Concern group: HK Gov't Attempts to Displace Hongkongers' Mother Tongue by Trimming Down Cantonese Component in Public Exams
The Curriculum Review Taskforce of Hong Kong's Education Bureau issued a consultation paper in June 2019, which recommended trimming down the Chinese Language papers, particularly the listening and speaking sections which involved the use of Cantonese, in public exams.
Although more than 90,000 citizens sent in their opinion opposing the change, the Taskforce insisted their proposal in the latest report announced on September 22, 2020.
What’s even more concerning is that the Taskforce only invited 4 pro-Beijing media outlets to its press briefing, including Ta Kung Pao, Wen Wei Pao, Sing Tao and Ming Pao.
Educators worried that the proposal, if enforced, would have impact on Cantonese learning, the mother tongue of Hongkoners. They opined that the oral component of the public exam DSE in Hong Kong for university admission, is one of the keys to prevent the conversion of the medium of instruction in Hong Kong schools to Putonghua. Therefore, the government's act triggers the fear of the displacement of Cantonese.

June 4th Vigil Organizer Disbanded after 32 Years
After a special meeting on September 25, 2021, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China passed a motion to dissolve. The voting took place at the now-shut-down June 4th Museum. 41 votes agreed to its disbandment while 4 votes said no.
The 32-year-old pro-democracy organization is known for holding the annual June 4th Tiananmen Massacre candlelight vigil in Hong Kong's Victoria Park. Its co-directors and core members have been arrested and detained by the police on charges of "state subversion".
When in custody, Barrister #ChowHangTung, the vice-president of the group, had urged the members of the Alliance to not disband the group, in order to stand up against the terror disseminated by the regime.
Since the forced enactment of the National Security Law in Hong Kong in 2020, at least 49 civic organizations in Hong Kong has disbanded.

Hong Kong Court Sends Three More Pro-democracy Protesters to Over 5 years in Jail for "Rioting", Causing Public Grievances
On September 25, 2021, the district court convicted three pro-democracy protesters of "rioting" during the police siege of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU) in November 2019. The three young people were arrested during clashes in nearby Jordan as citizens attempted to break the police siege. They are sentenced to jail terms ranging from 5 years to 5 years and 8 months.
The defendants were calm when hearing the sentence. When the court adjourned, pro-democracy supporters waved to them and said, "hang on!". Some shout to the court, "there are no rioters, only tyranny!" and "Shame!"
Meanwhile, the mother of the principle defendant wept, shouting "unfair", "killing the innocent" and "my son is not guilty!" She continued to cry and almost collapsed in the corridor.
The families of other defendants tried to console her, pointing out that her son would be saddened seeing his mother in such a state: "We have to go through this together. We understand. It is not like we do not feel anything".
Many people in the courtroom broke into tears, mourning their fellow pro-democracy Hongkongers.

Hong Kong Professor's Shanghai Lecture Live Stream Cut Off after Allegedly Being Reported to Party Authorities
Professor Xu Zidong of Hong Kong's Lingnan University spoke at a symposium on Chinese literature in Shanghai, when the lecture's live stream was shut down after an attendee allegedly reported his speech to the China's Central Commission for Disciplinary Inspection (CCDI). The actual reason for the shutdown was not known.
Xu is the former Head of Lingnan University's Chinese Department, and attended the symposium in Shanghai's Fudan University as a guest speaker. His talk discussed the three systems of authority portrayed in the 1993 Chinese novel White Deer Plain - "political authority", "clan authority", and "divine authority".
A video clip of the live stream was shared on Weibo, showing the moment it was being shut down. It showed Fudan University Professor Li Nan, the symposium's host, slowly turning the live stream camera away from Xu, who continued his lecture. Li then spoke into the camera: "The disciplinary Inspector came a moment ago, and said we're not allowed to live-stream this lecture. A female student was taking photos earlier, and sent it to the CCDI. The CCDI secretary came to shut us down… Yes, we'll record this with our phones. We'll record it."
The video was shared over 4000 times, until it was ultimately deleted.
