Hong Kong's beleaguered democracy movement has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize by a group of U.S. lawmakers to honor “bravery and determination that has inspired the world” in the face of repression by China that has landed many of the city's pro-democracy figures in jail. Beijing's policies have already spawned two Nobel laureates: Tibet's Dalai Lama in 1989, and political reform advocate Liu Xiaobo in 2010.⁣
