Members of the Political Bureau of the Free Constitutional Party in Tunisia insisted on the decision to submit the candidacy file of party leader Abir Moussi for the upcoming presidential elections despite the challenges.

The party confirmed that the file of their candidate faces difficulties beyond the scope of the committee, the political bureau, and the defense committee.

Ali Al-Bajawi, head of the defense committee for Abir Moussi and a member of the party’s political bureau, explained that the party submitted a request for authorization to the judiciary in accordance with the procedures of the Independent High Authority for Elections, but this request was rejected. The request to withdraw the form submitted by the party was also rejected.

The French newspaper “Le Figaro” reported that Tunisian President Kais Saied, who is seeking a second term, has succeeded in marginalizing the opposition and crushing any potential competition, as the Tunisian presidential elections scheduled for October 6 approach.

The newspaper indicated that Saied, who submitted his candidacy based on more than 200,000 endorsements, has prepared the rules of the electoral competition in a way that makes it difficult for serious candidates to compete.

So far, 108 candidates have applied for the presidency of the republic, but they are not expected to pass the preliminary stage easily.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets on National Women’s Day, demanding the release of women arrested for criticizing President Kais Saied.

Arrests of opposition figures have increased since Saied took power in 2021, including prominent women in society. The head of the Women and Citizenship Association, Karima Brini, expressed her dissatisfaction with the continued imprisonment of women for their political positions and community activities.

These demonstrations come at a sensitive time, as supporters of the Free Destourian Party gathered to demand the release of their leader, Abir Moussi, who has been imprisoned since last October and sentenced to two years in prison.

The ruling came after she ran for president, sparking controversy over freedom of expression and the deteriorating political conditions in Tunisia.
