كيف تعلم بورخيس "الأعمى" اللغة العربية.. وهل تعلمها على يد طبيب مصرى؟
تمر الذكرى الـ120 على ميلاد الأديب الأرجنتينى خورخي لويس بورخيس، إذ ولد فى 24 أغسطس 1899، وهو يعتبر من أبرز كتاب القرن العشرين بالإضافة إلى الكتابة فقد كان بورخيس شاعرا وناقدا وله عدة رسائل.
وفي عام 1921، نشر بورخيس بياناً أدبياً، كرس فيه مشروعه الأدبي لـ «التجربة»، وعلى الرغم من فقدانه البصر، أصبح أعظم شخصية في أدب أميركا اللاتينية، وفي نظر كثير من النقاد، أصبح أعظم كاتب باللغة الإسبانية.
وابتكر بورخيس جنساً طليعياً من الأدب، أطلق عليه اسم «فيكون»، جمع بين القصة والمقال، وهو يتألف من كيان من القصة والتقارير الإخبارية، خليط من الأدب والتاريخ.
تعلم الأديب الراحل اللغة العربية وتأثر كثيرا ببعض الأدبيات العربية الشهيرة مثل موسوعة ألف ليلة وليلة، لكن يبقى السؤال كيف تعلم الشاعر "الأعمى" العربية، وما هى الأسباب التى دفعته لذلك؟
بحسب الناقد المغربى عبد الفتاح كليطو، أن السبب الأول هو أن بورخيس الذي كان يتقن اللغة الفرنسية واللغة الألمانية واللغة الإنجليزية كان يعتبر اللغة العربية لغة ثقافة كبيرة أثرت في تكوينه، وانعكست على آثاره النثرية والشعرية، ولعل بورخيس كان يظن أيضا أن تعلم اللغة العربية سيوفر له فرصة قراءة "ألف ليلة وليلة" فى لغتها الأصلية.
وتذكر عدد من التقارير أنه من حبه لهذه اللغة قرّر تعلّم اللغة العربية كذلك عندما ناهز سنّه الثمانين، عنون أحد مؤلفاته بالحرف الأول من الأبجدية "الألف".
ولعل شغف "بورخيس" بالعربية، لم يكن وليد صدفة، ومعرفته بلغة العرب، متوغل داخل أسرته، فوالده كان أول من ترجم رباعيات الخيام لأول مرة إلى اللغة الإسبانية.
وحسبما نقل عن زوجة الأديب الراحل، فإنه علم مرة من إحدى الجرائد أن هناك أستاذاً للغة العربية، يعيش فى جنيف، طلب الاتصال به، فاستقدمته إلى المنزل، وكانت جنسيته مصرية، كان شخصاً طيباً ودمثاً، سأله بورخيس عن مجموعة من الأشياء، ثم بدأ يعطيه دروساً في اللغة.
وأوضحت زوجته إنها كانت ترسم له الحروف العربية على هيئة كبيرة على راحة يديه حتى يتحسس شكلها، وذلك لأنه كان يعانى (العمى) فى أواخر أيامه.
ويرى الروائى التونسى حسونة المصباحى، أن صاحب "كتب الرمل" كان يعتبر "ألف ليلة وليلة" من أعظم الآثار في الآداب الإنسانية كلها. بالإضافة إلى ذلك اختار بورخيس أن يكون معلمه من مصر، بلاد الفراعنة الذين كان يصنفهم ضمن الشعوب المؤسسة للحضارات الإنسانية. كما اختار أن يكون معلمه من مدينة الإسكندرية التى ظهرت فيها أول وأعظم مكتبة في العالم القديم.

Fun with Americanized Arabic
Arabic is built almost entirely off of triconsonantal roots — e.g., k-t-b, which connotes the idea of writing, produces such derivative words as kataba (“he wrote”), kaatib (“writer”), kitaab (“book”), maktuub (“written”), maktab (“desk”), maktaba (“library”/”bookstore”), and so forth. But it also sometimes uses quadriliteral roots — e.g. the obviously onomatopoeic verb waswasa (“to whisper”) and the noun jumhuriyya (“republic”), from the root j-m-h-r.
Given this productive structure, Arabic can integrate loan words from foreign languages with remarkable ease. For example, talfana (“to telephone s.o.”) treats the letters t-l-f-n as a quadriliteral root and creates a verb from them.
My favorite example of such a borrowing was given to me by my beloved teacher Seeger Bonebakker, who encountered it during a visit to Iraq back when he was young, it was still a kingdom, and the British were still a semi-colonial force there. He asked an Iraqi what the man thought of the English. Oh, the man replied in very classical Arabic, he liked them, but yatadamfaluuna kathiiran. Bonebakker didn’t know that verb, tadamfala, and asked the man what he meant by it. What the man had intended, as it turned out, was that he liked the British well enough, “but they call one another ‘you damned fool’ a lot.” taDaMFaLa. Somehow, I doubt that tadamfala has survived in common usage.
One of the treasures that I acquired in Cedar City last week was a copy of H. L. Mencken, The American Language: An Inquiry into the Development of English in the United States, 4th ed. (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1937). I’ve been browsing in it with considerable delight — I first came across Mencken in my early twenties, and have long loved his writing — and want to pass on what the man who was known as “the Sage of Baltimore” has to say about Arabic in America.
It’s not very much, and things have no doubt changed considerably since he wrote. In fact, his first edition appeared in March 1919, fully a century ago, and I don’t know whether his brief discussion of Americanized Arabic was altered at all in the fourth edition from that initial one. When he was writing, as he himself says, almost all of the Arabs in America were Syrian or (perhaps better now) Lebanese Christians, with almost no Muslims or Druze among their ranks, and there were relatively few of them. Since then, their numbers have increased considerably, and the proportion of Muslims is much higher. Moreover, the descendants of the original Maronite Christian immigrants are largely assimilated.
But Mencken’s discussion offers a fascinating (and sometimes amusing) snapshot into the Arabic spoken by Lebanese Christian immigrants in the United States during the early part of the twentieth century. In what follows, verbs will be given in the third-person perfect masculine singular, which is the usual dictionary citation form. However, I offer one note to prevent slight confusion: As Mencken’s principal informant, H. I. Katibah (along with the great Philip K. Hitti [1886-1978], of Princeton University), supplied the data, the verbs appear in a slightly different form than that in which many will have seen them. Whereas third-person masculine singular perfect verbs are commonly written out in Roman letters as FaMaLa — with F representing the first consonant, M the middle consonant, and L the final or last consonant — Mencken, Katibah, and Hitti write them as FaMaL, omitting the final vowel.
And now, with the boring preliminaries out of the way, we can finally get on to the fun stuff. Mañana. (Or shall I say bukra, in sha’a Allah?)

КНИГИ, КОФЕ, ФИНИКИ
32-я Московская международная книжная выставка-ярмарка с 4 по 8 сентября этого года проходила на ВДНХ. Впервые в ней приняла участие Шарджа!
Свои лучшие издания привезли компании из десятков стран мира. Специальным гостем ярмарки стал эмират Шарджа (ОАЭ), в этом году получивший титул «Всемирной столицы книги».
Посетители выставки смогли прикоснуться к незнакомой им прежде арабской литературе, благодаря богатой программе, подготовленной делегацией издателей Шарджи. В ходе ярмарки состоялись тематические двусторонние чтения и дискуссии, в которых приняли участия российские и арабские литераторы разных жанров: фантасты, романисты, молодежные авторы, поэты, а также прошли автограф-сессии арабских писателей.
Издатели из Шарджи также провели лекции на разные темы и обсудили с коллегами вопросы будущего сотрудничества российско-эмиратских издательств.
Стоит отметить, что делегация из Шарджи не ограничилась только выставкой книг. Институт наследия Шарджи познакомил гостей и участников выставки с богатой культурой своего эмирата, а также с историческим наследием ОАЭ. Посетители смогли насладиться чашечкой крепкого арабского кофе, сладостями и финиками, посмотреть на традиционное изготовление кукол, ощутить ароматы Востока, вдохновиться арабской каллиграфией и получить на память открытку с красивой вязью от каллиграфа. Женщины с интересом примеряли эмиратскую традиционную одежду и не упустили возможной украсить свои руки росписями хной.
Свои книги также представили издательства других арабских стран, в том числе Египет, Сирия и столичный эмират ОАЭ - Абу-Даби.
Команда агентства Job for Arabists приняла активное участие в организации визита эмиратских издателей в Москву и сопровождала гостей из Шарджи как на полях выставки, так и во время их переговоров и поездок по российской столице. Обе стороны получили массу впечатлений от открывающихся возможностей для дальнейшего сотрудничества, простого общения и соприкосновения с таким огромным и богатым миром, как книжный мир.
«Всего несколько дней выставки книг подарили нам незабываемый опыт и продемонстрировали совершенно новые возможности в деле популяризации русской литературы в регионе Ближнего Востока и арабской в России и соседних странах, - отметил Вячеслав Елисеев, генеральный директо кадрового агентства Job for Arabists, выразив надежду на рост интереса к книгам зарубежных, в том числе и арабских авторов, среди российской читательской аудитории и на слом стереотипов о современной российской творческой среде в странах арабского Востока. - Книга - хороший повод дружить».

New models for handwriting recognition in online Latin and Arabic scripts
Researchers at the University of Sfax, in Tunisia, have recently developed a new method to recognize handwritten characters and symbols in online scripts. Their technique, presented in a paper pre-published on arXiv, has already achieved remarkable performance on texts written in both the Latin and Arabic alphabet.
In recent years, researchers have created neural network-based architectures that can tackle a variety of tasks, including image classification, face recognition, natural language processing (NLP), and many more. Handwriting recognition systems are computer tools that are specifically designed to recognize characters and other hand-written symbols in a similar way to humans.
In their early years of life, in fact, human beings innately develop the ability to understand different types of handwriting by identifying specific characters both individually and when grouped together. Over the past decade or so, many studies have tried to replicate this ability in computer systems, as this would ultimately enable more advanced and automatic analyses of handwritten texts.
"Our paper handles the problem of online handwritten script recognition based on an extraction features system and deep approach system for sequence classification," the researchers wrote in their paper. "We used an existent method combined with new classifiers in order to attain a flexible system."
In their paper, the researchers at the University of Sfax present two systems based on deep neural networks: an online handwriting segmentation and recognition system that uses a long short-term memory network (OnHSR-LSTM) and an online handwriting recognition system composed of a convolutional long short-term memory network (OnHR-covLSTM).
Their first model, dubbed OnHSR-LSTM, is based on a theory that describes the human perceptual system as a means of transforming language from graphical marks into symbolic representations. It works by detecting common properties of symbols or characters and then arranging them according to specific perceptual laws, for instance, based on proximity, similarity, etc.
"Finally, it [the model] attempts to build a representation of the handwritten form based on the assumption that the perception of form is the identification of basic features that are arranged until we identify an object," the researchers explained in their paper. "Therefore, the representation of handwriting is a combination of primitive strokes. Handwriting is a sequence of basic codes that are grouped together to define a character or a shape."

Arabic version of Brazil-Arab News Agency launched
The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) has launched the Arabic version of the Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA), as part of the continuing efforts to bring Brazil closer to speakers of the Arabic language.
Present during the launch in in Brasilia were Brazilian Foreign Ministry Agribusiness Promotion Department Director Alexandre Ghisleni; ABCC Secretary-General Tamer Mansour; CFA Studies and Projects Director Gracita Barbosa; Datagro representative Vivian Oliveira and other guests like ABCC C-level executives, Arab diplomats, journalists, government officials and other delegates, said a statement.
According to Rubens Hannun, president, ABCC, the launch of the ANBA's Arabic version showcases the strong relations being maintained by Brazil and Arab countries, which also impresses upon the respect and importance placed in the cultures involved.
He further explained that Brasilia is expected to provide easier access in the Arab world to news on Brazil and its relations with the Middle East and North Africa (Mena).
Hannun said: “Solid relations are built upon respect to the cultures involved, so we have ANBA in Arabic for the Arabs, ANBA in Portuguese for the Brazilians, and ANBA in English for the world at large.”
In his speech, Hannun showed that Brazilian-Arab trade figures from 2001, which was two years before ANBA went online, until 2018, went up by 413 per cent, while Brazil’s trade with the world grew by a lesser rate at 312 per cent.
“We ended 2018 as the fifth-biggest partner, and now, seven months into the year, our exports to Arab countries have gone up by 17 per cent, meaning we have already climbed to number three,” Hannun shared.
Also speaking at the event was Alexandre Rocha, editor-in-chief, ANBA, wherein he introduced the website’s Arabic version and its various sections and subject matters.
The website’s launch edition features exclusive interviews with Brazil’s Vice President Hamilton Mourão; Agriculture, Livestock and Supply Minister Tereza Cristina and Union of Arab Chambers secretary-general Khaled Hanafy.
The launch event also served as a perfect time for the ABCC to reveal its latest victories and plans for the future, including the organisation’s strategic plans for 2018-2028, which is aimed at making Arab countries into Brazil’s third biggest partner in trade.
The ANBA was established in 2003 with an aim to fill a gap in Brazilian-Arab communication. Since its creation, the news agency has already released over 50,000 articles between in Portuguese and English versions--featuring business opportunities for Brazilians and Arabs alike. As of August 14, 2019, the website has started featuring news articles in Arabic.
