Hong Kong Directors of protest-themed movie win 2021 NETPAC award
The Taiwan Golden Horse Film Festival and Asian Film Promotion Alliance presented this year’s #NETPAC Award to two young directors from Hong Kong, Yum-hap (任俠) and Lam-sum (林森) on November 24.
Yum and Lam are directors of “May You Stay Forever Young”, a protest-themed movie that took the 2019 Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong as its backdrop. The movie portrays a group of young people in Hong Kong who gathered voluntarily in a bid to rescue those who attempted to sacrifice themselves for democracy and suicide.
The movie has earlier been shortlisted for the 58th Taiwan #GoldenHorseAwards and is running for the best new director and best editing on Saturday night (November 27).
The production team of “May You Stay Forever Young” was elated to be awarded. Amidst fading freedom in Hong Kong, the team sighed that the movie was first “impossible” to produce and now “impossible” to release.
“Many people have contributed to this movie, but they have to stay nameless and remain in the dark in order to carry on their fight for freedom,” the team added. “The place where this movie is allowed to screen is where freedom stands.”
The production team expressed gratitude to the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (#NETPAC) and they also thanked Taiwan for freedom.

HK Government Arrest at least 10 Civilians for 'Inciting' #BlankVotes in “Patriots-only” #LegCoElection
As of December 16, 2021, the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption (#ICAC) has arrested a total of 10 civilians suspected of "inciting" others not to vote, or to cast invalid votes.
The latest two civilians were arrested and accused of sharing a social media post by democrat and former lawmaker #TedHui, who is in self-imposed exile in Australia. In the post, Hui called for Hongkongers to cast blank votes in the upcoming “patriots only” legislative election as a form of “silent protest.”
Responding to the arrest, Hui wrote on his Facebook page that “I’m confident and I believe, HongKongers, who know the true meaning of ‘#BeWater’, would know what to do on election day.”
This time, Hui added a prominent disclaimer to this facebook post, which wrote “the tyranny has been making rampant arrests. Avoid public dissemination, but please share the post privately.”

Hong Kong Immigrants in Britain are showing a flair for protest
//Between January and September last year [2021] 88,000 Hong Kongers applied to move to Britain under the British National (Overseas) visa route, which was created by the government in response to the crackdown on democracy in Hong Kong. Many of them have been quick to stage in their adopted home the traditions of their old one.
The protest in Edinburgh was one of at least ten held across Britain in January alone. Some demonstrations in London have attracted almost 1,000 people. For a modest-sized group of new immigrants, the speed and scale with which the Hong Kongers have taken to the streets is striking.
Hong Kongers say that the main reason they keep protesting is because objectionable things keep happening. January’s protests have been focused on the issue of press freedom: in December and January two of Hong Kong’s last remaining independent news outlets closed after their offices were raided by police and journalists were arrested. Further protests will probably be held in February to call for a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which start on February 4th...
Hong Kongers who have fled the Chinese Communist Party’s crackdown on the city were specifically driven to leave by sudden restrictions on their rights of free speech and free assembly. The point of moving was to regain those freedoms for themselves and their children. Although many Hong Kongers in Britain still fear the Communist Party, failing to protest in Britain would be cowardly, argues Ken: “If I am silent here I am just helping them.”//

Tech companies should oppose the Hong Kong government’s application for an injunction to ban broadcasting and distribution of the 2019 protest song, “Glory to Hong Kong,” Human Rights Watch said today.
In a June 20, 2023 letter, more than 24 human rights and digital rights groups urged companies including Apple, Google, Meta, Twitter, and Spotify to oppose a potential injunction by the High Court of Hong Kong to protect the right to freedom of expression and access to information in Hong Kong and around the world. The injunction, if ordered by the court, would require that companies remove the song from their respective platforms, effectively banning it online.
