The Protesters Suspected of Being Beaten to Death by Police; Several Cities in Belarus Demonstrated in Mourning on Saturday

Thousands of people demonstrated in several cities in Belarus on Sunday (15th), not only continuing asking Lukashenko for resignation but also protesting that the police force beat one of the protesters and died during the detention. Protesters lighted up the candle and brought white flowers for mourn, requesting the government to investigate the reason for his death. In capital Minsk, police used tear gas grenade and water cannon vehicles to disperse protesters. According to the local human rights organisation announced, there were at least 928 people have been arrested.

According to foreign media quoted from an eyewitness, suspected plainclothes police officers tried to pull off the red and white ribbon, representing the anti-government camp, outside the Minsk courthouse last Wednesday (11th November). A 31-year-old protester Roman Bondarenko had conflicts with them, but then he had been brought to the police car and got arrested. His family found him in the hospital, and he was still in a coma until last Thursday (12th November), he died because of brain damage. Someone suspected that he was beaten while in detention. However, the local government denied any involvement in his death and said that the fight among the people was the cause for his death.

The EU spokesperson later stated that the incident was the shameful result of violent suppression of the people from the local government, threatened to impose heavier sanctions on the Belarusian government.

Australian Prime Minister Visits Japan, Signing Security Pact to Counter China's Influence

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison arrived in Japan on Tuesday for a visit. Reuters reports that Morrison is expected to sign a historic military cooperation agreement with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to cooperate in countering the growing influence of China in the region.

Morrison arrived in Japan on Tuesday, and an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan said that the meeting would include an announcement, but did not reveal any details. Some security experts estimate that Morrison and Suga will sign the Reciprocal Access Agreement, establishing a legal framework to allow mutual military training visits and joint exercises.

Japan has been negotiating the agreement for over six years, and still needs to be ratified by the Japanese Parliament. It will be the first military cooperation related agreement since the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security in the 1960s, allowing the U.S. to base warship, fighter jets and set up military bases in and around Japan.

O’Toole Slams “Weak” Trudeau Again, Calls for Banning Huawei from 5G Projects in Canada in 30 Days

Erin O’Toole, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, called on the Liberal government on Sunday, 15 November to take a stronger stand on the use of Huawei’s technology and other China-related issues.

O’Toole revealed in an interview that the Conservative Party is ready to table a motion requiring the federal government to ban Huawei from participating in the construction of Canada’s 5G network within 30 days. He added that they will also call on the government to set out new strategies targeting such issues as China’s growing influence and its intimidation of Canadians.

Commenting that Trudeau had been too close to China in the past, O’Toole said the Liberal Party needs to be honest with Canadians and their allies. He continued that hundreds of Canadians are feeling the influence of the CCP at home and that the citizens need a responsible and principled leader.

When asked if Canada is ready for retaliation should it become harder on China, O’toole emphasized that Canada needs to cooperate with the rest of the Five Eyes to counter China in such areas as the economy.

“In the last 20 years, all parties, all democratic countries tried to engage, hoping that China, in the WTO and other things, would start moving towards respect for rule of law, for human rights. It’s gone the opposite,” said O’Toole. “So when things are not working after a generation, it’s time for some leadership to take a different approach.”

HK #AmCham president resigns over city's quarantine rules

//The president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AmCham) Tara Joseph said on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 she is resigning as she cannot appeal to the city’s government to ease COVID-19 restrictions at the same time as having to undergo quarantine herself.“

Hong Kong has entered a new phase so quickly and it should appeal to people who don’t mind its new normal and see opportunities. American companies have a lot to navigate in the coming few years but there is always potential in Hong Kong.”

Despite barely recording any local coronavirus cases in recent months, authorities in the global financial hub have tightened up quarantine rules in a bid to convince Beijing to allow cross-border travel.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has repeatedly said opening the border with mainland China, Hong Kong’s main source of growth, was her priority.//

#Facebook Deletes Pro-democracy Content Posted by #Bookshop Without Explanation

On November 16, 2021, the Moom Bookshop revealed that their page has been completely removed by Facebook for no apparent reasons. The bookshop, a popular online store based in Taiwan, specializes in photography and photobooks.

The bookshop has 130,000 supporters and they could no longer browse the Facebook page of bookshop. The store also failed to log on to their account.

The owner of the bookshop, Chang Hok-tun, wrote on his Facebook that its hard to understand the rationale for Facebook to remove the bookshop from its platform.

In his statement, Chang recalled the items being warned and deleted by Facebook in the past. These included the photo albums of Hong Kong's Anti-ELAB movement in 2019. The stated reason for removal was images involving blood and violence.

HK Police Forced Restaurant to Stop Business and Take Down "Sensitive" Wishing Notes

Hong Kong police had forced a noodle shop to suspend business until it removes customers' wishing notes with "sensitive wordings".

The restaurant, Betsutenjin Hakata Ramen in Tsim Sha Tsui, had a wall where customers could write their wishes on stickers resembling prayer plaques at Japanese shrines. Many wishes were related to the 2019 #AntiELAB protests, and the pro-democracy shop owner had left them up in the two years since as a record of the times.

However, police received a tip from a woman who alleged that the shop was displaying slogans that violate the #NationalSecurityLaw, Officers arrived and verbally warned the owner, who agreed to remove the offending messages on their own. Police listed the incident under "miscellaneous" and made no arrests, nor sent the National Security Department for follow-up.

Restaurant staff told Ming Pao that police had visited during the busy dinner hours, and demanded customers to leave the shop immediately. The staff had since removed over a hundred notes and resumed business the next day. The notes had only been used for decoration, they said, and no new notes had been added since the National Security Law came into effect in 2020.

The shop apologized to its customers with a Facebook post for having to take down its wishing wall after persisting for 3 years. The staff had read every single wish left by the customers, the post said; "We will not forget a single word from everyone."

From previous photos on the shop's Facebook page, some customers' wishing notes included "disband the police", "China implode", and "6.12" [ed: commemorating the date when protesters stopped the passing of the ELAB bill]. After the police visit, only a few stickers remain that read, "Hong Kong, add oil."
