Reporters Wearing Press Cards Demanded For a Stop And Search

Today marks the 6th mensiversary of the Prince Edward Station Attack on August 31st, 2019. Many Hong Kong citizens responded with flower offerings outside the MTR station. Two reporters from Stand News and a reporter who was broadcasting live was stopped and searched by the police. They were demanded to provide their Hong Kong ID cards even though they were wearing their press cards and were holding professional cameras.

According to the HKPF Website regarding valid reasons to stop and search civilians, officers “have the power to question any person about a crime or offence” and “may demand proof of identity, conduct computerized enquiries and search for weapons or drugs.”

However, the condition for searching is that “If a police officer finds any person whom he reasonably suspects of having committed or of being about to commit or of intending to commit any offence, he can search him/her for anything that is likely to be of value to the investigation of any offence that the person has committed, or is reasonably suspected of having committed or of being about to commit or of intending to commit.”

Yet the reporters who were stopped and search were already wearing press cards with their names and photos printed on, while carrying professional equipment for live broadcast and photography.

Citizens or "Rioters"? - Passer-by accused of "causing public disorder" by police when drinking beer

A middle-aged man, dressing in black and holding a can of beer in hand, was surrounded by about 20 riot police at Lai Chi Kok Road. The policemen kept bawling at him, accusing him of causing public disorder and provoking them. The man was intimated and showed his bag to the police to prove his innocence. He was searched and was let go later.

Riot Police Officers Change Their Attitude Towards Old Man After Reporters Started Filming

An elderly was trying to cross the road outside the spot, where civilians left flowers for tribute, he however was stopped by a group of riot police. The elderly hence argued with police officers. Later, when the riot police noticed that reporters started to film, they changed their attitude and allow the elderly crossing the road and even reminded him to “walk slowly and be careful”.

After being issued warning from the police, an elderly was arrested for not wearing her mask, and was taken to the police station by two police officers.

Woman Persuades Police to Destroy Personal Information for Personal Data Protection

Miss Lam said that she and her boyfriend were charged for violating the group gathering ban, but she was only with her boyfriend only. She said that she was not going to pay the fine.

Police officers copied her personal information on a notebook before copying it onto a ticket and issuing it to her. She repeatedly asked the police officers to destroy her personal information that was wrirten down in the notebook.

After much persuasion, the police officers finally tore off that page.

She expressed her hopes for more people to be aware of her experience, and take this as a lesson to learn how to protect their personal information well.

Hong Kong Police Announces the Upcoming Arrest of All Civilians Paying Tribute to Police Brutality Victims

On August 31, 2019, riot police barged into the subway trains in Prince Edward station and indiscrimately assaulted passengers and pro-democracy protesters on their way home.

Many civilians were gravely injured, and many others were seen went down on their knees, or begging the police to stop pepper-spraying and hitting them. Known as the 831 Prince Edward Incident, this was one of the most brutal incidents during the Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong.

Since then, members of the public voluntarily go to the #PrinceEdward train station on the last day of every month, bringing white flowers to pay tribute to the casualties and the victims of #PoliceBrutality in the pro-democracy movement.

On Nov 28, 2020, it was reported that Hong Kong police will arrest any civilians paying tribute outside the Prince Edward Station starting from Nov 30, 2020.

District Councilor Lam Siu-ben told reporters that since beginning of 2020, police officers often sweep away white flowers as soon as civilians put them down. Other police officers were seen closely monitoring onlookers from nearby Mong Kok Police Station. When a civilian put down a flower, they would immediately be threatened for committing littering.

Lam quoted a source saying the police will tighten enforcement from this month to disperse citizens gathering nearby Prince Edward Station and arrest those refuse to leave.

Lam said that from his observation, “police do not want to see white flowers being placed at Prince Edward station and around the area of Mong Kok Police Station".

Citizens Continue Monthly Tribute in Remembrance of Police Brutality Victims Despite Mounting Oppression

Today is the last day of 2020, which also marks the 16th month of the 8.31 incident where Hong Kong police forced themselves onto a train landed at Prince Edward MTR station and attacked indiscriminately passengers on the train, pepper-sprayed innocent civilians, and stopped medics from aiding those being injured.

Many pro-democracy protesters, on their way home after a day of peaceful rally, had fallen victim to police brutality on August 31 last year. Known as the 8.31 Prince Edward Incident, this is also remembered as one of the most brutal incidents during the Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong last year.

Since then, members of the public have voluntarily been going to #PrinceEdward station on the last day of every month, bringing white flowers to pay tribute to the rumoured casualties and the victims of #PoliceBrutality during the pro-democracy movement.

In a bid to silence opposing voices in the city, Hong Kong Police announced that they will arrest citizens going Prince Edward station to lay white flowers in remembrance of this incident, citing COVID-19 and social distancing as excuses.

Although police set up a long cordon line this afternoon as early as 4pm, Granny Wong was sighted near Prince Edward station with white flowers in late evening, holding a light sign that read “#Save12”.

In defiance of stringent police control, some citizens came to show their respect to pro-democracy protesters, bringing a prominent signage that read, “ICAC investigate proactively, arresting the plaintiff Lam Cheuk-ting instead”.

3 Years of #August31Incident, HKers in Britain not to Give Up

HKers gathered at no less than 12 British cities for the three years of the August 31 incident. Participants condemned the Hong Kong police for helping the regime to suppress citizens. They continue to ask for the truth and request the authority and the MTR company to make the CCTV recording public.

Around a thousand participants mourned the incident in front of Parliament Square in London. The host read out the names who gave their lives to the #AntiELAB movement. Names include Leung Ling Kit, the first to jump off from Pacific Place after hanging the slogan next to the building, Leung Kin-Fai, who stabbed a police officer on #Jul01 last year, Chan Yin-lam and Chow Chi-Lok, who still have an unknown cause of death up til now.

On the night of Aug 31, 2019, a group of protesters had arguments with the passengers who opposed the protests inside Prince Edward Station. Many riot police and Special Tactical Squad members then rushed into the station and had an indiscriminate attack on citizens with batons, guns and pepper spray both on the platform and in the train.

The police force even locked the station for more than 30 hours afterwards, obstructing journalists' interviews and rescue work. No one can understand the factual situation inside the station, nor can hold Hong Kong police accountable for using excessive force.
