The struggle over the position of Libyan Oil Minister constitutes a new episode in the series of divisions affecting the country with the largest crude oil reserves in Africa, which has been going on for about 13 years.

Although the Minister of Oil and Gas in Libya, Mohamed Aoun, announced his return to work about a week ago, the reality indicates that the crisis of division will continue as Khalifa Abdel-Sadiq continues his work within the ministryโ€™s office as a minister-designate, according to what the โ€œSpecialized Energy Platformโ€ reported.

The details of the crisis go back to Tuesday, March 26 (2024), when the Administrative Control Authority issued a decision to suspend Libyan Oil Minister Mohamed Aoun from work, due to what it described as โ€œcommitting legal violations that harmed the public interest of the state.

Hours after the decision to suspend Aoun, who denied committing any violations, the outgoing Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, decided to assign the Deputy Minister of Oil and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Oil Corporation, Khalifa Abdul Sadiq, to โ€‹โ€‹run the Ministry of Oil.

Khoury confirmed that the Libyans she met during the recent consultations expressed โ€œthe need to reach a political agreement in order to organize elections and restore the legitimacy of national institutions.โ€

Khoury considered that โ€œthe political impasse in Libya continues between the National Unity Government recognized by the United Nations, based in Tripoli and led by Prime Minister Mohamed Dbeibeh , and the National Stability Government based in the east led by Prime Minister Osama Hammad, which is allied with the House of Representatives and the Libyan National Army led by General Khalifa.โ€ Haftar.

Given the differing positions of the Libyan parties, the Moroccan initiative is still part of the preliminary preparations, especially with Takalaโ€™s reluctance to participate in previous talks, including those to which he was invited in Paris and Cairo, according to the โ€œAfrica Intelligenceโ€ website.

A member of the Libyan House of Representatives, Abdel Moneim Al-Arfi, expressed his dissatisfaction with the actions of the Head of the State Council, Mohamed Takala, and accused him of being unique in making decisions and being openly biased towards the head of the outgoing Libyan government.
