Nathan Law of HK Demostistō, who will be pursuing a postgraduate degree at the University of Yale this coming school year, has recently received multiple threats to his personal safety on various social media platforms. For example, one Facebook comment written in simplified Chinese reads “I will wait for you at school. There is no escape. American gun shooting is going to start.” Another private message writes, “If I see you, I will cut you into pieces. You are in Yale, that’s where I’m gonna find you and f**k you like a pig!”
A passage written using the name of the Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Yale was widely circulated on the internet, announcing the “Caring for Nathan Law” activity, which involves “greeting” him and “showing him what the world is really like.”
He has notified the school and the local police.

Worshippers attending mass for a prayer meeting for Hong Kong were surrounded by flag-waving pro-China protestors earlier this week in Vancouver. The organiser of the prayer meeting described the protesters’ actions as “intimidating” and “bullying”. He feared for the safety of the worshippers and felt glad the police was there to protect the worshippers, allowing them to leave the church safely. “We were praying for human rights in Hong Kong. For freedom and democracy in Hong Kong,” Chiu said.
However, the organiser of the pro-China protests refused to explain the reasons for the protests.
“You’re from a Hong Kong newspaper? Then I don’t have to respond to you,” he said in Cantonese, before hanging up.

During the anti extradition campaign in Toronto, a group of Chines students intruded and disturbed a pro-Hong Kong rally. This group of students, drove in with their Ferraris and were being recognised as the descendants of some very wealthy and powerful Chinese individuals. The leaders of the Ferrari fleet, includes the grandson of the former provincial leader of the Shandong province, Wang Renyuan , Wang Xiuzhi and Wang Yuxi and the grandson of Lian chengming, who is a high ranking official with overseas business interests, as revealed by an unconfirmed twitter post.
To discredit the anti-extradition protests, CCP not only handles by usual tactics like blocking news, making false accusations, and brainwashing, it incites the overseas Chinese students to intrude various rallies which are supporting HK in major cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Sydney. They appeared in fleets of Ferrari, Lamborghini, and other luxury cars, all with the prominent Chinese national flags hanging on these vehicles. They drive around and aggressively provoke the HK students at the site of the peaceful rallies.
On 18 Aug, a video of the “Patriotic luxury fleet” sparked attention on the internet. In the video, there were at least eight luxury limousines driving out of a car park in formation. Chinese flags were displayed and flying at the side of the cars and on top of limos and the Canadian flag were also displayed on some cars simultaneously. Some individuals, were waving the Chinese flags from the car windows. These actions are obviously in preparation another patriotic Chinese March.
At the scene of the rallies, these wealthy second generation kids, verbally attacked and insulted the HK students or anyone supporting the anti-extradition protests openly and under cameras. Not only did they mock the protestors as poor people in offensive language, they threatened to eradicate HK citizens and leave the land and the island alone.
The netizens who uploaded these videos, satirised the showing-off and bragging of these Chinese students as fearless as the Chinese government is strictly banning corruption in mainland. Some commented that these students were probably sent to Canada for refuge by Chinese corrupt officials and businessmen. These wealthy students wanted to help their parents to demonstrate devotion and loyalty to the country, but picked a rather irrational way of expression.

Justin Trudeau has spoken out: “Using arbitrary detention as a tool to achieve political goals, international or domestic, is something that is of concern not just to Canada but to all our allies,”
He said nations including Britain, France, Germany and the United States “have been highlighting that this is not acceptable behaviour in the international community because they are all worried about China engaging in the same kinds of pressure tactics with them”.
rudeau added that “we need to figure out how to engage with them, but we also have to be clear-eyed about it, that China plays by a very different set of rules and principles than we do in the west”.
His comments may further inflame tensions between the two countries, which had appeared to be trying to move on from the row. This week both Beijing and Ottawa nominated new ambassadors, although a spokesman for the Chinese foreign minstry this week urged Canada to “reflect on its mistakes” and immediately release Meng.
