Wikipedia in All Languages Is Now Banned in China

Wikipedia is now completely unaccessible in China.

The Wikimedia Foundation has confirmed that all language editions of Wikipedia have been blocked in mainland China since April 2020.

The move is unexpected to the Wikimedia Foundation, yet China has been actively blocking certain internet sites. For example, Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Turkey blocked access to Wikipedia since 2017.

The question we need to think about:

After implementing the new national security law, will HongKongers share the same fate as Mainland China, have our freedom on the internet blocked by the "Great Firewall"?
Are we still free to access foreign social media like Facebook and Twitter?

China blocks Wikimedia Foundation’s accreditation to World Intellectual Property Organization

China blocked the Wikimedia Foundation’s application for observer status at the World Intellectual Property Organization (#WIPO) on September 23, 2020.

As a United Nations (#UN) organization, WIPO develops international treaties on copyright, IP, trademarks, patents and related issues.

China was an "official observer" of the WIPO and was the only country to raise objections to the accreditation of Wikimedia.

In their last-minute objections, China claimed Wikimedia’s application was 'incomplete' and suggested that the Foundation was carrying out 'political activities' via the volunteer-led Wikimedia Taiwan chapter.

Despite that the Wikimedia's application was supported by the UK and the US, due to China's block, the Foundation's application for observer status has been suspended and will only be reconsidered in 2021.

#Wikipedia wars: How Hongkongers and mainland Chinese are battling to set the #narrative

//Wikipedia now hosts over one million articles in its Chinese edition alone. Entries can be written and edited by any internet user as long as these are supported by reliable news sources, although no original research is allowed.

Wikipedia volunteers in Hong Kong say they face increasing problems finding a diverse range of reliable media sources to cite....

Their mainland counterparts are pushing for the use of Chinese state media as reliable news sources to channel their version of events.

Hong Kong users also fear that it will become harder for them to get elected as administrators on Wikipedia – a role which gives them power to adjudicate on editing decisions and invoke the website’s guiding rules and principles – because the Chinese version of the website is dominated by mainland users.

A Chinese Wikipedia article about the Yuen Long MTR mob attack in July 2019 had recorded a whopping 1,912 edits as of July 8, with 473 media sources cited in footnotes.

As Apple Daily closed last month, some users attempted to purge Wikipedia of news outlets deemed pro-democracy. One user named “Walter Grassroot” started removing Apple Daily news links in articles en masse, hours before the newspaper’s official shutdown on June 23.

In his user history, Walter Grassroot left a comment supportive of another user MINQI, who appeared sympathetic to pro-China viewpoints, saying: “People supporting Taiwan, Hong Kong, Manchu and Falun Gong independence exist because of financial support in the background” and they must set up a foundation for efficient “large scale clean-ups” of articles in the future...

Screenshots that surfaced on Wednesday showed users on the Chinese QQ messaging app for mainland Wikipedia editors discussing reporting their Hong Kong peers to the city’s national security police hotline.

“We should report those from the Hong Kong user group,” a QQ user under the handle “Walter Grassroot” wrote after another user posted an image of the hotline’s details. “Nice idea,” another replied...//

Exclusive: Wikipedia bans 7 mainland Chinese power users over ‘infiltration and exploitation’ in unprecedented clampdown

The move by the Wikimedia Foundation came after "long and deep investigations" into a group of mainland Chinese users, two months after HKFP revealed that some of them allegedly threatened to report their Hong Kong peers to the city's national security police.

The foundation that oversees Wikipedia has taken unprecedented action to ban seven mainland Chinese users from its websites globally and revoke administrator access and other privileges for 12 other users, following an HKFP report of alleged threats to Hong Kong users.

#China again blocks #WikimediaFoundation’s accreditation to World Intellectual Property Organization

//China today blocked the Wikimedia Foundation’s bid for observer status at the World Intellectual Property Organization (#WIPO) for the second timeafter the Foundation’s initial application in 2020.

WIPO is the #UnitedNations (#UN) organization that develops international treaties on copyright, patents, trademarks and related issues. China was again the only country to object to the accreditation of the Wikimedia Foundation as an official observer.

The Foundation will reapply for official observer status in 2022, but it will only be admitted by WIPO if China decides to lift its blockade.

WIPO’s work, which shapes international rules that affect the sharing of free knowledge, impacts Wikipedia’s ability to provide hundreds of millions of people with information in their own languages

As in 2020, China’s statement falsely suggested that the Wikimedia Foundation was spreading disinformation via the independent, volunteer-led #WikimediaTaiwan chapter. The United States and the group of industrialized countries at WIPO — which also includes many European Union member states, Australia, Canada, the Holy See, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom — expressed their support for the Foundation’s application. Since WIPO is generally run by consensus, any one country may veto accreditation requests by non-governmental organizations.//
