Это западный берег реки Омо, племя сурма. Мужчины племени, по традиции, перед боями на палках Донга 👊🏿собираются у реки и наносят друг другу боевой раскрас. В качестве красителя используют известняковый налёт на камнях. Это процедура, в которой принимают участие только мужчины.

Племя сурма с правого берега реки Омо в Эфиопии, безусловно, одни из самых стильных и, вместе с тем, обладатели одной из самых шокирующих традиций. Помимо раскрашивания лица и тела, шрамирования, а также использования цветов в качестве украшения тела, женщины сурма практикуют ношение глиняных дисков в ушах и нижней губе. Последние известны как губные тарелки.
Существует несколько версий появления этой традиции. Сурма верят, что злые духи попадают в человека через рот. Диск работает в данном случае как щит.
На самом деле, как любая подобная традиция, связанная с «модифицированием» женской внешности, ношение губных тарелок было призвано противостоять киднэппингу со стороны других племён и обращению сурма в рабство.
Сегодня это является частью материальной культуры сурма и стандартом женской красоты. Чем больше губная тарелка, тем завиднее невеста. Обладательница 20 сантиметровой тарелки не может быть выкуплена женихом меньше чем за 30 быков.
Однако, в наше время все меньше девушек сурма поддерживают эту традицию.

In addition to painting face and body, scarification, as well as using flowers to decorate body, Surma women practice wearing clay discs in their ears and lower lips. The latter are known as lip plates.
There are several versions of the background of this tradition. Surma believe that bad spirits enter a person through the mouth. The disk works in this case as a shield.
In fact, like any similar tradition related to the “modification” of the female appearance, wearing of lip plates was designed to withstand kidnapping from other tribes and enslaving the Surma.

Представительницы племени хамер из Долины Омо в южной Эфиопии, снискавшие славу одних из красивейших в Африке, уделяют большое внимание своей прическе. Косички, заплетаемые часами, хамер вымазывают смесью охры и животного жира. Ту же самую процедуру хамер проделывают и с кожей. Это не только красиво, но и практично: содержит тело в чистоте, защищает от насекомых и от солнечных лучей.
Другая уникальная особенность хамер - шрамы на их спине. Шрамы - не столько украшение, сколько своего рода знак женской чести. Это следы ран, причиняемых им в ходе церемонии инициации мужчин, когда уже
прошедшие испытание мужчины (maza) секут прутьями родственниц мальчика, только проходящего испытание. Женщины дразнят и провоцируют мужчин на удары, нередко пребывая при этом в экстазе. Считается, что поскольку сестра или родственница терпела боль из-за мужчины, она может позже обратиться к нему за помощью, если окажется в трудном положении.

Representatives of the Hamer tribe from the Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia, who are known to be one of the most beautiful in Africa, pay great attention to their hairstyle. Bunches, made for hours, are smeared with a mixture of ochre and animal fat. Hamer also do the same with the skin. It is not only beautiful, but also practical: it keeps the body clean, protects from insects and from sunlight.
Another unique feature of the Hamer is the scars on their back. Scars are not so much decoration as a kind of sign of female honor. These are traces of wounds inflicted upon them during the ceremony of initiation of men, when the men, who has already undergone the challenge (maza) swish with a whip the relatives of a boy who is just passing the test. Women tease and provoke men to blows, often staying in ecstasy. It is believed that since then a sister or relative suffered pain from a man may later ask him for help if she finds herself in a difficult situation.

Мужчины племени каро - самого малочисленного в Долине Омо в Эфиопии - признанные мастера раскраса своих тел (body painting). Для этого в большей степени используется добываемый на берегу реки Омо мел, а также желтый минеральный камень, уголь и красная охра. Раскрас воинов каро наносится характерным движением четырёх пальцев по кругу лица, а затем одним движением ото лба вниз через все лицо. Этот типичный рисунок каро был взят за основу логотипа MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS.
Поскольку каро - скотоводы, непременным атрибутом любого мужчины является автомат Калашникова. Во-первых, это красиво. Ну и надо скот охранять, поскольку у всех соседних племён калаши тоже есть. Соотвественно, чтобы коров ночью не увели, надо быть начеку. Автоматы Калашникова пришли в долину Омо из Южного Судана, от племени топоса через границу к ньянгатом, и далее к каро и сурма. Некогда, в период высокого спроса, за один АК приходилось платить 30 коров. Сейчас же у каро один старый калаш стоит как одна корова.

Men of the Karo tribe - the smallest in the Omo Valley in Ethiopia - are recognized masters of body painting. They usually use for it chalk from the banks of the Omo River, as well as yellow mineral stone, coal and red ocher. The Karo warriors apply the colors by a special movement of four fingers in a circle of the face, and then with one movement from the forehead down through the whole face. This typical caro pattern was taken as the basis for the MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS logo.
Since Karo are cattle breeders, an indispensable attribute of any man is the Kalashnikov gun. Firstly, it is beautiful. Well, they must protect the cattle, because all neighboring tribes also have Kalash. So, in order to save the cows at night, they must be on the alert. Kalashnikovs came to the Omo Valley from South Sudan, from the Toposa tribe across the border to the Nyangatom, and then to the Karo and Surma. Once, during a period of high demand, 30 cows had to be paid for one AK. Now, in Karo, one old Kalash costs one cow.

Мужчина, убивший опасное дикое животное или врага, защищая свой скот от набегов другого племени, в знак становления воином делает замысловатую причёску из глины, интегрируя туда не только свои волосы, но и страусиные перья и даже мех животных. Поскольку глина высыхает, прическа становится хрупкой как керамика. Мужчина бережёт ее как зеницу ока. Для этого он спит, аккуратно подкладывая под шею специальный стульчик-подушку, называемый borkotos. Borkotos используется днём в качестве стульчика, а ночью как подушка. Хамеры практически никогда не расстаются с borkotos.
Другое украшение хамеров - серьги. Впрочем они имеют практическое значение, определяя социальный статус их обладателя, - по количеству серёжек в каждом ухе можно судить о том, сколько у мужчины жён.

Men of the Hamer tribe in the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia pay special attention to their hairstyle. A man who killed a dangerous wild animal or enemy, protecting his cattle from raids of hostile tribe, makes, as a sign of becoming a warrior, a sophisticated clay hairstyle, which involves not only his hair, but also ostrich feathers and even animal fur. As the clay dries, the hairstyle becomes fragile like ceramic. The man cherishes it like the apple of his eye. To do this, he sleeps carefully placing a special “pillow-chair” called borkotos under his neck. Borkotos is used during the day as a chair, and at night as a pillow. Hamers almost never part with borkotos.
Another decoration of the Hamers is earrings. However, they have practical value, determining the social status of their owner. You can judge how many wives a man has looking at the number of earrings in each his ear.

Среди мужчин сурма (сури) на западном берегу реки Омо в Эфиопии более остальных качеств ценится сила и смелость. Каждый год, после сезона дождей, когда еда в изобилии, мужчины сурма из разных кланов собираются чтобы сразиться в боях на палках «донга» и выявить сильнейшего. Донга является своего рода инициацией, церемонией становления юношей мужчинами, воинами, которые в случае столкновений с соседними племенами будут готовы отстоять честь племени и сохранить их скот.

Among Surma (Suri) men on the western bank of the Omo River in Ethiopia, strength and courage are the most valuable criteria in male beauty. Every year, after rainy season, when plenty of food is available, Surma men of different clans gather to fight with Donga sticks and choose the strongest. Donga appears a kind of rite of passage, a ceremony of becoming a man, a warrior who, in case of raids of neighboring tribes, will be ready to defend the honor of the tribe and preserve their cattle.
Traditionally, before Donga fighting, men get togetger at the river and apply war paint onto each other. As a paint, limestone is used. They find it on the rocks in the river. This is a event where only men participate. Then the men do a kind of duel on long sticks called Donga in front of the girls that they want to conquer. Fighters perform naked. Fights often end in bloodshed and sometimes even the death of a duelist. However, the death of a fighter is by no means considered the norm and may result in punishment for the causer if it was caused intentionally.

Среди мужчин сурма (сури) на западном берегу реки Омо в Эфиопии более остальных качеств ценится сила и смелость. Каждый год, после сезона дождей, когда еда в изобилии, мужчины сурма из разных кланов собираются чтобы сразиться в боях на палках «донга» и выявить сильнейшего. Донга является своего рода инициацией, церемонией становления юношей мужчинами, воинами, которые в случае столкновений с соседними племенами будут готовы отстоять честь племени и сохранить их скот.

Племя Арборе, населяющее берега озера Чоу-Бахр в южной части Долины Омо, заимствовали многое как от племён Долины Омо, так и от племён, населяющих нагорье Консо. Наиболее примечательным в их внешности являются чёрные вуали, которые незамужние девушки носят в обязательном порядке. Наголо выбритая голова - признак красоты и невинности ее обладательницы.
Среди украшений Арборе широко распространены массивные украшения из алюминия, а также сандалии, произведённые из бывших в употреблении автомобильных покрышек.

Arbore tribe, inhabiting the shores of Lake Chew Bahir in the southern part of the Omo Valley, borrowed a lot from the tribes of the Omo Valley, as well as from the tribes inhabiting the Konso Highlands. The most notable in their appearance are black veils, which is mandatory to wear for unmarried girls. A clean-shaven head is a sign of the beauty and innocence of its owner.
Massive aluminum jewelry, as well as sandals made from used car tires, are widespread Arbore decoration.

Также, весьма необычной для Долины Омо является традиция татуирования лиц замужних женщин. Происхождение этой традиции не известно, но, вероятно, является способом самоидентификации племени. Между цамай и бенна разрешены браки, но всегда только в одном направлении: девушка цамай выходит за мужчину бенна, и никак иначе.

Also the tradition of tattooing faces of married women is rather unusual for the Omo Valley. The origin of this tradition is unknown, but it is probably a way of tribal self-identification. Marriages between Tsamai and Banna are allowed, but always in only one way: Tsamai girls marry Banna men, and no other way.

The Great Rift Valley is the cradle of humanity, where on both banks of the Omo River dozens of tribes live in a traditional way, and some even remain in the Stone Age. Each of the tribes is distinctive and characterized by unique traditions, such as wearing lip plates by Surma people, the initiation ceremony of Benna, where the boys must run across the backs of a dozen bulls.
Our ethnographic expedition sets off to the right bank of the Omo River, where every year, after the rainy season, Surma hold the Donga stick fighting festival, when men selflessly fight with sticks under play-off system in the hope of winning and taking any woman who came to the tournament.
