Senegal’s new president, Basiro Diomaye Faye, has appointed his biggest backer in the election, Ousmane Sonko, as prime minister, one of the most vocal opponents of former Senegalese President Macky Sall.

“I understand the importance of the trust that President Faye has placed in me,” Sonko, 49, said on RTS, adding that he would form the new government “in the coming hours.”

Sonko was arrested in July 2023 on charges of “calling for disobedience”, and the Constitutional Council rejected his candidacy for the presidency in January, after which he supported the candidacy of his assistant Baciro Diomay Faye, who has been suspended since April 2023 on charges of “contempt of the judiciary” after broadcasting a message critical of the judiciary.

Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, has warned of the potential negative consequences of promoting gay rights internationally, citing the potential for anti-Western sentiment.

In a speech at the University of Dakar, Sonko called on Western countries to respect Senegalese traditions and values, stressing that there is no persecution of homosexuals in Senegal.

Defending LGBT rights is raising tensions in Senegal, Sonko said, stressing that the focus of international institutions and bilateral reports on gender issues could exacerbate the situation.

He also noted that promoting these issues could jeopardize diplomatic relations and financial partnerships with the West, stressing the importance of international cooperation based on mutual respect for cultures and values.

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has hinted at the possibility of closing the French military bases in Senegal as part of achieving greater strategic independence and strengthening national sovereignty.

More than sixty years after independence, Sonko said, "we must ask why the French army still benefits from numerous military bases on our soil," explaining that this affects "our strategic independence and national sovereignty."

Senegal "aspires to take full control of its territory", which contradicts the permanent presence of foreign military bases, he said.

The existence of defense agreements with several States did not justify the continued occupation of one third of the Dakar region by foreign garrisons.

Sonko's remarks come in the context of a regional trend towards reassessing relations with foreign powers, with neighboring countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger expelling French troops from their territories and turning to Russia to help fight terrorist groups.

“President Tebboune is keen on the need for continuous, regular and permanent political consultation between our two countries, as the challenges they face are the same in all areas common to them,” Etaf said.

Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, called for solidarity with the Palestinian people, condemning the “ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.”

In his speech at a youth political rally in the capital, Dakar, Sonko accused the world’s major powers of complicity in the ongoing tragedy of death and destruction in Gaza for the past eight months.

In a direct appeal to Senegalese President, Macky Sall, Sonko urged Senegal to support South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which accuses Israel of violating its obligations in the Gaza War under the Genocide Convention.

He said: “I will begin my speech by asking for a minute of prayer for the martyred people of Palestine… the people who are today being subjected to genocide with the complicity of all the powers of this world.
