Объединённые Арабские Эмираты – яркий пример страны со стремительно эволюционировавшей экономикой за счёт продажи углеводородов. До 1960-х годов хозяйство Эмиратов не носило производственного характера. Главными его отраслями были рыболовство и добыча жемчуга.
В 1950-х на территории современных ОАЭ (тогда Омана Договорного) были обнаружены запасы нефти. На сегодняшний день они оцениваются в 97,8 млрд. баррелей (6-е место в мире). Более 90% углеводородов добывается в эмиратах Абу-Даби и Дубай, большая часть при этом идёт на экспорт.
Рост цен на нефть, её интенсивная добыча и продажа позволили экономике ОАЭ стать одной из самых крупных в арабском мире. С 1990 по 2015 год ВВП страны вырос в 5 раз – с US$50 млрд. до US$400 млрд. На сегодняшний день совокупный объём ВВП ОАЭ оценивается в US$414 млрд. По объёму ВВП на душу населения (US$69 000) ОАЭ тоже находятся на втором месте среди арабских стран (уступают Катару) и на 13-м в мировом масштабе.
Несмотря на сохраняющуюся сильную зависимость от цен на углеводороды, руководство ОАЭ добилось значительных успехов в диверсификации экономики – долю нефтяного сектора в ВВП страны оценивают всего в 30%. Низкий уровень налогообложения (за исключением нефтяных компаний, банков и отелей), членство в ВТО, большое количество свободных экономических зон, открытая экономика способствовали созданию благоприятного бизнес-климата и привлечению крупных иностранных инвестиций. В 2002 году в стране начался "строительный бум", в ходе которого начали привлекаться огромные средства от частных иностранных инвесторов, получивших право приобретать недвижимость. В июле 2019 года правительство ОАЭ впервые разрешило иностранцам владеть до 100% местных компаний, в которых ранее иностранные акционеры могли владеть только 49% акций.
Диверсификации экономики способствует развитие таких отраслей, как финансы, международный туризм, создание индустриальных кластеров и других. Подобную политику правительство ОАЭ начало проводить уже в 1970-х и на сегодняшний день, несмотря на ареол нефтяной державы, экономика ОАЭ зависит от продажи углеводородов в меньшей степени.

Into the pharaoh's chamber: how I fell in love with ancient Egypt
Amid the convulsions in the years following the Arab Spring, Peter Hessler went to the ancient city of Amarna, site of another short-lived attempt to remake a nation.
They say there is something special about buying your first brand-new car, and this is particularly true if it happens in Egypt during a revolution. By the spring of 2014, my wife, Leslie, and I had lived in Cairo for more than two years, as American foreign correspondents, and we had reached a point of decision. The previous summer, Mohamed Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected president, had been removed in a military coup, and the security forces massacred more than 1,000 Morsi supporters in the capital, according to estimates by Human Rights Watch. At the time, our twin daughters, Ariel and Natasha, were three years old, and Leslie and I had the inevitable conversation: do we stay or do we go?
We had always intended to spend at least five years in Egypt. It seemed the minimum, given the richness of the country’s history and culture, and in the end we decided to stick to the plan. Purchasing the first new car that either of us had ever owned was part of that commitment – an act of determination, or maybe desperation.
Initially, the normalcy of this routine seemed reassuring. At a dealership in eastern Cairo, a salesman in a dark suit gave us a firm handshake and a good price on a Honda City sedan. After that, we scheduled a meeting with an agent at the insurance company Allianz but, at the last minute, he called to cancel, because he had just destroyed his own car in an accident. Another agent stepped in. She mentioned that she no longer qualified for auto insurance from Allianz, because she had had multiple wrecks every year for three consecutive years. She handed us a glossy brochure that read: “Our own data shows that six out of every 10 cars purchased in Egypt will either be crashed, damaged, or stolen.”
By the time we finished the paperwork, I was so scared that I telephoned a car-owning friend. He drove over and guided me through rush-hour traffic, like a tugboat, to our home in Zamalek, a district on an island in the Nile. But it wasn’t long before I started exploring the city, and then I discovered the joy of driving to ancient sites. Even at the most imposing monuments, there was something intimate about the experience, because these places had been abandoned by tourists. When we made a family trip to the Red Pyramid at Dahshur, I parked the Honda City at the base of the structure, as if we had pulled up at a friend’s house. There wasn’t another vehicle in the car park; the guard at the entrance was so bored that he didn’t bother to accompany us inside. We descended alone into the pharaoh’s burial chamber, where the twins’ voices echoed off the high corbelled ceiling.

How cinema, drama portrayed women in 40 years
CAIRO – 8 March 2019: There are certain roles in cinema and drama that were truly insightful, giving us a miniature copy about women’s life in the past 40 years, making us without exaggeration feel as if we were living in all the previous era.
On the other hand, some movies and TV series recognize the role that the media should play in positively influencing people.
Acknowledging that media is meant to make us think, broaden our horizons and help us fight wrong ideas about gender and other controversial topics, some remarkable movies and series in the history of Egyptian media have focused on women in leading roles and inspired females as a way to face social challenges and reassure the right of every girl to pursue her dream and live the life she wants.
A number of movies and series played a significant role in portraying the vital role women play in the society, addressed women societal problems, offered solutions and even change mind sets.
No one of course could live in all eras and knows what happened before he was born, but just watching a movie in a certain era may give you a glimpse of what happened in this period.
On the occasion of International Women Day, Egypt Today will take you in a tour inside the immortal life archive labelled Egyptian cinema and drama to see how women in Egypt have changed, and how drama reflected that change.
1- 678 movie
Director Mohamed Diab released his movie 678 ( known internationally as Cairo 678) one month before the January 25 revolution. 678 revolves around the problem of sexual harassment in Arab societies, through 678 bus that witnessed sexual harassment accidents to several women.
The film tackled this world wide phenomena through highlighting the life of three women of different social classes, that have nothing in common except that they all got publicly harassed. The first is Sebaa high class jewellery designer who gets harassed in a stadium while watching a match.
Her husband couldn’t accept that he failed to protect her so she decided to get a divorce and to establish an organization aiming to stand against harassment and teach women how to protect themselves from this painful phenomena.
The second is a middle class standup comedian and call center employee named Nelly who was subjected to physical sexual harassment when a truck driver grabs her and pulls her through the street.
Her family as most of the Egyptian conservative families tried to prevent her from filing a report for harassment in order not to infamous her reputation but Nelly decided not to be afraid of speaking up, and she filed a court case for being sexually harassed, unlike the acknowledged norm of keeping silent.
The third is Fayza (Bushra), a low class government employee who was subjected to sexual harassment almost on a daily basis in 678 bus. Fayza joined Saba’s association who advised her to use a pin and stab any harasser.
The three women provided a scream of millions of Egyptian girls who were subjected to sexual harassment, establishing the fact that harassment is not limited to a particular social class. The film was adapted based on real stories of women who suffered sexual harassment.
The movie was an alarm to many men and women who think that sexual harassment is not as prevalent as it really is. Cairo 678 was described by the New York Times as an unmistakably harbinger of the revolution.
The famous Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho tweeted about the film calling it brilliant, saying it should be mandatory for men, regardless of their religion or culture, to watch.
