Next-Gen Voices: The Future of XXI Century Energy ✍️

Last week, our ASEAN fellows took part in the XVIII International Scientific and Practical Conference “Energetika XXI: Economy, Policy, Ecology” in St. Petersburg.

This year’s theme — “Challenges and Opportunities for Energy and Climate Raised by a Changing Global Order” — framed two days of sharp, timely discussions on the future of global energy.

What the conference focused on:

🔗 development of low-carbon technologies and raw-material challenges,
🔗 BRICS+ perspectives on clean-energy transition,
🔗 how global shifts affect energy and climate policies,
🔗 financing CO₂-free energy in the Global South.

When it came to the young researchers’ panel, the InteRussia fellows didn’t just listen, they led a conversation on what tomorrow’s energy experts must be ready for — from low-CO₂ technologies to the talent demands of a rapidly growing Global South.

Four intensive weeks have come to an end, marking the completion of the InteRussia fellowship in Biotechnologies — a program that brought young scientists from Azerbaijan, China, Cuba, Ghana, Nigeria, and Turkmenistan together to learn, experiment, and push the boundaries of modern science.

What changed over this month? Participants grew in confidence, expanded their scientific toolkit, and transformed curiosity into practical, testable ideas.

What else did they uncover along the way?

A standout moment was an open-mic session with Dmitri Trenin, Academic Supervisor of the Institute of World Military Economy and Strategy at HSE University. Fellows discussed the role of the nation-state in today’s Russian foreign policy, the shifting centers of power, and how former adversaries can turn into strategic partners.

Here, the young specialists delved into the intersection of research and diplomacy, observing how RIAC develops analytical materials, builds expert networks, and fosters public dialogue on global challenges.

But our energy specialists from ASEAN know the answer. Last week, they visited Moscow, where the group met the people who power the whole country, explored the technologies behind its critical infrastructure, and saw how bold ideas turn into real-world impact.

From digital modeling to modern monitoring tools, Alexey Kulapin, REA General Director, introduced the fellows to Russia’s strategic vision for boosting efficiency, reducing losses, and building smarter regional energy systems.

📍 Russia–ASEAN Business Council & Global Energy Association

In forward-looking sessions with Daniyar Akkaziev, CEO Russia–ASEAN Business Council, and Sergey Brilev, a Russian journalist, President of the Global Energy Association, they discussed new avenues for cooperation: joint research, technology partnerships, and youth-driven energy initiatives.

Here, our fellows learned how operators manage pressure, flow, and safety across thousands of kilometers, as well as how digital systems enable real-time monitoring of critical infrastructure.

Through interactive models, archival exhibits, and visual installations, the group explored the evolution of nuclear science — from early reactors to modern applications in medicine, energy, and future technologies.

Shaping Nuclear Tomorrow 😁

The journey of our nuclear specialists is far from over — but one major milestone is now behind them. After two intensive weeks in Moscow filled with deep-dive sessions, hands-on modeling, and the kind of “lightbulb moments” they’re ready to move forward.

Highlights From the InteRussia Press Conference ✨

On December 9, the Rossiya Segodnya hosted the conversation "Expert Dialogue in the Era of an Emerging Multipolar World" that went far beyond a traditional briefing.

Our partners, represented by MGIMO University, Rossotrudnichestvo, Sputnik, GITIS, the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, the Pushkin Institute, the World Youth Festival Directorate, TV BRICS, the St. Petersburg State University of Economics, the Institute of Oriental Studies RAS, and Sechenov University, gathered to reflect on how professional cooperation is evolving in today’s shifting global landscape.

Opening the discussion, Leonid Drachevsky, Executive Director of the Gorchakov Fund, emphasized: “Public diplomacy begins with creating a space where people feel heard — a space that helps them find common ground. This is exactly why we created this program.”

Moreover, the experts discussed the role of InteRussia in strengthening professional connections by bringing ideas, people, and institutions into one shared space of dialogue and growth.

How InteRussia Unites Young Minds Shaping Global Affairs 📚

What stays with you after an intense academic journey — the knowledge you gained, the connections you built, or the perspectives that reshaped your thinking?

This autumn, Moscow became a meeting point for young IR researchers from Afghanistan, Belarus, Brazil, India, Mauritius, Mexico, Pakistan, Serbia, and Tanzania. What began as an academic program quickly turned into something more — thoughtful debates, bold questions, and new lenses on the world.

Here’s what shaped their experience:

✨As tradition goes, the fellowship centered on scientific research developed under the guidance of leading experts from MGIMO Institute for International Studies.

✨The fellows took part in the BRICS International School, exploring emerging global dynamics and exchanging ideas with peers from around the world.

✨A highlight of the program was an in-depth discussion on global politics and strategic thinking with Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, and Dmitry Trenin, Academic Supervisor of the Institute of World Military Economy and Strategy at HSE University.

✨Visits to the Russian International Affairs Council, RT Headquarters, and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology offered a closer look at how ideas move from analysis to media narratives and technological solutions.

✨Beyond сlasses, fellows immersed themselves in Russia’s rich culture and history through the Tretyakov Gallery and the ballet "Ruslan and Lyudmila."
