Hong Kong Government Recruits Boy Scouts for Quarantine Tasks
In face of an epidemic, many hospitals and essential tasks were understaffed. According to RTHK, the Home Affairs Bureau pressed the boy scouts’ volunteers to quarantine tasks in Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre and Tso Kung Tam Outdoor Recreation Centre. The Home Affairs Bureau, upon request of the Stand News, confirmed that the action, saying the involvement is voluntary, “fighting against novel coronavirus under the same goal.”
A boy scouts leader told RTHK that although the involvement is voluntary, he questioned whether they would be assigned sufficient medical supplies, especially when even the Hospital Authority were left with one-month’s supply of surgical masks. He further raised concerns about the fact that although they have basic first aid experience, they were not trained for more difficult tasks.

The Center for Health Protection (CHP) explained that family members of the confirmed patients of Coronavirus infection have not been sent to the quarantine camp, as quarantine camps are full. Instead, they were asked to self-quarantine themselves at home. After being questioned, the Home Affairs Department stated that there is no need to notify district councilors of CHP’s arrangement.
Cheung Man Lung, District Councilor of Cheung On, urged the CHP to immediately transfer the patient's family to quarantine camps.

Gov’t opened quarantine centres despite protests from nearby residents
The government announced that until morning February 9, 86 of the 97 apartments of the 3 quarantine centres were occupied. To cope with the saturation, 100 apartments will be constructed to the 3 quarantine centres and Sai Kung Outdoors Recreation Center, which the government predicted to finish by mid-March.
The Heritage Lodge of the Jao Tsung-I Academy and Chuen Yang Estate, despite protests from residents, will be converted to provide a few hundred more apartments. Meanwhile, the government promised residents that medical staff and law enforcement officers will stand by 24-7 to make sure patients inside remains under medical surveillance.

Winnie Yu Wai-ming, the chairlady of the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (#HAEA) has rehearsed in her mind for many times of being arrested.
Early in the morning at 6am on January 6, 2021, Yu heard loud thumps on her door followed by blaring commands, “Hong Kong Police. Open the door. Hong Kong Police. Open the door.”
Yu’s husband opened the door as instructed. Police rushed in to arrest Yu for her involvement in Legislative Council Primary Election in 2020.
Being arrested for the first time in her life, Yu faced severe charges of the "subversion of state power" under the #NationalSecurityLaw (#NSL).
Not only was she not afraid, but she also remained so calm that she has surprised evern herself.
Alone in the prison cell that night, she did not pity herself but other fellow protesters who were also being arrested. She thought to herself, “they must have faced much worse treatment than I do.”
Yu was known for sheding tears easily, but Yu didn’t cry at all after the arrest, “crying is giving in to the authorities.”
Even after she was released on bail, Yu didn’t think of stepping down from the frontline. Instead she seized the time to do as much as she could.
Yu often tells people that she has “no regrets”. In just over a year, Yu experienced a lot from partaking in anti-ELAB movement and involving in the primary election to being arrested. Yu said there were no regrets. With a smile on her face, Yu said, “I think I am stiff-necked.”
Nevertheless, Yu has once considered leaving Hong Kong. Now with her travel documents confiscated, Yu said resolutely, “I chose to stay put and I won’t regret. If any Hongkonger wishes to stay and continue the fight, I am willing to fight with them til the end.”

21 nations condemn Hong Kong press freedom crackdown and closure of news outlets
The #MediaFreedomCoalition, 21 countries including the U.S., U.K., Australia, Germany, Canada and Japan said in a statement released by the U.S. State Department on February 8 that they “express their deep concern at the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese authorities’ attacks on freedom of the press and their suppression of independent local media in Hong Kong.”
The statement said authorities have pursued independent media outlets such as the recently closed #StandNews and #CitizenNews since China’s imposition of a national security law, adding these “actions further undermine confidence in Hong Kong’s international reputation.”
