#NeverForget #2Years
Lest We Forget: The Tearful Day Outside the #LegCo Building

June 12, 2021 marks the two year-mark of the first large-scale police-civilian clash in the #AntiELAB movement in Hong Kong.

Two years ago, pro-democracy Hongkongers surrounded the Legislative Council building, with a hope to prevent the second reading of the amendment bill that proposed extradition to China.

Despite the peaceful rally, the police deployed #TearGas grenades and shot #RubberBullets at unarmed civilians, causing countless injuries in the crowd.

Whereas the police was condemned on an international level for their abuse of power and use of violence, the authorities in Hong Kong insisted in categorizing the pro-democracy rally in the Admiralty area as a "riot".

The government's reaction infuriated many citizens, causing over 2 million people to take part in Hong Kong's largest protest in history on June 16, 2019.

What happened in Hong Kong on June 12, 2021?

June 12, 2021 marks two years since the Hong Kong police deployed excessive force and violent means to disperse unarmed pro-democracy civilians in protest of extradition to China.

On June 12, 2021, the Hong Kong police conducted massive stop-and-search on civilians, targetting those wearing black and journalists especially.

The police also cordoned off some busy streets in shopping districts like Causeway Bay and Mongkok.

The police also ticketed passersby randomly for violating the gathering ban.

In the evening, a large number of police officers entered Langham Place, a shopping mall in Mongkok, entrapping shoppers. The police claimed that the pro-protest slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" was heard.

June 30, 2021, Hong Kong: 24 Years after the #Handover and 1 Year after the enforcement of the National Security Law

On June 30, 2021, the flags of the Hong Kong SAR and of the PRC were hanged across the territory, as the authorities celebrate the handover of Hong Kong's sovereignty from Britain to the PRC in 1997.

The day also marks one year since the #NationalSecurityLaw has been forcefully imposed by Beijing.

While the annual July 1st march of the pro-democracy camp has been objected by the police, the force claimed that they will still deploy 10,000 officers. The scale is similar to that on June 4, 2021.

The Government is aldp awarding awards to 750 individuals who made "contribution" to
society. The list included at lesst 20 politicians from the pro-Beijing party DAB and members of the Department of Jusfice such as the Chief Justice and Judge.

Meanwhile, on the same day, Next Media, the parent company of Apple Daily, is forced to stop operating. The company's is still being frozen.
