HKU #LennonWall torn down after student union’s contract renewal application rejected, Government intervention suspected

The Student Union of #HKU stated that the university’s accommodation committee has rejected its application to renew contract to manage the Lennon Wall, where students had posted pro-democracy comments. The wall, which signified liberty and freedom of speech, was torn down on October 10 and the site was quickly barricaded.

Earlier on 6 October, the city's Chief Executive Carrie Lam alleged that Law Enforcement agent should intervene if necessary and assist the school handling issues related to National Security Law. Though disappointed, the Union expressed that they were prepared for this outcome amidst the sweeping #WhiteTerror and #PoliticalOppression.

Video Shows the Horror of China's So-Called "Education Camp" in Uyghur

Released on Oct 10, 2020, the video shows a frail Uyghur man 'returning' from what the Chinese Communist Party government called "education camp".

The man was in a condition that he cannot walk on his own and had to be carried by another person. The health of the man is equally worrying.

The original Tweet about the video compares the traumatic scene to Holocaust caused by the #Nazi:

//This is the condition of a #Uyghur man who was lucky enough, unlike millions of others, to be released from #China's brutal #concentrationcamps in Occupied #EastTurkistan. What China is doing in East Turkistan is a 21st Century #Holocaust.//

Civil servants who violate statement of declaration supporting Basic Law or sworn oath of allegiance to HK government may lose jobs, Civil Service chief warns

The government will begin sending out notices on October 12, 2020 to new employees who have joined since July 1, 2020 and ask them to sign the statement, indicating their support for the Basic Law and the HK government, Secretary for the Civil Service Patrick Nip said. Those next in line will be staff who are on probation, while arrangements for other staff will be finalized later.

Senior civil servants such as department heads and permanent secretaries will be asked to take an oath.

In the event of a civil servant violating the statement, actions will be taken and they will be dealt with according to the government’s disciplinary system, and in more severe cases, be dismissed from their job, Nip warned.

Nip stressed that civil servants should “wholeheartedly” promote and endorse the government policies the minute the government makes a certain decision. Any personal or political opinions should not affect their work and civil servants should not publicly express their dissatisfaction with the government.

He likened the relationship between civil servants and the government to that of any normal worker and their boss. It is hard to imagine any employee who would openly criticize and confront their boss, he said, adding that no company or institution would accept such behaviour.

Posters Saying “Happy National Day, Taiwan” Appear Outside Chinese Embassy After China Warns Indian Media to Abide by ‘One China’ Policy

As the Republic of China’s national day (10 October) approached, a number of Indian media outlets ran advertisements celebrating the occasion and published related reports. To the annoyance of the local community, the Chinese embassy in India issued a letter warning that Indian media must follow the ‘one China’ principle. Indian netizens responded by congratulating Taiwan on social media with some media outlets saying they would produce special reports on the occasion. Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reported that the ruling party BJP’s Delhi spokesperson Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga posted 100 posters saying “Happy National Day” to Taiwan outside the Chinese embassy late at night on 9 October. Baga said it was to let China know that both India and Taiwan are free countries and not subject to authoritarian oppression.

According to the report, a group led by Bagga went to the embassy district late at night and posted 100 posters showing the Republic of China’s flag and the slogan “Happy National Day, Taiwan” on every lamppost in front of the Chinese embassy. Bagga told the CNA that he knew the Chinese embassy had issued a letter to Indian media to wag its finger. In protest against China’s attempt to undermine India’s democracy and freedom, he ordered 100 flags celebrating Taiwan’s national day. “The action last night,” he said, “was to teach China a lesson about democracy.”

The report also said that Bagga had particpated in a university exchange program in 2018 and spent 20 days in Taiwan, which left a good impression on him for being in stark contrast to China. He wished to thank China for sending the letter, which “made more people aware of the ugly, authoritarian country that it really is and come to know about the free and independent Taiwan.”

TikTok is Banned in Pakistan, Referring to Unfiltered “Immoral” Content

Pakistan telecommunication regulator announced the ban on the use of TikTok, a video-sharing social media application under a Chinese technology company ByteDance, as the regulator received numerous complaints on immoral and inappropriate content.

Pakistan telecommunication regulator stated that TikTok could file a complaint and they would review the ban policy after removing unlawful contents.

Reuter quoted three senior Pakistan officials as saying on Friday (October 9) that the government decided to ban the social media application TikTok as the application was not able to remove “immoral” content. A senior official who directly involved in this decision said that they had requested TikTok to set up an effective system to hide immoral and inappropriate content for many times. However, the platform has failed to satisfy the Pakistan government. The government therefore decided to ban TikTok.

Experts in Education Sector Criticise the Hong Kong Government for Firing a Teacher without Allowing Him to Defend

A teacher at Alliance Primary School, Kowloon Tong was deregistered by the Education Bureau for "promotion of Hong Kong independence" in early October.

James Hon, former chairman of the Council on Professional Conduct in Education (#CPCE), explained that normally if a case is handled by the CPCE, the decision of firing the teacher would be made after considering the complainant's and defendant’s statement at a hearing. However, in this case, the teacher was fired without being given a chance to defend.

Hon criticised the Education Bureau for treating the teacher unfairly and that it was very inconceivable for the teacher to be fired just because of one discussion section.

Leung Yan-wing, former council member of the CPCE, criticised that there was no academic rationale for the Education Bureau to fire the teacher. He also suspected that the Bureau’s decision was based on political correctness considering the fact that the Bureau has announced to change the contents of textbooks in Liberal Education recently.

Leung worried that this case would serve as a warning to teachers and stop them from initiating discussions of controversial topics from their professional perspective, which in turn will cause a huge damage to the profession of education.

Block China’s seat on human rights council over Uighurs, urges Lisa Nandy

With the government facing accusations of confusion over its relationship with Beijing, Nandy wrote a letter to foreign secretary Dominic Raab citing UN guidance that the UK should consider contribution of candidates to the promotion and protection of human rights” when voting for membership of the human rights council.

It comes after Raab last week suggested that Britain could boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022 if evidence mounts over the abuse of Uighur Muslims.

The above gestures were inadequate in the face of the “disturbing evidence of mass detention, forced sterilisation and slave labour” emerging from the region. “The UK government must step up and lead international action to provide the UN with immediate, unfettered access to Xinjiang,” Nancy told the Observer.

Allies Support Taiwan’s Admission to UN in Joint Letter to Secretary-General

Calls for Taiwan’s admission to the UN from the international community intensify. Following the 75th session of the UN general assembly, 10 of the countries with which Taiwan has formal diplomatic relations submitted a petition to the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres on 10 October in protest of Taiwan’s exclusion from the UN and made three demands.

The 10 signatories demanded that the UN immediately address the exclusion of 23 million Taiwanese from the organization. They also requested the UN to address the fact that Taiwanese citizens and media organizations are unjustly denied the right to access the UN headquarters for sightseeing and attending or covering conferences and events. The signatories further asked the UN to ensure that Taiwan can participate in and contribute to conferences, mechanisms, and activities relating to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) equally and with dignity.

The 10 signatories are Belize, Eswatini, Haiti, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, and Tuvalu. Four other countries—Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Paraguay—made a petition individually. At the general assembly, 12 out of 15 of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies voiced support for Taiwan’s admission to the UN during general the debate.

Tokyo Police to Undergo Reorganization, Stepping Up Measures Against China and North Korea

Japanese broadcaster NHK has reported that the external affairs division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) will undergo reorganization. A new unit will be set up in addition to the three it originally has, while the existing units will be better equipped. According to the report, this is a response to the increase of Chinese and North Korean intelligence activities.

Sources revealed the three existing units specialize in Russian affairs, Asian affairs, and monitoring international extremist groups, respectively. Under the new arrangement, a new unit will split off from the second unit with the former focusing on North Korean affairs and the latter better equipped to respond to threats from China.

The report noted that Chinese espionage, disguised sometimes as commercial activities, has become more active in such fields as frontier technology. Given also that China is in a fierce technological competition with the US, Japan is faced with the need to strengthen its precautionary measures. As for North Korea, Japan considers Pyongyang’s continued development of its nuclear arsenal and ballistic missiles a significant threat. The Tokyo government concluded that North Korean intelligence activities will intensify in Japan.

UK Media: China had been stocking PPEs months before the pandemic outbreak

Three years since the COVID-19 pandemic has started, US former officials revealed that China had been stocking personal protective equipment a few months before announcing the pandemic, including limiting exports of these products and purchasing them from the West. This showed that the CCP tried to hide the truth about the pandemic, confirming the theory of a Wuhan laboratory creating the coroanvirus.

The Daily Telegraph reported on 8 Oct that China had been stocking PPEs a few months before announcing the COVID-19 pandemic, including limiting the exports of gowns and masks. At the same time, China purchased these PPEs from Europe, US and Australia. These foundings raised suspcision on the source of the coronavirus and the time of the outbreak.
