Joshua Wong posted on Facebook that his iPhone XR may be hacked by HK Police to obtain his WhatsApp and Telegram messages history.
"Arrested on August 30, my phone was seized by #hkpolice. The phone can only be unlocked with passwords. Before court resumed yesterday, I have NEVER provided any passwords to #police, nor received any notice nor warrant for a search of my mobile device.

However, #hkpolice yesterday submitted an evidence list, which allegedly included 4 text messages of mine. Police can even identify how the messages were sent out, whether it's from a mobile or desktop version of the app. Since such functions cannot be found on ordinary user interface, that can only be possible with the help of state-sponsored hacking.

It is utterly alarming that police begins to hack mobile devices of #hongkongprotesters, just like #China hacking iPhones and Android devices to target #Uyghurs. Such warrantless search is also a blunt violation of the freedom and privacy of communication enshrined in Basic Law.

I also doubt whether such a search is lawful. Now it seems state-backed hackers get involved in the crackdown on Hong Kong movement. I urge all #hongkongers to strengthen your cybersecurity."

Taiwan issues red travel alert for Mainland China, warning citizens not to visit the country. Yellow travel warnings have also been issued for Hong Kong and Macau; non-essential travel to those two regions are unadvised.

Beginning tomorrow, any Taiwanese residents that have travelled to Mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macau will be required to isolate themselves in their homes for 14 days following their return to Taiwan. Those who do not comply will face legal consequences.
