The Sudanese Foreign Ministry accused Britain of changing the format and nature of the closed consultations session held by the UN Security Council on Sudan last Monday.

The ministry said in a statement that “the session discussed the general Sudanese situation, after it was dedicated to discussing Sudan’s complaint against the UAE.”

The ministry expressed its dismay at this shift, noting that Britain ignored its moral and political role as a permanent member of the council, “and by virtue of its colonial past in Sudan, whose innocuous effects continue, in exchange for its commercial interests with the UAE.

The ministry continued: “Britain’s protection of the largest financier of war in Sudan, coupled with the revelations in the British press that the British government held secret meetings with the Rapid Support Militia, makes it a partner in responsibility for the atrocities committed by the terrorist militia and its sponsor.”

The ministry explained that what happened in the session “coincided with what was revealed by the British newspaper (Sunday Times) on April 28, 2024, that the UAE is exerting severe pressure on Britain to protect it in the Security Council, after exposing its role in fueling the war in Sudan with its continuous support for the terrorist Rapid Support Militia.”

Sudan’s Foreign Minister-designate, Hussein Awad Ali, announced on Tuesday that his country does not mind the resumption of Jeddah talks, stressing Sudan’s commitment to these talks.

Awad Ali explained that the success of any future dialogue requires a commitment by the Rapid Support Forces.

He stressed that the city of Jeddah is an important platform for Sudanese talks, adding: “We will not allow another platform for dialogue to destroy the platform for dialogue in the city of Jeddah.”

The minister-designate stressed that the Sudanese government has opened all crossings for humanitarian aid and has not obstructed or closed them.

For more than a year, Sudan has been mired in a conflict between the military, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, which has killed thousands of Sudanese.

The minister pointed out that all international efforts so far have not succeeded in urging the conflicting parties to negotiate directly to reach a political solution that returns Sudan to its democratic path and stops the war.

The minister stated that the negotiations, which took place in Jeddah in March 2023, resulted in a joint declaration agreed by the warring parties to cease fire, bring in aid, and withdraw from some hospital sites. However, he pointed out that those pledges have not been fully implemented, and confrontations between the two military forces have continued to date.

The conflict has pushed the country of 48 million people to the brink of famine, destroyed already fragile infrastructure and displaced more than 8.5 million people, according to the United Nations.

Sudan welcomed Egypt’s announcement regarding its intention to host a conference of all Sudanese civil political forces, at the end of June 2024.

In a statement, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs renewed the confidence of the Sudanese government and people in Egypt and its leadership, as it is “most keen on Sudan’s security, peace and stability, because that is Egypt’s security, peace and stability.”

The statement pointed out that “Egypt is best able to help reach a comprehensive national consensus among the Sudanese to resolve the current crisis,” stressing that “the Egyptian role in this regard is required and welcomed.

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry’s statement appreciated the Egyptian position, which stresses the importance of “respecting the sovereignty, unity and integrity of Sudan’s territories, not interfering in its internal affairs, and preserving the state and its institutions,” and that the goal of the conference should be to reach a purely Sudanese vision, based on the fact that the crisis is “essentially a Sudanese issue.”
