Chinese company registered in Hong Kong plans to build a city on the outer islands of Papua New Guinea, attracting attention as China plant a flag at Australia's doorstep

According a report from ABC, WYW Holding Limited, a Chinese company registered in Hong Kong, plans to spend more than AUD$39 billion (HKD$2,327 billion), to build a city on Daru Island, the capital of Papua New Guinea’s Western Province. The island is less than 200 km from Australian territory. The Australian government has concern about China’s threat at the “doorstep” and has indicated that it will discuss the matter with the Papua New Guinea government.

ABC cite a leaked document that WYW Holding plans to establish a “New Daru City” on Daru Island, Papua New Guinea, covering an area over 100 square km, which will include an industrial area, seaport, commercial zone, along with a resort and residential area.

British newspaper “Daily Mail” also reported that the plan will cost AUD$39 billion, and further point out that in the deterioration of China-Australia relation, China looks to plant a flag at the doorstep of Australia. It is worrying that China may have ulterior motives and secretly plan to turn this place into a naval base.

China refused to provide WHO team with raw data on early COVID cases, team member says

China refused to give raw patient data on on 174 cases that China had identified from the early phase of the outbreak in Wuhan in December 2019 to a World Health Organization-led team probing the origins of the pandemic

“That’s standard practice for an outbreak investigation,” said Dominic Dwyer, an Australian infectious diseases expert who is a member of the team.

He said that gaining access to the raw data was especially important since only half of the 174 cases had exposure to the Huanan market, the now-shuttered wholesale seafood centre in Wuhan where the virus was initially detected.

Dwyer said. “Why that doesn’t happen, I couldn’t comment. Whether it’s political or time or it’s difficult ... But whether there are any other reasons why the data isn’t available, I don’t know. One would only speculate.”

HK Authorities Prosecute 12 People for Riotting in #PolyUSiege; Police Ticket and Arrest Pro-democracy Supporters

On Feb 19, 2021, the Hong Kong police arrested 12 people at midnight. The police accused them of "rioting" for their reported presence in the campus of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU) during the police siege of the university in November 2019.

More than one year after, the 12 Hongkongers were the first ones to be prosecuted among the 200 arrests made in PolyU. They were mentioned in the Kowloon City Magistrates on the late afternoon of the same day. The court refused to grant bail for 11 of them, apart from one being a voluntary first aider. The group will be detained until the next hearing in March 2021.

At round 21:30, 22 citizens (7 men and 15 women) in support of the pro-democracy movement showed support for the arrestees outside of the court. The police ticketed and fined all of them for the violatiok of the 599G gathering ban. Among the supporters, the police arrested a man in his twenties, for finding an 'Octopus' travel card with a name different than his.

UK Condemns Systematic Sexual Assault in Xinjiang’s Concentration Camps as “Evil”, Vows to Keep Pressuring China with US and Europe

Following a BBC report on the large-scale sexual assault, sexual abuse and torture in Xinjiang’s concentration camps, the UK condemned the acts as “clearly evil” after a similar statement from the US.

In an urgent question in the House of Commons, Conservative MP Nus Ghani said there is growing evidence of the atrocities by the Chinese government and even genocide in Xinjiang. Ghani demanded that Nigel Adams, the UK’s Deputy Minister for Asian Affairs, guarantee that no further ties with China will be made before the situation is thoroughly investigated.

Adams said in response that the UK is among those leading the effort to hold China accountable and that anyone who has seen the reports “cannot help but be moved and distressed by what are clearly evil acts”. Adams added that the UK will continue to pressure China with the US administration under Biden and other European countries.

Meanwhile, the Australian foreign minister Marise Payne called for an immediate UN investigation in Xinjiang.

U.S. Bans Cotton, Tomato Imports From China’s Xinjiang Region

Imports of cotton and tomato products from Xinjiang were announced to be banned on Jan 13 to target allegations of forced-labor practices in the northwest Chinese region.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said agents have been instructed to detain shipments containing these products, including those routed through or assembled in third countries in products such as apparel or tomato sauce.

Companies face increasing scrutiny over their supply chains in China. The new ban could have a significant impact especially in the apparel sector, which has already faced a number of customs restrictions amid concern about forced labor linked to the camps.

Western alarm as Canada says Hong Kong enforcing single nationality

Canada, Britain and the United States have expressed alarm after Ottawa revealed authorities in Hong Kong forced a dual citizen to choose one nationality

Under Chinese law, dual nationality is not legally recognised in Hong Kong and authorities may refuse to grant consular access to those who retain Hong Kong or Chinese passports.
But diplomats say the regulations were never enforced and that, until now, officials faced few problems accessing dual nationals in custody.

A State Department spokesman said Washington had "deep concerns that this new Hong Kong policy will compel people to declare their citizenship under duress and without an opportunity to understand the full implications of the declaration".
