Former British consulate employee Cheng Man Kit Simon announced on #Jan9 midnight on Facebook that he decided to terminate relationships with his family in Hong Kong and China, in order to prevent them from being harrassed.

Cheng released the following statement:
"I hereby declare disconnection from my family in Hong Kong and Mainland. What I do and say solely represents myself, it is not relevant to my family and relatives. I hope they can live in tranquility and peace, without external harassment and threat. We once loved and nurtured each other, now we better forget it, as we will take no more agony and worry."

Cheng was abducted in the West Kowloon Terminus in Hong Kong and detained by Chinese authorities for 15 days in August for alleged 'solicitation of prostitution'. He later revealed to BBC in an interview that he was forced to make the confession and was tortured and pressed for information about activists in the pro-democracy movement.

Police Arrest 41 Civil Servants Between June and December 2019

According to Civil Service Secretary Joshua Law, as of January 10, police arrested 41 civil servants on suspicion of activities linked to pro-democracy protests between June and December 2019.

31 of these civil servants have been suspended from duties – or "interdicted" – for the sake of "public interest"; however, Law did not say if any of them have been charged with an offence.

Chinese Human Rights Lawyers Harrassed and Threatened by CCP

The Sichuan based Chinese #HumanRightsLawyer #LuSiWei told Apple Daily that he was being followed by four black-clad men in China since a few days ago.

On January 10, 2021, outside of his residence, his handphone was snatched by another unknown man who subsequently, threw his phone on the ground and ran away. Lu immediately reported the case to a nearby police station.

Lu suspected that these unknown men have been sent by the Chinese police, and that one of the men is a government worker in his district.

He alleged that the incident was connected to his involvement in 'politically sensitive' cases which recently led to revocation of his license.

Calling it an “old fashioned harassment”, Lu condemned the series of incidents a serious threat to his personal freedom.

Lu was appointed by the family members of Quinn Moon, one of the 12 Hongkongers whose boat was intercepted by mainland Chinese authorities during a reported ill-fated flee to Taiwan in August 2020

Beijing Loyalist: "For Hongkongers who decide to leave, it’s time they had to choose: foreign citizenship or right of abode in Hong Kong"

#ReginaIp Lau Suk-yee, a pro-Beijing lawmaker and chairwoman of the New People’s Party, stated in her opinion article on Alibaba-owned South China Morning Post on January 10, 2021 that “Beijing has long adopted a ‘one eye open, one eye closed’ approach to Hongkongers with dual nationality.”

“But 23 years after the handover, those who make a conscious decision to leave and, by implication, give up on Hong Kong, should be asked to make a choice – China or a foreign country.”

Ip, a former Secretary for Secutity, suggested that, “it may be time for the Chinese government to end its special treatment of Hong Kong Chinese for historical reasons, and enforce its nationality law to disallow dual nationality.”

This could be done after a specified cut-off date. Thereafter, Hong Kong Chinese who acquire a foreign nationality of their own free will, will be deemed to have lost Chinese nationality, in strict accordance with Article 9 of the Chinese Nationality Law, Ip added.

Pompeo: US to lift restrictions on contacts with Taiwan

In a statement on Jan 10, Mr Pompeo said the US state department had introduced complicated “self-imposed restrictions” limiting the communication between American and their Taiwanese officials. He added that Taiwan was a vibrant democracy and a reliable US partner. These rules are now "null and void".

Following the announcement, Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu thanked Mr Pompeo, saying he was "grateful". "The closer partnership between Taiwan and the US is firmly based on our shared values, common interests and unshakeable belief in freedom and democracy," he wrote in a tweet.

Twitter deletes China embassy's Xinjiang 'emancipation' tweet

Twitter has deleted a post from China's US embassy which claimed Uighur women had had their minds "emancipated" by their policies in Xinjiang.
The post linked to an article by state-run media which claimed Uighur women were "more confident and independent" as a result of "reproductive health" being "promoted" to them.

In 2020, a report by China scholar Adrian Zenz alleged Uighur and other ethnic minority women were being threatened with internment in camps for refusing to abort pregnancies that exceeded birth quotas. The findings were based on a combination of official regional data, policy documents and interviews with ethnic minority women in Xinjiang.

Pompeo Lifts All Self-Imposed Restrictions Against US-Taiwan Relations

Michael Pompeo, Secretary of State of the US, said in a statement that for decades, the Department of State had created complex self-limiting measures in US-Taiwan relation to regulate the interactions between Taiwan and the US diplomats and government officials. He also said that this is a unilateral action, aiming to please the Beijing Government.

“Today, I am announcing to lift all of these self-imposed restrictions. The administration department should invalidate all contact guidelines with Taiwan issued by the Department of State.” According to the Taiwan Relations Act, the America Institute in Taiwan, a non-profit making organisation, should manage the relationship between the US administration department and Taiwan.

Pompeo added that Taiwan is one of the US government unofficial partners from the globe, describing that the democratic system of the US and Taiwan jointly supports personal freedom, the rule of law, respect for individual dignity and other values. He suggested that the statement is to confirm that US-Taiwan relations is non-essential, nor being tied up by the longstanding bureaucracy and self-imposed restrictions.

US Announces Lifting All Restrictions on Taiwan Relations.
Global Times: If Pompeo Visits Taiwan, PLA Fighter Jets Will Fly into Taiwan

Less than 2 weeks before the end of the Trump administration, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced to lift all restrictions on Taiwan relations. Global Times warned that People’s Liberation Army fighter jets would fly into Taiwan to declare China’s sovereignty over Taiwan if Pompeo were to visit Taiwan before the end of his term. Global Times also threatened the possibility of waging war. Xinhua News Agency criticized Pompeo of his “malicious intentions” and his “very poor handling of the affair with Taiwan”.

On 9th January, US Secretary of State Pompeo issued a statement announcing the lifting of self-imposed restrictions on contacts between US officials and their Taiwanese counterparts, pointing out that the US State Department had imposed such restrictions on the interaction with Taiwan on their own diplomats and government officials in the past few decades in an attempt to appease Beijing.

In response to Pompeo’s announcement, Global Times stated that the lifting of all restrictions between US and Taiwan officials would place US and China in opposing positions. If US were to “refuse to pull back before it’s too late”, and if Pompeo were to visit Taiwan before the end of his term, China would “arrange PLA fighter jets to fly into Taiwan at once” and “declare its sovereignty over Taiwan in a way that has never been done before”. Overreaction from either US or Taiwan would likely “trigger a war”. Critics warned if Taiwan were to follow US’s “absurd madness” and attempt to go “independent”, Taiwan would likely be “summoning complete annihilation”. The article also stated that China would “defend and protect the basic rules and righteousness of human interactions”, and that “those who offend China would end in self-destruction.”

Chief of China's Anti-terrorism special forces in #Xinjiang appointed to head the People’s Liberation Army garrison in Hong Kong

Paramilitary chief of the Xinjiang region in China Peng Jingtang has been named the new commander for the People’s Liberation Army garrison in Hong Kong, as Beijing further tightens its grip on the territory.

It was reported that the commanders of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison have all come from the major military regions of the PLA.

It is unusual for Peng to be appointed, given his background as the deputy chief of staff of China’s paramilitary police force.

Critics said the appointment is the latest sign of Beijing remoulding the international business hub in its own authoritarian image after the mass pro-democracy protests of 2019.

Xinjiang anti-terror general to lead China’s Hong Kong garrison

A general who led China’s anti-terrorism special forces in Xinjiang has been named as the new chief of the People’s Liberation Army’s garrison in Hong Kong, state media have reported.

The appointment comes as China toughens its rule in the international business hub, which underwent huge and sometimes violent street protests in 2019. Beijing imposed a controversial national security law in Hong Kong in 2020.

China’s official Xinhua news agency announced on Sunday that Maj Gen Peng Jingtang, the deputy chief of staff of the People’s Armed Police, had been appointed the Hong Kong garrison’s commander by President Xi Jinping.
