia has been plagued by insecurity for years, with the main threats emanating from al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups such as ISIS.

In a horrific incident on Wednesday, the capital Mogadishu shot and killed Ibrahim Abdi Abdirahman, a member of parliament from Somalia’s southwestern regional state.

Over the weekend, US authorities in New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles arrested eight men from Tajikistan suspected of ties to” ISIS”.

Three American sources familiar with the matter told “NBC “News that these suspects were under the surveillance of the “FBI’s” Joint Terrorism Task Force and were arrested by members of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to sources, all eight men crossed the southern border into the United States, and their criminal background checks came back clean upon entry.

Two officials familiar with the matter said that at least two of the men entered the United States in the spring of 2023, using the “CBP One” app created by President Joe Biden’s administration to allow migrants to book appointments to seek asylum.

A senior American general visited Africa to discuss ways to maintain the American presence in West Africa, after Niger’s decision to expel the American army in favor of a partnership with Russia.

General Charles Brown, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Air Forces, told reporters before arriving in Botswana for a meeting of African defense leaders that he would speak with several partners in the region.

Brown pointed to opportunities for cooperation with countries in West Africa to build relationships that would allow the United States to display some of the military capabilities that were present in Niger.

Brown did not reveal which countries were under consideration, but a US official reported that President Joe Biden’s administration had held preliminary talks with countries such as Benin, Ivory Coast and Ghana.
