Дани веками в дни больших празднований ритуально забивали свиней. Для таких торжеств, как, например, свадьба, свиней забивают в большом количестве. И чем богаче человек, тем больше свиней нужно преподнести гостям. В культуре дани свиньи, наряду с женщинами, считаются мерой богатства. Они определяют социальный статус человека, ими владеющего. Женщины зачастую кормят грудью маленьких поросят.

Dani have always slaughtered pigs during big celebrations. For such ceremonies as marriage, they need a lot of pigs, and the reacher a man the more pigs he needs for his guests. In Dani culture pigs as well as women are considered a measure of wealth. They determine the social status of a man possessing them. Women often breastfeed little piglets.

Женщина из папуасского племени дани демонстрирует ампутированные пальцы на руке. В племени дани, когда член клана умирает, одной или двум молодым девушкам в деревне отрубают палец. Ампутация проводится каменным топором, рану прижигают листьями, которые имеют особые целебные свойства. Можно встретить пожилых женщин с несколькими пальцами на руках, оставленными нетронутыми. В любом случае, большой палец, жизненно необходимый для выполнения работ, всегда сохраняют. Вместо этого в жертву приносят мочку уха.

Woman from Dani Papuan tribe displays amputated fingers on her hand. In Dani tribe when a clan member dies, a finger is cut off from one or two young girls in the village. The amputation is carried out with a stone ax and the wound is cauterized with leaves that have special healing effect. Some old women have few fingers left intact. Only the thumb, the opposable digit essential for performing work, is spared; an earlobe is sacrificed instead.

Друзья, мы сделали интересный трекинг в поисках последних каннибалов Ялимо. Каннибалов мы, конечно, не нашли (яли уже давно ходят в протестантскую церковь), но зато прошли по нехоженым туристами тропам, подвесными мостам, купались в горных речках, среди потрясающих высокогорных джунглей Папуа, гле порой возникают мысли о затерянном рае. Здесь местное население не просит денег и вообще порой отказывается от угощений. Зато они очень рады нас видеть и непременно встречают горячим сладким картофелем и таро. Сам трекинг - очень челленджевый, по крутым склонам и очень узким тропам. Ребятам периодически приходилось «включать полный привод» 💪🏿🧔🏿
Все участники экспедиции справились с задачей на отлично! 🤘🏿
Мы переезжаем на заповедные острова Раджа Ампат - Мекку дайверов и любителей живой природы!

Dear friends, we’ve done an interesting route seeking last Yalimo cannibals. For sure we haven’t found any (Yali have attended Protestant church for a quite long time), but we walked on untrodden by tourists paths, suspension bridges, swam in mountain rivers among amazing highland jungles of Papua, were you sometimes think of lost paradise. Here local people won’t ask you for money and sometimes even refuse treats. But they are happy to see us and always meet us with hot sweet potato and taro. The trekking itself is rather challenging, it goes through steep slopes and very narrow paths. Guys had to turn on “4 wheel drive” from time to time 💪🏿🧔🏿
All participants of the expedition managed the task excellently! 🤘🏿
We go further to reserved islands Raja Ampat - Mecca of divers and those who loves wild life!

Во второй части нашего путешествия команда перебралась на архипелаг Раджа Ампат, состоящий из множества торчащих из воды миниатюрных карстовых островов. Конечно, самая красота спрятана под водой. In the second part of our expedition, the team moved to the Raja Ampat archipelago, consisting of many small karst islands popped-up from the water. Of course, the main treasure is hidden under water. Raja Ampat is home to 75% of the world's existing coral species! Sharks, turtles, sting rays and thousands of bizarre fish... The fish were so glad to see us, so they simply jumped into our hands! 🐠🦈 🐢

For centuries, the Dani people have celebrated significant events with a "pig kill ceremony". As the Dani have become converted to Christianity, these events are more commonly associated with Christmas and Easter, although smaller ceremonies are held on average about once per month in most villages. For festivities, such as weddings, pigs are slaughtered in a great number. The richer is the person, the more pigs are slaughtered. In the Dani culture pigs, along with women, are considered the measure of wealth and determines the social status of the person who possesses it.

Восемь лет назад мне выпала честь познакомиться с папой Яли. Тогда мы приехали в Курулу на пару дней и остановились у него в гостевом домике - халупах, крытых соломой. Он показывал мне свои владения, женщин, свиней, амбары с запасами сладкой картошки, потом вытащил все свои многочисленные церемониальные украшения из перьев райских птиц, учил меня стрелять из папуасского лука, созывал церемонию, кидая пронзительный клич на всю округу, и с особой гордостью показывал мне свою библиотеку...
Он любил перекинуться на английском, учил японский и всегда был самым знаменитым и, пожалуй, самым продвинутым папуасом, который при этом всегда ходил в котеке.
В августе прошлого года, когда мы приехали понаблюдать за Свиной церемонией и навестить его, вождя Курулу, он узнал меня. Мы долго с ним говорили . Папа Яли виновато сидел в своей темной хате и лишь изредка оттуда выглядывал, проявляя неподдельный интерес к тем, кто его посетил. Попросил меня пригласить всех к нему в дом. Обнимал каждого и целовал по-отечески. Говорил, что не представляет свою жизнь без гостей. Вся его жизнь - это люди. Люди, которые приезжают посмотреть на его культуру. Вцепившись нам в руки, он плакал. Он был тяжело болен.

I LOVE YOU ALL❤️ LEGENDARY PAPUAN PAPA YALI 🇮🇩

Eight years ago, I had the honor of meeting Papa Yali. We arrived in Kurulu for a couple of days and stayed in his guest house - huts covered with thatch. He showed me his possession: women, pigs, barns with storage of sweet potatoes, then he brought all his ceremonial decorations made of birds of paradise’s feathers, taught me shooting with the Papuan bow, convoked the ceremony, shouting to the whole his land, and with special pride showed me his library...
He’s loved to speak English, learned Japanese and has always been the most famous and, perhaps, the most advanced Papuan, who nevertheless has worn the koteka.
Last August, when we came to attend the Pig ceremony and visit the chief of Kurulu, he recognized me. We were talking for a long time. Papa Yali was sitting apologetically in his hut and from time to time peeked out, showing genuine interest in those who visited him. He asked everyone to come to him. He hugged everybody and kissed fatherly. He said that he could not imagine his life without guests. His whole life is people. People who come to see his culture. Clutching our hands, he cried. He was seriously ill.

Мужчины папуасского племени дани в горной Долине Балием в западной части Новой Гвинеи прикладывают значительные усилия, чтобы выглядеть красиво и соответствовать высокому статусу «мужчины». Каждый уважающий себя дани всегда имеет в закромах перья райской птицы, эндемика Папуа, которые он собственноручно должен раздобыть. Эти перья мужчины одевают для особых случаев, таких как свадьбы, ритуалы или Свиные церемонии. Роль свиньи необычайно высока в культуре папуасов. Свинья, наряду с женщиной, выступает главным мерилом богатства и успешности дани. От того, насколько много у дани женщин и свиней, настолько он близок к почетному званию «большого человека».
Свиные рёбра применяются дани как распространённое украшение. Они продеваются в большое отверстие, проколотое в губном желобке под носом. Дани также церемониально носят своеобразный галстук, сплетённый из речных ракушек, а тело вымазывают в чёрный цвет смесью свиного жира и сажи.

🇮🇩 BIG MEN 🧑🏿‍
Men of the Papuan Dani tribe in the mountain Baliem Valley in the western part of New Guinea make considerable efforts to look beautiful and to meet the high status of “men”. Every self-respecting Dani always has feathers of a bird of paradise, the endemic of Papua, at home, which he must get himself. Men wear these feathers for special occasions such as weddings, rituals, or Pork ceremonies. The role of the pig is rather high in the culture of the Papuans. The pig, along with the woman, is the main measure of the wealth and success of Dani. The more a Dani man has women and pigs, the closer he is to the honorary title of "big man."
Pork ribs are used by Dani as a common decoration. They are threaded into a large hole punctured in the philtrum under the nose. Dani also ceremonially wear a peculiar tie made up of sea shells, and smear the body in black with a mixture of pork fat and soot.

Among the tribes of New Guinea, wearing all kinds of phallocrypts (penis sheathes) is widespread. The tribes of the mountainous Baliem Valley wear holim (koteka) made of dried gourd of various shapes and sizes: the Dani usually wear those of medium length, sometimes curved, decorated with fur on the occasion of the ceremony; the Lanni have a huge diameter; the Yali wear thin and long, fastened to a rattan belt, consisting of a large number of rings (while other tribes have one or few rings), forming a kind of skirt. The Korowai and Kombai tribes inhabiting the swampy jungles wear a small leaf (dutamon) or a nutshell (bayak) on the genital organ.
The first anthropologists jumped to decision and concluded that the length of the fallocrypt determines the social status of its owner. Others suggested that kotekas are the standard of beauty. A complex study of the cultures of Papuan tribes from different regions of the island showed that the phallocrypt, along with the belt, are the mandatory (and the only) elements of the Papuans’ clothes. Without them, men feel naked. Boys first put on holim and dutamon at the age of 5 to 7 and never take it off again.

Женщины папуасского племени дани в Долине Балием в индонезийской части Новой Гвинеи, не мыслят свой образ без плетёной сумки noken. Сумка носится на голове и помимо того, что она используется по прямому назначению для переноски грузов и даже детей, она является обязательным элементом женского образа и подчеркивает красоту и женственность. ЮНЕСКО признала noken нематериальным культурным наследием человечества.
Другая традиция дани не относится к стандартам красоты, но является уникальной в своём роде. Среди возрастных женщин дани встречаются те, что некогда потеряли несколько фаланг пальцев на руках. В племени дани, когда член клана погибал, одной или двум молодым девушкам в деревне отрубали фалангу пальца. Ампутация проводилась каменным топором, рану прижигали листьями, которые имеют особые целебные свойства. Можно встретить пожилых женщин с несколькими пальцами на руках, оставленными нетронутыми. В любом случае, большой палец, жизненно необходимый для выполнения работ, всегда сохраняют. Вместо этого в жертву приносят мочку уха. Таким образом женщина, а посредством неё и все племя, выражают свою скорбь по погибшему.

Women of the Papuan Dani tribe in Baliem Valley in the Indonesian part of New Guinea cannot imagine their look without a knotted Noken bag. The bag is worn on the head for carrying goods and even children, it is also an essential element of the female image and emphasizes beauty and femininity. UNESCO recognized noken as the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
Another Dani tradition is not about beauty standards, but is unique. Old women from Dani Papuan tribe often have amputated fingers on their hands. In Dani tribe when a clan member was killed, a finger was cut off from one or two young women in the village. The amputation was carried out with a stone ax and the wound is cauterized with leaves that have special healing effect. Some old women have few fingers left intact. Only the thumb, which is essential for work, is saved; an earlobe is sacrificed instead. So a woman, and the whole clan together with her were mourning the loss of the relative.
