We will spend this week fully immersed in the Nenets culture - we will live with a family of reindeer herders in the middle of the Siberian tundra, where snowmobiles will throw us.
We will sleep in a thirty-degree frost in a real raw-hide tent, and in the morning, together with the head of the family, we will learn the craft of ice fishing and reindeer grazing.
From the local people we will learn about Nenets traditions, beliefs and the intricacies of the way of life of this amazing indigenous people of the Russian north and, of course, we will taste northern national treats.

Друзья, сегодня хотим еще рассказать вам о жизни самых кочующих людей на планете (!) – полюбившихся нам ненцах. Их культура кажется нам настолько необычной, ведь не верится, что где-то на бескрайних просторах нашей страны люди до сих пор живут в чумах и кочуют.
Итак, представляем вам 6️⃣ фактов о ненцах:
1️⃣Сами ненцы зовут себя «неннэче», что значит «настоящие люди».
2️⃣Символ мужского начала у ненцев – олень, символ женского начала - чум.
3️⃣За оленеводство отвечают мужчины. Мальчиков уже с четырех-пяти лет обучают готовить упряжь и управлять нартами.
4️⃣Девочек в этом возрасте обучают шитью, заготовке хвороста и разведению огня. За организацию быта и возведение чума отвечают женщины.
5️⃣Ненцы не обижают землю и воду. Очажный круг на полу чума для ненцев - вход в подземный мир. Второй раз ставить чум на прошлом место нельзя - считается, что это поранит землю. А детям (и даже собакам) нельзя рыть и как-либо повреждать землю, играть с огнем и водой (особенно бить по ней палками).
6️⃣Ненцы отмечают день рождения всего раз в жизни и получает подарок лишь однажды: семье новорожденного дарят живого оленя.

So, we present to you 6️⃣ facts about the Nenets:
1️⃣ The Nenets themselves call themselves "NENNECHE", which means "the real people".
2️⃣ The symbol of the masculine for them is deer, the symbol of the feminine is chum.
3️⃣ Men are responsible for reindeer husbandry. From the age of four to five, boys have been taught how to prepare the harness and drive the sledges.
4️⃣Girls at this age are taught sewing, gathering brushwood and fire-making. Women are responsible for organizing everyday life and the construction of the chum.
5️⃣ Nenets do not offend earth and water. The hearth circle on the floor of chum is the entrance to the underworld. The second time to put the chum on the previous place is impossible - it is believed that this will injure the earth. And children (and even dogs) should not dig and damage the ground in any way, play with fire and water (especially hit it with sticks).
6️⃣Nenets celebrate their birthday only once in their life and receive a gift only once: the family of the newborn is given a deer.

Традиционное жилище ненцев - чум.
Из всего многообразия арктической архитектуры (яранга, землянка, челюстной дом) чум по своей конструкции выглядит самым простым: прямой геометрический конус из нескольких десятков (25 – 40) еловых шестов, поставленных по кругу, на которые крепятся пологи из оленьих шкур. Чум укрывается двумя пологами, сшитыми из 30-40 оленьих шкур каждый. Как и в одежде, верхний слой мехом наружу, а внутренний - ворсом вовнутрь.
Это призвано удерживать тепло и служить максимально долго.
Вероятно, чум является самым древним из северных жилищ: по самой убедительной пока версии, переход человека в Америку произошёл через Берингов пролив - в арктической зоне во время последнего оледенения в эпоху палеолита. Когда племена атапасков, живущие в лесной зоне Северной Америки, и их соседи выходили летом из лесов в тундру, то они использовали подобную конструкцию, которая напоминала чум. Индианисты называют это сооружение вигвам.

🇷🇺TRADITIONS OF NENETS: THE ANCIENT NORTHERN DWELLING ❄️
The traditional dwelling of the Nenets people is called chum.
Of all the variety of Arctic architecture (yaranga, dugout, whale-bone house), chum in its design seems to be the simplest: a straight geometric cone of several dozens (25 - 40) fur tree poles erected in a circle, covered with a canvas made of reindeer skins. The chum is covered by two covers, sewn from 30-40 reindeer skins each. The same as in case of clothing, the top cover is fur-out, and the inside one is fur-inside. This is designed to retain heat and serve as long as possible.
Probably, chum is the oldest of the northern dwellings: according to the most convincing version so far, the transition of human to America was through the Bering Strait - in the Arctic zone during the last glacial period in the Paleolithic era. When the Atapaskan tribes living in the forest zone of North America and their neighbors went out of the forests into the Tundra in the summer, they used a similar construction that resembled chum. Indologists call this construction the wigwam.
