Pleading for the First #NationalSecurityLaw Conviction -- Hongkonger Raises Sign in Silence: "If there is no jury, does #CommonLaw still exist?"

The first National Security Law case against 24-year-old Tong Ying-Kit resulted in a conviction on "inciting secession" and "terrorism".

On Jul 29, 2021 is the day for mitigation, and the sentencing is scheduled on Jul 30.

Michael, in his 70s this year, raised a sign he handwrote: "If there is no jury, does Common Law still exist?" at Taikoo Plaza and stood in silence.

In response to the conviction of Tong, he bluntly replied, "It's already expected" and criticized that "under Common Law, large cases that go to the High court must have juries present- why isn't there one all of a sudden?"

"The three judges collude with each other, and it is no different from Mainland China." He lamented, "Now there is no law. Rule of law is dead."

Michael predicted that Tong, "even without life imprisonment, will face more than 20 years [of jail]."

He also described that currently, "NSL rules us all," so action does not change much and he fears arrest. However, he still came out and expressed his sentiments. "I'm a hardliner- if you don't shout they'd think you're dead."

#NationalSecurityLaw Case in Hong Kong: Prosecution Cites Chinese Law Books to Assist Judge's Sentencing

The sentencing of Hong Kong's first National Security Law case is scheduled on July 30, 2021.

On July 29, the prosecution revealed that they had prepared Chinese law books for judges in Hong Kong court to review, believing that those sources were related to the case, and could provide strong support to the judges.

According to sources, the law books cited were written in simplified Chinese, named "Comprehension and Application of Criminal Law Provisions and Judicial Practice" (刑法条文理解适用与司法实务全书). However, the judges pointed out that those sources were for reference only. The interpretation of NSL would be based on Hong Kong's law principle. In regards to simulataenous sentencing, there is a large dispute among judges.

Tong Ying Kit pleads: I'm not a bad person, just did something very, very stupid

As "Inciting secession" and "Terrorism" are both serious crime, Tong, only 24 years old, is facing the highest sentence of life imprisonment.

On July 29, the Defence, in their plea, cited Tong's upbringing, the death of his parents, and his grandmother's cancer. If he faced a serious sentence, he would not see his grandmother for the last time.

The Defence expressed that Tong "is not a bad person, but did a very, very stupid thing and feels true remorse", and that "he knows he deserves punishment, but hopes the court can be light in sentencing."

The prosecution side, however, emphasized that according to the NSL, only when a suspect surrenders or exposes others can sentences be reduced.

Police probes booing of China's #NationalAnthem as Locals Cheer for #HongKongAthletes

[Editor's note: Hong Kong is represented by its own sport team in international competitions. Hong Kong has its own emblem, but China's anthem is used.]

Hong Kong fencer Cheung Ka-Long won his first Olympic gold medal on July 26, 2021. It is the second Olympic Gold in Hong Kong history.

His fellow citizens gathered at Kwun Tong's APM mall for live broadcast. It was reportedly that booing was heard as China's anthem was played during the medal ceremony.

Hong Kong police later announced launching an investigation into the incident. A spokesperson supplemented that East Kowloon Police Regional Public Events Investigation Unit will oversee this case and collect relevant evidence.

Young men arrested for “sending angry emoji” targeting pro-China media outlet in Hong Kong

On July 29, Hong Kong police arrested two men over a suspected media boycott campaign. The 18-year-old and 26-year-old were allegedly connected to a Facebook group that contained intimidating messages against a media firm and the Police Force.

The two men were accused of inciting others to attack staff from the firm, police officers and their relatives, as well as on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal intimidation and inciting others to take part in unlawful assembly.

Reporters questioned whether “boycott” and “sending angry emoji” are criminal offences.

Superintendent Wilson Tam, from the force's Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau claimed officers had gone through all the posts, targeting over 100 entities. The particular Facebook group had pressurised them to withdraw advertisements on that media organization, which could cause financial losses to the media company, or damage its reputation.

The Facebook page, “Boycott TVB”, responded to the case in the afternoon, stating that they are not connected to the those being arrested. The page reiterated that they have always been advocating via “peaceful, rational and non-violent” means for advertises to stop partnering with controversial media and oppose any means to damage media organizations, advertisers' personal or property.

Cabinet split grows over China’s role in UK’s electric car industry

A growing cabinet split has developed over China’s role in the UK electric car supply chain as the government wrestles over how to handle economic ties to the superpower, The Independent can reveal.

Senior Conservatives fear the UK is “falling into a trap” by handing over sensitive aspects of its “green industrial revolution” to a regime that threatens British security.

MPs who have sought to raise these concerns have found they are increasingly isolated, with the prime minister suggesting such fears are overblown, according to those familiar with the discussions.

They pleaded guilty.

Apart from Chu, the other three members have been detained for more than 10 months.

They were prosecuted for holding street booths on seven occasions between October 2020 and June 2021. The prosecution alleged that the group called on fellow citizens to "keep on fighting" and chanted the slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our times".
